View Full Version : Dog Day Afternoon, Bullit, Happy Feet, Departed - all coming...
Amiable-Akuma 01-06-07, 03:46 PM According to HD DVD Format Blog - and they've always been basically 100% right about this kind of stuff, early scoops in the past - I might add.

I haven't seen any of these movies - are they good and who of you guys would buy them?
I hope Happy Feet is coming soon. I can't get my three year old daughter to realize we don't have it to watch at home, after she saw it at the theater.

The Departed, Dog Day Afternoon and Bullitt are incredible movies that no one should go without seeing. In my opinion, these three movies are perfection. I will be buying much fewer HD DVDs this year than I did last year, but these three are must-haves for me.
I can't wait to hear what else Warner has planned. Universal's announcements should be exciting as well.
CalgaryCowboy 01-06-07, 04:52 PM Departed has been listed on Futureshop.ca as a Feb release.
shiznit 01-06-07, 04:56 PM happy feet, yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going through the same thing. I downloaded the Prince/Happy Feet video and we play it over and over and over again. Sure it's in HD, but it's not HD-DVD. This was the first movie my son saw in the theater.
slider33 01-06-07, 11:32 PM I'm not sure about Happy Feet but I am PUMPED about the other three!!! I agree with MSmith, fantastic movies and some of my favorites.

I second that request from my 5 year old. heck, I'm just happy if the DVD is released sometime in the next 2 months. For what's it's worth (Go ahead flame me), I hope it is a combo disc.
Forceflow 01-06-07, 11:57 PM Bullitt, nice! Steve McQueen! The SD DVD was not so good, I hope they minted a new master...

They just remastered it 2 years ago for a 2 disc SE. I'm sure it will be that one they use.
I'm happy to see Bulitt mentioned. I kind of figured this might be coming sooner rather than later because of the relatively newer master.
Its also why I expect we will see at least one James Dean flick show up before too long too.
I thought the new dvd of Bulitt looked good, but in comparing it to the old one, it looks like they mostly just bumped the contrast up and boosted the color saturation.
I thought the original disc looked perfectly natural as film. The new one looked more like it was trying to pass off as a new film.
I'm sure everyone will be quite happy when they see it though. Especially residents of the Tier threads.
Forceflow 01-07-07, 12:16 AM I thought the Bullitt SD disc (the first one, not the newer 2 disc edition) was pretty bad. I was comparing it (mentally) to The Great Escape and that movie looked WAY better. I'm sure the HD DVD will look amazing though. I know some of my friends will buy it on release. I'll stick to renting it for now...
invadergir 01-07-07, 12:51 AM Departed was a given from the get go, but here's hoping for an early release for Happy feet for the Easter Season. If its anything what i have seen/heard at the theater i will be one hell of a happy man. Love the sound for the movie and the LFE is just awesome (work at the theate rin the booth and can feel it 2 theaters down) It just better come with a TrueHD track
Majwell 01-07-07, 03:57 AM I will def buy Bullitt on release, great movie and car chase scene. For once I am happy the price a of a dvd increased, I was going to buy the SE because the first one looked poor, but the price jumped on amazon right before I bought it, so I decided not to get it.
Lucky me now I can just get the HD DVD, even better.
Great titles! Finally some good ones coming...

The whole Steve McQueen set was priced at $15.88 at Sams Club last time I was in.
That included Bulitt, The Getaway, Papilon, Tom Horn, and Never So Few.
Hopefully all the extras from the 2 disc set will get ported over as there is supposed to be an excellant doc on film editing with that one.
Ian_Currie 01-07-07, 09:08 AM Have you watched Bulitt recently - specifically the car chase scene? It doesn't hold up at all (imho), some footage is recycled more than once throughout the chase - thought it was kind of dull . I can appreciate it's value from the perspective of film history though.
Excited about The Departed.
Is there a time frame for these releases? I didn't see any mentioned in the srticle.

Excited about The Departed.
I saw Bullitt and Dog Day in theaters when they were released; both great films.
I'm a long time Steve McQueen fan.
And any film with Jaqueline Bisset in it is a winner in my book. :D
As to the car chase in Bullitt, it was, at the time (1968), considered THE best chase ever filmed. Some think it still is. It certainly set the standard for car chases to come.
BTW, some trivia:
McQueen did about 75% of the driving in the chase. One of the Mustangs used (there were two) was McQueen's own car.
Dennis M 01-07-07, 09:50 AM OHHH YAAAA! BULLIT
This title is definitely going to be added to my library. Love car chase films and this is one of the best. Plus it's Steve McQueen, instant sale. :D
Great to hear! Good mix of old and new *quality* movies.
Fantastic news, I will take all four! At CES I hope they announce all the Matrix movies and 2001.

I still think that Bullitt is the car chase to top... Few movies have even come close.
There is no recycled footage during the chase.

you're damned right this BETTER be a combo disc.....my daughter is watching ant bully right now on the regular dvd side..
Marc Alexander 01-07-07, 03:09 PM Does Warner even do combo (DVD) discs? I don't think they do.
What we may see on these titles are dual format discs, but not DVD. They would be HD-DVD/BD.
I personally would prefer to have a seperate DVD for Happy Feet. After reaching a certain age, kids will insist on handling their own DVDs.
"I DO IT!!!"
Edit: Warner does do HD-DVD/DVD combos (Superman Returns for example)
