View Full Version : Does the Wii actually support 802.11g?
mkozlows 01-06-07, 11:47 PM The box says it supports "802.11b/g", which you'd think would mean full-speed G support. A friend of mine (using a Belkin router) confirms that the Wii connects up when he's got his router set to G-only mode.
But with my Linksys WRT54G, probably the most vanilla-standard router in existence, I couldn't for the life of me get it to connect in G-only mode. Finally, I read on Nintendo's support site (http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/errors/51330-51332.jsp) the following:
Ensure that the router is set to broadcast in "mixed" or "b/g" mode. Routers set to "g only" may not be able to allow a successful connection from the Wii console.
And sure enough, if I put it into mixed-mode, it works for me, with no other change.
I don't understand this at all. It MAY not be able to work in G-only mode? What the heck kind of hardware might or might work in G-only mode, but will always work in B? Are they putting G hardware in some Wiis and B hardware in others? Is it B hardware in all of them, and my friend is mistaken about his configuration (and Nintendo is lying when they say "802.11b/g" on the spec sheet)?
JoshuaL 01-07-07, 12:24 AM The Wii certainly works in G-only mode, as that is what I'm currently using on my Linksys WRT54GX4. Nintendo is probably just covering their bases for router incompatibility. You may want to switch the channel when in G-only mode to 11 if it's not there already. If that doesn't help, make sure the firmware is up to date.

I tried both 11 and 1, and the firmware is freshly updated. I tried it without any encryption, I tried it with WEP, I tried it with WPA, I tried it with a mouse, I tried it in a house... but only mixed mode made it work.
JoshuaL 01-07-07, 12:36 AM Is the Wii up to date system-update-wise? Other than that I can't think of anything else to try, sorry.
nomad139 01-07-07, 01:19 AM I got ours to connect on the 1st try using WEP with the Belkin 'g' router (nothing special, just picked it up at WalMart). Everything has worked very well.
The menus display both WPA & WEP, so it "should" have both abilities. Are you able to connect any other wireless devices with that router setting?
SpeedyHTPC 01-07-07, 01:25 AM It may need to negotiate up from b to g..
mkozlows 01-08-07, 01:38 AM Josh: Obviously, I couldn't update it until I connected; but after I did connect and do the update, I tried again with G-only and no dice.
Nomad: If you haven't done anything with your router, you're probably running in mixed mode, as that's the out-of-box default on almost all routers. WPA and WEP weren't a problem for me (both worked with B, neither worked with G). And yes, other devices (two laptops, a Squeezebox, and a 360) work fine.
I really do wonder, particularly given the weird wording on Nintendo's site, if the wireless hardware varies on a per-unit basis. That seems insane and unlikely, but so does the idea of a G device not working with an ultra-standard Linksys router...
Slordak 01-09-07, 11:24 AM To chime in with my own experiences here... The Wii does work with my router (a Linksys WRT54GX) in "G only" mode. I'm not certain if it's actually a full 802.11g device, but it seems to work just fine.
The issue may be that different routers do something different with how they implement "G only" mode, which may be confusing the Wii, or at least confusing the part of the Wii which is supposed to be determining whether to try to run in "B" or "G" mode.
goatwuss 01-09-07, 02:48 PM Hey - I am in the same boat as the original poster. I have the WRT54G v.5 (i think v5) and it does not work in G only mode. I set it to mixed, and it works fine. WEIRD
I spent the longest time trying to connect to my WRT54G. I tried everything listed in various forums other than update the firmware (I was lazy). Finally, I just removed security, connected the Wii, turned security back on and was able to re-connect the Wii successfully. It is still set to mixed mode.
galve2000 01-10-07, 03:54 PM i remember a thread from a few months ago now where i asked about WPA security. many of you seemed to think that b/c the DS doesn't support WPA, the Wii would probably not support same either as Nintendo would probably not want to hinder connectivity amongst the two systems.
now that some of you lucky people have had a Wii for close to 2 months now, what is the final verdict on WPA encirption.
BTW i can happily say that i got a call from FYE yesterday advising me that my Wii was waiting for me, and i instructed a friend of mine to pick it up for me. now i just have to find time to pick it up from him.
how exciting!
thanks in advance for taking the time to reply!

It does support WPA. I had no problem getting it on my WPA network.
Of course, then I got my DS and had to switch everything over to WEP, but yes, WPA will work for the Wii.
jocktheglide 01-10-07, 08:08 PM mine has never worked since day one...G mode or not and whatever channel does not work im waiting on adapter...

my friend dropped off my pre-ordered Wii yesterday afternoon to my great suprise and after a couple minutes of playing around with my Mii and Zelda, i decided to add it to my WPK-encypted wLAN at home.
worked like a charm!
(thank god..)
i love my Wii... :)

I had the same problems with the Wii and wireless.
After testing 4 different routers I had different results on all of them. Some would work with G only. Others would not with G no matter what channel or encryption I had on or off.
However I did not want to slow my wireless network down by using both B and G so mixed mode was not an option that I wanted to consider.
I've settled on the Netgear WGU624 since I need an A wireless signal also.
I can't do an automatic setup with this router. Sometimes the Wii will work, other times it will not see the router. But I found that setting up a static IP for the Wii and plugging in the rest of the info (DNS, Gateway, etc) manually makes the Wii happy.
While I would rather have the Wii get this info from DHCP it just doesn't happen.
So you may want to see if adding everything manually will solve your problems.
DJ-phYre 01-14-07, 11:44 AM I could not get it to work with my WRT54G, a WAP54G, or the existing wireless infastructure that is in our apartments (I live in campus apts). I finally gave up and ordered the wired adapter which started shipping on 1/12/07....
Styled1 01-16-07, 03:34 AM Best thing to do if you do not have a router is by a Buffalo g-mimo. Picked one up after having trouble with the cheap router I had. The buffalo was easy to install and has improved download speeds on my WII and 360, not to mention works perfectly with my notebook
