I've had my new theater for about three years now. I was wondering if some of you who have had a finished room for a while might chime in with what things you have upgraded since your rooms were completed.

View Full Version : For those who have had a theater for a while.... Art Sonneborn 01-07-07, 01:43 AM I've had my new theater for about three years now. I was wondering if some of you who have had a finished room for a while might chime in with what things you have upgraded since your rooms were completed. Art CptnRandy 01-07-07, 09:43 AM Curtains! I've just finished getting the folds just right. I had planned on them for the start, but never got around to it. They do add a very nice finishing touch. But you already have curtains. I'm probably at the point where I'll start looking for a new projector sometime this year. I'm always a little nervous about hanging out in the projector section of the forum here. Those guys are nuts! :D I'm not one of the guys around here that are constantly upgrading, looking for the next great thing, but before too long, it'll be closing in on 4 years on my projector life. My ideal situation would be to swap out the projector with no other changes. Randy johnnykretentiv 01-07-07, 09:48 AM Things I have added since my room was "completed". A second row of seats / riser Curtains Lutron dimmer system It looks like my company will be moving me in the next year or so. I guess I get to do it all over. The right way this time!! sdspga 01-07-07, 08:16 PM Curtains, accoustic panels, switched to 2.35 AR, lightbox, extra DVD player for playing intros. Of course, if I had built mine like yours in the first place, Art, many of these upgrades would have been unnecessary :) sds jeffczyz 01-09-07, 08:19 PM I've had my HT for about 3 years as well. Art, you're pics are what really got me to get into the details of an HT vs just building a room to watch movies. Since then I've added a few carpet stains and a bunch of DVD's. Other than that I haven't added much. I tend to change out new posters ever month or so to keep it looking fresh. We're talking about moving, so now I'm itching to start all over again. As much as I'll miss my theater, I'm going to love building a new one... Jeff warrenP 01-10-07, 12:58 AM We recently moved, so I'm between theaters right now. However, in the last one, we spent most of the upgrade time on personalized items. Smaller really, but they made an impact, like the personalized Bistream animation intro, getting popcorn tubs with our name on them, some throw blankets with the name as well, etc... I guess items that more fall on the overall "experience" versus actual tech equipment. On the more tech side, right now I'm building a new media server, and getting all the CDs loaded in there. I'm finding that little Xbox 360 quite a bit more useful than I thought it would be. Another tech item that I'm currently playing with is a voice control system for home automation. I'm trying to learn the system well, and have yet to spend lots of time on that. However, I plan on being able to control the theater by voice, to the degree (noting it is a theater environment) that will be possible. Somehow, and I'm no where near it yet, I want to be able to simply say, "Watch Fellowship of the Ring" and everything happens automatically. If my theater was done, I'd be spending my time on automation and voice control systems. scaesare 01-10-07, 12:02 PM I've only had it for 3-4 months, so primarily the liquor collection for the bar. ;-) Actually, gotteting a HTPC installed, and soem remote programming refinements is it thus far. I want to add a poker table soon. msanders847 01-10-07, 03:51 PM Well I'm not sure any DIY theater is ever completed, they're just perpetually between upgrades! That being said we "Finished" ours about 15 months ago and since then have added the following. Better screen. a PC with USBIRT to control lighting using Smart Home software and Insteon dimmers Hard wired IR system DIY Proscenium arch in front of the screen and screen masking system Blackout curtains for windows for day time viewing. Classic Pop corn Machine 5 flavor bag in box soda machine Hush Box for projector Bass shakers under couches 2nd row of seating and riser. Planned upgrades are: New projector (1080p, currently using an X1 with 1500 hrs on it, which I love but it's time to upgrade) HD DVD unit or drive for PC Anamorphic Lens for 2.35 CH setup. WillyGib 01-10-07, 04:10 PM Upgrade Hell, I am building a completely new one, but I did just finish putting up crown molding, acoustical treatments, curtains, and a proscenium. FootballDen 01-10-07, 07:25 PM I ahve had mine for less then a year nad I love it. But I keep looking around and saying, what if i knock that wall down, build a wall there, riser there, you know, I have rebuild fever.
