View Full Version : XM vs. Sirius
I'm buying a new infiniti and want to get satellite radio. I can't seem to decide which one to get. I'm about 40 miles southeast of Chicago in a small town. I mostly enjoy listening to House music. Although Techno and Trance is good, I prefer House. I also enjoy listening to The Who (I know Sirius has an entire channel dedicated to them) and pretty much any alternative rock. Sports don't really matter much to me and neither does news really. Also, a few good reggae stations would be nice. After reading a bit more, the sound quality seems to be a huge difference in deciding. Since I like harcore bass, what would work better?
With the following being said, do you suggest I get XM or Sirius? Thanks for your help.

id get the 3 free day trials for both services and see which one you like.you can do this online.
OrleansDawg 01-08-07, 01:42 AM I love XM.
My friends have Sirius and love it as well.
Can't go wrong with either and imo that is very true
Comes down to this, imo...love Baseball? Get XM...love NBA/NFL? Get Sirius
My vote is for Sirius. I have had it over 3.5 years and LOVE it. But to each his own.
No Clue 01-09-07, 04:45 PM I have both. There are channels on each one that I really like. Maybe they will merge at some point. One doesn't clearly stand above the other.
The only negative I see is Sirius seems to have more issues where I live with dropouts (going under bridges, around tall trees, etc) but that could be a local issue and it doesn't happen that often.
incubus2828 01-23-07, 05:07 PM Get SIRIUS... trust me... you won't be dissappointed.
incubus2828 01-23-07, 05:10 PM SIRIUS... Especially if you like "The Who"
RAVEN56706 01-23-07, 08:30 PM i have had sirius for 1 year and i just renewed it for 3 years so as you can tell i love it...
i had xm for 6 months and i left.... it wasnt so good
Pat6366 01-24-07, 07:50 AM I have to agree with Mercury, get the free trials and decide for yourself.
Steve Mehs 01-24-07, 10:55 PM Get both, that way you'll never lose out :)
If you're are going to listen to house and trance. I HIGHLY suggest you listen to the free trials of both services. Both XM and Sirius I feel offer very different music selection when it comes to Electronic/Dance genre's. Alot of people will say XM offers the better of the two when it comes to it. I'm not a die-hard fan of the genre but I will listen to it from time to time so it was a non-factor to me, but I know from reading another Sirius board they do differ alot.
Beer Man 01-30-07, 04:41 PM I have had both. IMO I would go with XM over Sirius any day. Let me explain what I mean. A few years ago I had to cancel my service with both Sirius and XM because of a move we had to make (we had two house payments so satellite radio among other things had to go). I paid for a year subscription with both services. I first called XM and cancelled my service. They were very helpful and even gave me a refund on the unused portion of my service (3 months worth). They didn’t have to do this but it was a nice gesture. I then called Sirius to cancel my service with them and the person that I spoke with was about as rude as you could get. The lady that I spoke with told me that there would be a $75 disconnect fee if I wanted to cancel my service with them. I reminded her that I had already paid for a year in advance and I wasn’t looking for a refund just a service disconnect (I didn’t want someone else listening to radio that I had paid for since the radio was in a truck that I traded in). She informed me that Sirius treats their service just like a cellular phone company and that she couldn’t do anything about the disconnect fee. I then told her that I would not re-up my contract with them at a later date and that I would chose XM (and send as many people to XM that I could) in the future. She told me that was my right and they were not going to change their policy.
I personally wouldn’t recommend Sirius to anyone. JMHO

It's funny how different experiences people can have. To me both XM and Sirius are great, depends on your tastes. More sports are available on Sirius than XM if you're into sports. Past that, listen to the music lineups. I personally prefer Sirius.
To stay on track, I use the month to month plan because I hate contract situations with anything, not just satillite radio. I was laid off the beginning of January and called to cancel my Sirius subscription. When asked why, I told them it was an unneeded expense being laid off. The rep was extremely friendly and responded asking if I expected to be working again in a couple months which of course I told her I better be :) She then preceded to give me a 2 month credit so I wouldn't have to cancel my service while looking for another job.
I wanted to bring this up because people seem to not realize within their bad experiences, there are others having the complete opposite experience. You're typically dealing with outsourced call centers that have no direct ties to the companies you're calling. You will get a bad egg from time to time.

You're typically dealing with outsourced call centers that have no direct ties to the companies you're calling. You will get a bad egg from time to time.I certainly don’t doubt that you’re correct. I base my dislike for Sirius strictly from how I was treated in the past. As far as service goes, to me, there was very little difference between XM and Sirius. They both are very good. As far as a contract goes.... I didn’t sign a contract with either company, which fuels my dislike of Sirius. I just paid for a years’ worth of service rather than pay month to month. I still had 3 months left on my service that someone else got to take advantage of. If you look at their terms (admittedly I didn’t do this which was my mistake) it says that there is a $75 disconnect fee. This is ridiculous in my opinion since XM does not charge such a charge. I would have taken out Sirius service again if I had not had this bad experience in the past with them.
So it really boils down to this. They are both comparable services. If you don’t mind paying a $75 disconnect fee then go with Sirius. If you do then go with XM. I have XM again and I couldn't be happier.

Steve Mehs 01-31-07, 12:32 AM It’s stated clear as day on Sirius’ website that if you prepay and cancel before your time is up, you will get changed a cancelation fee of $75. They didn’t treat you any worse than anyone else. With XM, if you prepay and cancel before your time is up, you get prorated for the time you didn’t use. They didn’t treat you better than anyone else. XM and Sirius are two different companies and have two different policies regarding prepaying for service, nothing wrong with that. When you signed up for service, you agreed to that.
I used to be a hardcore Sirius basher, but decided to put my money were my mouth was, I signed up on a semi annual plan, I knew well of the $75 cancellation fee and I expected to hate Sirius, and cancel after few months. Almost two and a half years later I now have 2 Sirius subscriptions, in addition to my 2 XM subscriptions. And if you pay monthly there is no cancelation fee.
RAVEN56706 01-31-07, 08:11 AM i have sirius and its been great.....
Beer Man 01-31-07, 09:48 AM When you signed up for service, you agreed to that.
Which is exactly what I said in my previous post. I did not read their policies and that was my mistake. Stupid on my part.
As far as how I was treated, it was just the luck of the draw as to who I spoke to on the phone. She was very rude but the next person that I could have talked to could have been completely different. So I suppose that is a mute point.
My complaint with Sirius is that policy. I disagree with a policy that charges you a $75 disconnect fee for something that you have already paid for. When I spoke to them I didn't even want a prorated amount returned to me (they wouldn't have anyway because that's not their policy) I just didn't want someone else to be able to listen to 3 months of radio that I had already paid for. Which is what ended up happening. I realize (after the fact) that I could have paid month to month and avoided this situation but I had planed on keeping the service for a long time. But life had other plans for me.
Now I am more informed about Sirius's policies and I choose not to do business with a company when I disagree with their policies. My right as a consumer.

Wait, this kinda confuses me a little bit.
I currently have, and will continue to have, a pre-paid 1-year signup for Sirius.
Let's say I cancel(or decided not to RE-UP for the 1 year pre-paid), I will charged $75 for Fu$%ing leaving!?
If I called the customer service in June(my pre-paid 1 year begins every July 1 and runs for a year) and told them I decided not to re-up, and explained to them that I no longer wanted the service, I am going to get hit with a $75 charge?
That makes no sense. You mean I am signed into this company for PERPITUITY?
Until the end of time?
Boy, that is a STUPID FUC#$ng business model.
That makes no sense.
I know some people felt that if you transfered to a newer receiver they would charge you a $75 fee, but that was not the case.
At least with the e-mail I got sent in August of '05, but then again, that could have changed.
But if that is the fact with a pre-paid 6 month/1 year/2 years/3 years, then maybe I should change it too a month to month basis beginning in July.
But is that utter F'ing trash, if that is the case.

What I've been saying all along.

Steve Mehs 02-01-07, 02:25 AM You can call up at anytime and say that you do not wish to renew your service after the prepaid period ends and you'll never see another Sirius entry on your credit card statement, so long as you call in advance. But if you call up and say I want to cancel my service now, that’s when they’ll hit you with the cancelation fee.
GaryGnu 02-01-07, 06:27 PM All about the playlists for me. XM wins hands down.
Have both. XM distribution technology is far better (many fewer dropouts).
Sirius has more/better talk; XM has better music choices IMO.
Sirius baby! Seriously... :)
jonvall 02-18-07, 07:56 PM Ok....it really only comes down to one thing....Sirius has Stern and XM has those 2 lame asses that had to go to CBS to get some attention! Sirius wins! :) Otherwise the rest is all the same.

Jonvall, Have you actually listened to the music channels on each? They are far from being the same.
STEELERSRULE 02-19-07, 09:21 PM This XM vs. Sirius issue "MAY" soon die within a year anyway, with their merger being announced.
They will be the same since they will be one company, if approved.
Now we sit here and speculate on that for a year.
Oh, and who will survive and be on in the mornings?
Howard Stern?
Opie and Anthony?
Both?
This is, of course, just to throw a bucket of piss into this discussion, which likes to be done with regards to these two morning shows.
If it has not already happened in the Merger thread already. ;)

STEELERSRULE 02-19-07, 09:49 PM Yeah, PAT6366.
I just got done reading the entire thread, and posted, something stupid of course, just for myself.
Oh, well.
Please join me in just sitting back and reading over the next year while these two go at it.
I have to go over to SiriusBackstage, and XM411 to see how the FANBOYS feel.

Stupid?????????and what was that?
edit..you're right, it will be fun to watch. Cheers
I've had sirius for just over a year now. I got it because of Stern and the NFL (not an MLB fan at all), the music on sirius? Personally i don't like it. Repetitious playlists, and pretty much only play the hits (at least the stations i've listened to mostly hiphop). However i love all the talk radio channels on sirius. The NFL channels are great if you're a football fan, i also enjoy maxim and love the 2 stern channels. So go with what you like. Oh and i will say i heard my friends XM and the music on there is pretty damn good. If all i cared about was music i'd probably get XM.
hugh9269 02-24-07, 04:23 PM After listening to my friend Sirius for a week... The talk stations and NFL are quite better than XM, but for music XM is my first choice. They seem to go deeper in the album archive on each station, Sirius seems the play the obvious songs in IMHO...
