I have a chance to audtion a Audio Research LS26 at home... I was trying to get the REF3 but looks like I will only be able to get the LS26 at this time. How much difference is the LS26 from the REF3. I know it's 60% of the cost but how close is it compared to the performance of the REF3? Any input would be appreciated.

The LS26 for the money is a terrific preamp with much of the Ref 3 technology

From the ARC website....

"The LS26 sounds like a REF3 on a slightly smaller scale, sharing an uncanny ability to grab you and make you want to listen to whatever is playing. The musicians are there, performing for you, without hype. The soundstage is expansive, everything within it properly proportioned, focused and grainless. There is a natural, expressive dynamic life that is captivating: quiet passages whisper and loud passages are startling. Like the REF3, there is a directness and immediacy that connects the listener with the performance. The LS26 outperforms the vaunted REF2MKII."

Oneobgyn, Thanks, have read the website... I'll bet you've listened to both : ) ... Do you feel they are very close?

I have and they are.

For the money the LS 26 is a terrific preamp.

Bear in mind that a used Ref 3 often shows up on Audiogon for the price of a new LS 26.

The best analogy I can give is to compare the Wilson MAXX ll to the X-2 Alexandria at 3X the price. Don't get me wrong, because I love my X-2's and would never switch BUT the MAXX ll has much of the X-2 technology (similar to LS 26 and Ref 3). Had the MAXX ll been available before the X-2 I would have given serious consideration to purchase it instead. My son has MAXX ll's and they are wonderful. So similarly would the analogy be for the LS 26. BTW, I owned the Ref 2 Mk ll before my Ref 3 and the LS 26 is indeed a better preamp.
