View Full Version : Gamefly is teh suck?
HorrorScope 01-07-07, 01:27 PM I recently made this list, which is pretty 360 centric. Does anyone know if Gamefly from past history understands the shortage issues they have and will react to this by increasing inventory by buying more stock? There are basically no 360 games available for shipment at this time. That isn't good service imo.
The list:
I am more concerned with availability by far. I only have one game at home now because all my games in que are "short wait". Here's my list (It's for Jr.):
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
ESRB: Teen Short Wait
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent
ESRB: Mature Short Wait
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas
ESRB: Mature Short Wait
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
ESRB: Teen Short Wait

ESRB: Mature Short Wait

ESRB: Everyone Short Wait DS
Call of Duty 3
ESRB: Teen Short Wait
N3: Ninety-Nine Nights
ESRB: Mature Short Wait
Hitman: Blood Money
ESRB: Mature Short Wait
THEY NEED AN OPTION TO EASILY SEE GAMES AVAILABLE FOR RENT! I don't believe they have that sorting option so you have to wade through pages.

SO OUT OF 119 ENTERIES FOR JUST 360 GAMES ONLY 4 GAMES ARE AVAIALBLE TODAY AND IT'S BEEN PRETTY MUCH LIKE THAT ALL WEEK! THAT BLOWS AND SUCKS AND IS IMO A SERIOUS ISSUE.
golferjdogg 01-07-07, 02:10 PM I may just be one of the lucky gamefly members because the issue with the short wait hasn't been an issue. I always make sure that the game I really want is first even if it isn't available yet. Lost Planet has been first on my list for awhile now and as long as I have it up there I am yet to have a short wait. I did have a short wait for Madden 07 on the 4th, it shipped on the 5th, and it arrived on the 6th. Its probably because I'm not far from one of their shipping centers in L.A. Hopefully Marvel comes in for you because I sent my copy in on the 3rd
Wow, some of those games should not be on the short wait list at all.
For example: Gun, Rumble Roses, King Kong, etc.
A lot of the games on your extended list are launch games that should be in the bargain bin by now.
Perhaps all the people that purchased 360s over the holidays signed up with Gamefly at the same time.
But I do feel your pain. I wanted to rent GOW before buying since I'm not really into shooters much. The pressure got to me and coupled with the sale at Target I broke down and bought it. COD is also on my wait list and I guess I'll have a long wait for that also (unless I buy it).
HorrorScope 01-07-07, 03:11 PM To Golf I have Lost Planet first as well. But didn't mention it because well it's not out. The list I made simply should be the list anyone would see today if they went into Gamefly and looked right now.
Andreo, yeah my guess was the Holiday rush as well as I am one of those. I won't buy a console without renting any more, just too much money. I'll buy a few as I go after I rent. I'm thinking this is becoming more the thought process out there and imo a smart thought.
I was hoping someone with a lot of Gamefly exp. has seen this and then could elaborate if they quickly remedied the problem or that this will be normal and getting games is really the "hitch" here. "Yeah you can have as many for $2x dollars per month, 2 at a time, but the catch is we don't have stock to send ya. lol.
Short wait usually means that they'll be shipped to me in a maximum of 5 hrs. And Ive used the service for around 6 months.
HorrorScope 01-07-07, 03:37 PM 5 hours or 5 days? I've been on 2 days of nothing sent due to "Short Wait". Thanks.
btf1980 01-07-07, 03:55 PM Gamefly lost my business a few months ago. I took a screenshot of my Q before I cancelled with them this past October.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a114/btf1980/gf.jpg
I was paying for the 4 games out deal, and I only had one game out, so I had 3 more games that were supposed to be sent to me. Everything was short wait. For well over a week. This was over $30 a month. They had none of the games in my Q, and did not have them in for me in over a week. So basically, half the time, I was waiting, but the monthly fee is still the same. Then the horrendous turnaround time. Up to 10 days sometimes, once 2 weeks. I paid money to wait. No thanks. I can't fathom how it takes that long in the continental US. I've received mail from Japan in less time.
I switched to Gamesnflix and boy what a difference. I get games and movies in 2 days, 3 days the max. Really great service. I just wish they had a better site. They also print what is in the envelope on the outside of it. That's just begging for things to get stolen.
SteelGrayScooby 01-07-07, 04:20 PM I thought Gamefly was the greatest thing ever. It was great for 360, Wii, and everything else.
Suddenly EVERY game is on short wait. It seams like they are over their heads with only one shipping center in CA. I'm about to cancel my membership and go elsewhere.
Short wait does not bother me......but seeing short wait for 5 days....is not short wait.
Maybe the holiday season exploded their business, but if they don't open a new center or get back on track soon....
ohmyblazes 01-07-07, 04:44 PM I've noticed this getting worse over the past few months as well. This coupled with the fact that my post office refuses to scan my games for Fast Return is really starting to irk me.
I think you guys are right in regards to them getting a lot more business after the holiday. Hopefully this will all be worked out soon because I really do like their service.

Sold I was looking for a testimonial for them! :)
Lol everything I put in their que is "Short Wait" as well. We'll see how this all pans out. I also notice they are just starting to get into HD movies.
Quikzilver 01-07-07, 05:25 PM Yeah, I got a 1 month free trial subscription from my co-worker and due to a similar screenshot of my Que, I will not be renewing my membership and I ended up with Star Trek Legacy and Need For Speed Most Wanted just because those were 2 of the 3-4 available games, everything else was a short wait.
No Thanks...
Doctor Krypton 01-07-07, 05:49 PM I quit gamefly because of the 'short wait' issues.
Well, I just signed up for Gameznflix. I want to see what the turnaround time for them is vs. Gamefly.
But to answer the OPs question about have I seen this before (I've been with them for a bit over a year now). The answer is no.
Short wait use to mean just that, a short wait. Maybe a couple of days.
What really bothers me about them right now is the shipping time. I used to receive games from them in about 2 days. Now I'm looking at a week for a game to arrive. This doesn't include the time for it to be mailed back.
Netflix takes 1 day to report a movie being received and 1 - 2 days for me to receive a new one from them.
I wanted to blame the increased shipping time on my move to a different part of the city and thus a new post office handling my mail. But if that was the case then my Netflix movies would also take a long time to arrive.
The only thing that I will miss about Gamefly if I leave is the "buy it" prices. They have some pretty decent prices on pre-played games. The best that I've seen around. But I think they have the highest monthly rental prices around also.
If gameznflicks has a decent turn around time then I will switch over to them. $20 a month for 6 games or movies out at a time sounds pretty darn good. Even if you have to shell it all out at one time ($249.00 per year).

I would try them month-to-month before you pay for the entire year. While gameznflicks is absolutely faster on turnaround, the selection often leave a lot to be desired. F.E.A.R. wasn't available on the 360 for a while after it was released. Also, a lot of movies (especially the high def stuff) aren't available. The website says they'll order something for you if they don't have it but that's a bunch of crap. Not one thing that's supposedly "on order" has ever come in.
The only reason I still use them is because the price and turnaround time is way better than Gamefly.
Thanks R1NLP.
I'm planning on giving it a few months before dropping 250 bucks.
The movies don't bother me much. I can't really think of a reason to get rid of Netflix, I just like the service to much.
But at the rate that Gamefly is going I won't be getting new releases from them either.
The price is a great extra also.
wokisan 01-07-07, 11:34 PM I have noticed this lately and have been watching this issue very closely.
It hasn't affected me as much since I have the 2 game plan and have been splitting my plan with both 360 and Wii games. However I hope this is temporary because I do not want to have to go searching for my 3rd game-renting service (Had gottaplay 1st but was disappointed and canceled)

Gameznflix has member "buy it" prices too - like $48 for an xbox 360 game, but the shipping is pretty slow.
scottro 01-08-07, 10:05 AM I've about had it with the "short wait" list for EVERYTHING.
For god's sake I'm playing Ridge Racer 6 right now because there was nothing else available.
I don't know what happened. The long shipping times were bad enough, but now I have to wait almost a week for games I don't even want.

I noticed with Netflix and Blockbuster online totally unrelated because this is games but those companies never followed the order of number 1 being my top pick....
NoThru22 01-08-07, 11:05 AM Does any game service have distribution centers on the East Coast yet? Why is every single one West Coast centric?

GamesnFlix does dont they??? If not thats news to me I thought they did.
NoThru22 01-08-07, 01:02 PM That's what I'm asking. I live in Baltimore. Are there any east coast distributors?
Daekwan 01-08-07, 01:28 PM Blockbuster is starting a games service
RAVEN56706 01-08-07, 01:44 PM Where did you see that Blockbuster was doing a game service?

I get GamezNFlix shipping from Boston to NY. Usually takes 2 days-- sometimes a little more. The website is not as nice as Gamefly and they sometimes make shipping errors, but it's worth it for me. The turnaround time for me with GameFly was often over a week to NY. That's just not acceptable.

* Seattle, WA
* Los Angeles, CA
The following centers are slated to be opened by the end of 2006

Gameznflix is starting to irritate me... I have had Tony Hawk on "short wait" for 2 weeks now...
The first 4 months i had them they where great, im hoping it will improve.
SixkillerNYC 01-08-07, 03:34 PM gamefly got annoying enough that I cancelled and went with Gameznflix. Their website is horrid and their support is pretty poor, but I'm not fed up with them yet.
spinksjinx 01-08-07, 04:32 PM Where did you see that Blockbuster was doing a game service?
Blockbuster has always had a in-store game pass...Its news to me if they are starting an online service although I wouldnt doubt it...Id be disappointed to see a price increase if it were to happen although its likely despite GnF offering movies and games for the same price of Blockbusters movies only.
SteelGrayScooby 01-08-07, 08:27 PM I've used BB in-store game pass ever since it came out during that summer when they offered it for 3 months.
When they came out with the 360 games you needed a credit card each time you rented a 360 game and that got annoying so I stopped.
Also there were really hot girls who worked there and I looked like a loser renting 2 movies and 2 games at a time almost every day. So I switched to online service and never looked back.
Saves gas, HUGE selection from Netflix, I actually won't cancel my Gamefly service because I do have faith in them to bounce back from the holiday season. <--1 million PS3's sold, 3 million Wii's, a lot of 360's.....no wonder they are getting hammered.
And their used game store is TERRIFIC. I rented Ninja Gaiden and loved it so much I kept it for only 15 dollars.....
CloudKind 01-08-07, 10:48 PM Why won't Netflix do games????
ice1874193 01-08-07, 11:31 PM I got my games right away. Recent increases in wait time may be due to new promotions they have going on. They've been giving away free month trials the last few months. Thats the only reason i signed up. Thought i'd try it out....no complaints so far
gamefly got annoying enough that I cancelled and went with Gameznflix. Their website is horrid and their support is pretty poor, but I'm not fed up with them yet.
I was going to mention that their web site left a lot to be desired. One of the slowest sites that I've been to in a while.
It's almost like someone posted a front page Digg story about them and the site it being hammered.
But my first title was shipped today, no notice from Gameznflix that they shipped it though. I was a little disappointed not to get the notice, and don't hold much hope of getting a "we received your game" notice either. But perhaps that's on their list of things to do (along with upgrading their servers and connection).

They've always done the free trial. Quite frankly if that's what's going on, I think they should throttle the accounts of free trial people in favor of long time paying customers, but that wouldn't exactly be great for business. Of course neither is chasing away those long time subs.

It's even worse than that. On some machines i use, I have to log in 5 or 6 times before I'm actually logged in, and then I'll randomly get logged out while using the site. It's an abomination. I opened up a support ticket and the response from their tech was, "Well I can't reproduce your problem on my machine, so it's not an issue, sorry."
I usually get "we shipped your game" notices form them, so maybe check your junk folder.
prayformojo 01-09-07, 12:40 PM I have had Gameznflix for almost a year, when games were a short wiat, they truly were a short wait, maybe 2-3 days; however, now it seems like new releases are impossible to get. Rainbox Six Vegas has been the only thing in my queue for a week and never shipped. I really want to upgrade to the $250 option, but do not want to get stuck with their service for a full year if it does not improve. Does anyone have experience with the 6 out plan, do they seem to ship games faster for these subs? I loved this service for the first six months, but have been very disappointed since October.
SixkillerNYC 01-09-07, 12:42 PM it sounds like Gameznflix might be getting overloaded as well.

No faster for 6 out plan. If anything they have an incentive to be even slower if they have you on the hook for a year. They are extremely slow with new releases. I've had the same issues trying to get Rainbow Six Vegas-has been only thing in my queue for weeks and nothing shipped-even though it is listed as short wait. They are slow to get some new releases on their site too. They just recently added FEAR and Guitar Hero II.
prayformojo 01-09-07, 12:51 PM No doubt, another problem with GzNFx is that they never have HD DVDs when they launch the HD DVDs always show up as on order for a month or two, a great example was Christmas Vacation, which GzNFx showed as recently released, but when you added it to queue it showed up as on order and did so until well after Christmas when I removed it from my queue. I just wish they would get things figured out, b/c the price is right.

Yeah, I've had movies on order since SEPTEMBER. These are just regular DVD's too! They have a bad habit of listing things on the website that they probably have no intention of getting in or ordering for you.
It's too bad Gamefly's turnaround and pricing is so crappy. Otherwise I would probably go back to them.
Of course, I've had Bully for like 3 months now so people like me probably have something to do with it too. :D
So far I'm pleased with Gameznflix. I signed on really early so I get 8 Games/DVDs for about $17 a month. Right now I have COD3, Splinter Cell Double Agent, Full Auto, Superman, Dead Rising, and the rest in movies. I have had Rainbow Six in my top 5 for about 2 weeks, but I really wouldn't have the time to play it anyway. GoW takes most of my gaming time right now.
I also just added a couple of HD-DVD titles to the list so the turn around on this medium is TBD.
I wish they would update there web site. Although their customer service through email have been helpful in the past.
MNMatthias 01-09-07, 04:08 PM I googled Gameznflix to see what they were all about and read a whole slew of negative things.
Check out this thread which dates back to 2004: http://www.joelcomm.com/gameznflixcom.html
And no wonder. They spend all their money on advertising and overhead and no actually acquiring any inventory: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=GZFX.OB&annual
MNMatthias 01-09-07, 04:23 PM Also came across this which was the lead of a Wall Street Journal story:
Netflix, which pioneered the business of renting movies by mail and has signed up three million subscribers, is avoiding videogames partly because it's a lot tougher to make money on them. It costs much more to acquire games than movies, the titles are popular for shorter time periods and the audience is narrower, among other challenges.
So why doesn't Netflix do games? Too expensive.
DerekinMerrick 01-09-07, 04:24 PM Gameznflix is OVERLOADED NOW!! there is no question. I was a member for like 5-6 monthns now. 5-6 months ago 2-3 games out at a time everything was so quick shipping and recieving the games back. As of today I have had Rainbow six vegas and the new need for speed carbon since they came out. I only had one game and was paying for 3 they sat for a short wait for over 3 weeks and never shipped. I emailed them and they told me a short wait is up to 14 days. I waited over 21 and got nothing. Shut them down real fast. Its the best idea but now they advirtise all over the place they dont increase their inventory but they will gladly take all of your money. But increase their inventory is out of the question. ITs too bad.
HorrorScope 01-09-07, 06:08 PM FWIW I got my GamesNFlix stuff in. I signed up yesterday and got my 3 games in today. So I am on a 1 day mailing distance which is good. Everything I put in que had "Short Wait" but in a few hours they had 3 things to send me. They are really weak with HD DVD at this time. I had 8 things in que and they got me out #1, #4 and #5. I'll see how this goes, if it does go ok, I'll drop Gamefly for this an extra game at a time and less so that's a win-win. If they did more with HD DVD I'd drop Netflix as well and bump up to the 6 at a time, but I see they aren't ready for that yet. Gamefly didn't have something in my Que in stock for two days before shipping, but they got that coming now but seem to take two days to get me product in the mail.
I just got my first HD-DVD from Gameznflix - Apollo 13. Not my first choice but I put it on my list I believe on Monday. They definately have an uphill battle (stock price is falling) but I like the service so far.
I've been a Gameznflix member for about six months and it has definitely gotten a lot worse since last fall. I used to be able to get all new 360 releases immediately but now I get "on order" even though I keep the new games first in my queue for days before they come out. Their turnaround time is still good for me (4 days total, shipped from Kentucky to Wisconsin) but I'm probably going to cancel soon. Their PS3 inventory is especially low--everything is in "high demand."
Also, their customer service is abominable--almost nonexistant. I've been trying to contact them about the same issue since early November. I've made six separate help desk inquiries about it (a new one every two weeks or so) and have not had a reply to any of them. They don't even reply! I even made the title of my last inquiry "I would like to cancel my account." That was four days ago... no answer yet.
I used to use Gamefly but they were too expensive and their turnaround time was about twice as long as Gameznflix for me.
I may just go back to buying new games and Ebaying them when I'm done. That's more expensive and requires more work but at least I can play what I want when I want. For movies I use Blockbuster Online cause the in-store returns are invaluable for me.
RAVEN56706 01-10-07, 12:56 PM i have had alot of game rental places..... gamefly, gamerang, and gameznflix..... so far its ok but i hate the turn around...
the website is crappy and the game selection can be horrible... i might just buy games and when i get tired sell them.... its getting to the point that i am just losing patience....
MNMatthias 01-10-07, 01:17 PM I'm thinking until someone builds an intelligent business model no game service will really be good.
As I quoted yesterday, Netflix doesn't want to get into the market because games cost too much, have too small of a consumer base (relative to movies), and have shorter attention spans. The only way I would see the business model really working would be if someone like Blockbuster who is going to carry the inventory anyways, enters the market. And then places levels of membership, with the default membership making new releases unavailable the first 4-6 weeks after release so that they still extract value from their normal customer base. There could be a "premium" membership that would have access to new games from day one. But otherwise you would just accept that you wouldn't have the newest games and the tradeoff for that would be an affordable membership and at least no frustration on watching a game in your queue never arrive.
Until that time, though, probably best off buying the titles you really want new and buying the titles you kind of want used.
RAVEN56706 01-10-07, 02:14 PM i say lets make our own website

Same here. I dropped Gamefly because of the shipping time to me in North Texas and the fact that I could also rent movies from Gameznflix for the same price. Gameznflix has been great. Usually takes 2 days max for me to get my games/movies from Dallas. Customer service is faster as well. I had a movie that never showed up after more than a week. Within a few hours of me sending the email, they had another copy headed my way.
I highly recommend them to gamers but I wouldn't recommend them to someone that's not a gamer though as their movie selection isn't great. The only 360 game I haven't been able to find on their site is FEAR.
DerekinMerrick 01-10-07, 03:16 PM Gameznflix send me 3 games too as soon as I signed. But wait until a good new game comes out. Forget it you will be waiting a long time. And I am 1 day shipping away too so that has nothing to do with it. They do have quick ship times but the problem is they dont ship.
Ironically Gameznflix just responded to my customer service inquiry... this is the first time I've been helped in months. Now let's see how long it takes them to resolve the issue...
charmedreally 01-17-07, 05:28 PM i just checked my queue and nothing is on short wait. in any case, as pointed out short wait gets shipped out pretty quickly. video game renint is in it's infancy really. i've rented from just about everyone and can say from personal experience that gamefly is the best overall.
HorrorScope 01-17-07, 05:39 PM Yeah to update I'm doing both gamefly and gameznflix and both are doing pretty well definitely a lot of short wait on both sides but those are taking too long. I'm going to keep gameznflix 3 for $17 most likely because it's cheaper, one more game and they are only about 30 miles away. It's really quick on the ship and turnaround. I'd do their 6 deal, still might either way after more trial if they really had HD DVD's to rent, they list them but they aren't in stock. 6 at a time for a little of $20 is a steal. But as said both are performing about the same for me in availability.
All I can say is do NOT sign up for the 6 out a time plan. I seriously suspect that gameznflix has degraded my service because they have my money...
I had the 3 at a time plan for a few months (6-7 months ago) and was very happy with the service provided. I bit the bullet and upgraded to 6 at a time and was still pretty happy until last november or so. Their service has gone to utter crap. I can't seem to get them to ship anything to me what so ever and ever item in my queue is on short wait. I can't even remember the last time I actually was able to have 6 items out at once.
They have no customer service number and send crappy canned responses to e-mail inqueries. I would drop them but I can't!

I seriously think that the game rental sites are still suffering from the Christmas holiday. Though I have to admit that Gamefly's service went to crap in October for me as far as shipping. However everything being out of stock happened right around the holiday.
I'm sure they are adjusting to meet demand. But its frustrating for the customers that have been around for awhile.
FickleBeast 01-18-07, 10:03 AM I've had Gamefly for about 2.5 months now. While I don't always get the first choice on my GameQ, I've never had to wait for them to ship a game. I did notice that the turnaround is sometimes slow, but I think that was because of New Years Day and President Ford's funeral. With Fast Return, I'll usually get a game within 4 days or so to the East Coast. I hope I don't start experiencing the same problem that you guys are describing...
So far I've received:
Splinter Cell
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
FEAR
Dead Rising
Viva Pinata
Call of Duty 3
Lego Star Wars II
charmedreally 01-18-07, 11:20 AM to me it all comes down to not having the buy and also having the seleciton to play anything i want. so gamefly gets me vote on that score. delivery has been up and down but more up than down in general and if with their fast return service it's speeds up a lot. i figure a few bumps in the road. it's better than shelling out $60 bucks for a game i'm not even sure i'll like. i'm sure netflix didn't figure it out in a day. somebody will get it right and i'm betting gamefly. netflix focused just on movies and theri now the best. gamefly focuses just on games and they'll be the best game supplier soon.
Death=Adder 01-18-07, 11:45 AM I have used Gamefly on and off for the last few years and I have never had a problem. Of course the fact that I only do the one game at a time plan and I live in LA helps. Games that are shipped get to me the next day so I have no waiting problems with delivery. Any games that are on a short wait status usually become available within a couple of days. Since I only do the one game plan I keep only one game in my queue. This way the moment the game I want is available they ship it. This is a good thing to do if you want a game the day its released. If that game is the only one in your list and you have no games out, they will usually ship it immediately.
WED0420 01-18-07, 12:35 PM I wonder if this is a chicken vs. egg problem.
Example: I currently have GOW and Double Agent. I've had them both for over a month and I'm ready for something new, but everything in my Q is short or long wait.
I have no reason to send back a game and get nothing in return. However, if all of Gamefly's subscribers have this philosphy, that would explain why there are no games to be recirculated.
I don't think there's a cheap solution to their problem. Either buy more inventory of lose a good chunk of subscribers.
RAVEN56706 01-18-07, 01:01 PM i began just buying the games i want and i will sell them on ebay after i get tired.....
charmedreally 01-18-07, 01:04 PM the logjam could clear up at any time. i've bought a couple games from gamefly that i like, so that if i get stuck waiting for something else i play them. i don't think about it too much. sometimes i retool my queue but mostly there's always something i want to play. and i never wait more than a few days to get what i want. people are just so impatient. i mean go buy the damn thing for $60 if you want instant gratification. of course then you're stuck with it. and you may not like it as much as you thought. there's so many perks to renting and all people do is complain about it.
ragedogg69 01-18-07, 08:52 PM I started with Gamefly 3 years ago. I had a 1 game out at a time plan and for about 18 months everything was great. Then they started taking 7 days to just get me games. I complained, they said nothing changed. They also started charging me tax on my purchases. Being out of state, this shouldnt happen.... so i cancelled. and found that there are no better place to get games and at $60, its just not smart to buy games and trade trade them.
I didn't know that Gameznflix was an over the counter stock. The message board for that stock seem pretty brutal. Though the Yahoo stock message boards are normally a battlefield no matter what the stock is.
I think I will keep gameznflix for a few more months. But I'm really not impressed with how they get new games. I put Warioware as one of my 3rd game (3 out plan). I didn't add more then 3 games so I would be sure to get Warioware when it came out. Well it came out 2 days ago and they still had it listed this morning as not released. While Gamefly has it as available.
So while it will take GF almost a week to get the game to me. It will take GnF almost a week to actually buy the game.
I'm also a bit worried about the prices that they put on the pre-owned games (and movies). I've been thinking about buying Descent. To the point where I priced it at Best Buy last weeked (I picked up Silent Hill instead since it was on my buy list first). Best Buy's price is 30 bucks. GnF price is $32. Now why would I want to pay 2 extra dollars for a used movie vs new?
And I think the largest complaint that I have is the web site. It is simply painful to navigate because it's so slow. It feels like I'm using a 14.4 modem instead of the 15Mb connection that I have.
But perhaps things will change in the next couple of months that will make me change my mind. However I don't think I'll be dropping Gamefly any time soon for them.
DM2006RI 01-19-07, 01:13 AM Seems like there really is no good option out there right now.
Gamefly I've been with on and off for the last couple of years. Their customer service is fine but the waits grew unmanageable over time and my post office also never used the "Fast Return" so by the end it was routinely 7-10 business day turnaround for me to return a game and get a new one. Not worth it and their service is also FAR too expensive IMO.
Gameznflix -- great when I started with it last fall but the amount of available titles has been falling off like a rock. Godawful customer service as many have said but you get what you pay for at $17 a month.
One word of warning -- NEVER BUY A GAME, OR PRE-ORDER ONE, FROM THEM. I preordered STAR TREK LEGACY back in August and was charged at the time. This game was released well over a month ago and I still haven't received it. Emails to their customer service come back with the routine "CS India" response of "you will get a notice when it ships."
Obviously I've talked with my credit card company, they've given me a conditional credit and I can't urge you enough to avoid the temptation of preordering a game from them. If you have a problem you will get NO help from them at all because, it seems, they don't actually hire any help to do so!
Shizelbs 03-23-07, 08:58 PM gamefly got annoying enough that I cancelled and went with Gameznflix. Their website is horrid and their support is pretty poor, but I'm not fed up with them yet.
Same here. If I wanted to return a game to Gamefly, from my mailbox to them back to my mailbox was 7-8 days. If they want to get my business back, they NEED to establish more distribution centers. I mean, I'm near Seattle, and the one in LA is just not enough. I feel bad for people in the NE US.
I just passed my 1 year anniversary with GameFly, and once I learned how to deal with them I've been happy. Last year I had some "short wait" problems, but it's been months since I've seen that... mostly because I get all my games from them shipped out on release day -- here's how:
I have 3 out at a time and keep my Q very selective. I don't put anything on there I wouldn't be thrilled to arrive in the mailbox. As a new release that I want nears, I return one of the games about a week before. The new release is usually shipped out on release day, and I get it the following week, East Coast shipping.
So yes, there about 2 weeks (usually less) that I don't have one game, but I still have 2 at home so I'm happy playing those.
If you are expecting Netflix-quality speed, GameFly isn't for you. But if you can handle getting the new releases a week after release day, keep track of when to send back a game, and only put must-rent games in your Q... it's a very worthwhile service.
Mcklein 03-24-07, 03:12 PM not netflix..instead of short wait...very long wait will appear...LOL
I have the same issue with gamefly they keep advertising everywhere and they seem to have tons of members but they dont like to purchase more copies of their games....really bad for their service if you ask me.
LR6AGB001 03-24-07, 07:28 PM TMNT was released on Tuesday and it was in my mailbox Friday afternoon. This is how it was in the past, seems nothing has changed. From CA to NYC, it's pretty reasonable. The perks with gamefly is that they have every possible next gen title available and on top of that keep up with DS games unlike gameznflix.
SpeedyHTPC 12-30-07, 10:00 PM Gamefly is teh suck. But then Netflix is also sucking with long waits. So if they cant do it with DVDs then games will be even worse. I'm thinking of just buying it retail and selling it on half.com when I'm done.
Swift Mojo Hand 12-31-07, 02:13 AM I have the one game at a time plan and I always get what I want. I really do not know what I am doing right, I love Gamefly.
/If I really want to play a game I go buy it.
number1laing 01-03-08, 03:42 PM I just want to chime in and say GameFly does indeed suck. I had it for about 5 months and cancelled. It's fine if you have no problem getting a game on the bottom of your queue, its fine if you don't mind being "throttled" for returning games too fast, it's fine if you play games with your queue and make sure you "time" returns to get a new release, it's fine if you don't mind being unable to rent a newish release for a month or two, but for how many people is that alright? I signed up to play all the new releases and it just didn't work.
IMO I think most people use GF because it's better than Gameznflix or whatever... but compared to BB or NetFlix though, its total garbage. Yea, that might just be because of the realities of acquiring games and the like, but garbage is garbage! Giving them $20 a month for their crap service is approval. I have more than enough unplayed games I don't need that.
zingerhill 01-03-08, 04:06 PM I think DaverJ had it exactly right. You need to game GameFly in order to get the best value. It's not perfect and nothing like the movie services, but it's better than anything else out there. I go on and off of Gamefly when I think there might be something I need. It's really hard for me to buy new games when they depreciate so quickly. I paid $60 for Crackdown in Feb 07. Now Gamefly is selling it used for $12. That's an 80% decline in less than a year! I can't think of another purchase that drops in value so fast (maybe a day old newspaper).
eddy_winds 01-03-08, 04:17 PM Gamefly lost my business a few months ago.
I'm generally satisfied with Gamefly. If you know when something new is coming and you really want it, you turn in another game 2-3 days in advance. Then your chances of getting the new game are pretty good.
But I've also had times when everything on my list is on "wait" and I get sent some random PSP title from the bottom.

If I did that they'd get it 2-3 days after the game comes out. They don't mark stuff received from me until 4-5 days after I send it. Interestingly, their shipping to me seems to consistently be 3 days after they notify me a new game shipped.
Just joined gamefly on Tues. and they had my 1st game here by Thursday(today)Burnout Paradise. It was listed as low availability. I'm probly just getting new sub treatment but i'm liking it so far. They also just added a distribution center in Tampa, FL which is close to me-so that might have helped too.
RafaelSmith 01-31-08, 04:21 PM I have been very pleased with Gamefly service. Wish I could say the same thign about Netflix.

Trust me, you are getting the new sub treatment. Same thing happened to me with The Darkness. Once you start handing them money the situation changes.

I gave up on the online services a long time ago. My local Hollywood Video gets most of the new games in. $8.00 for five days seems like a pretty good deal.
yep, all the services (GF, GNF) seem to send you the games real fast for the first month or two, when you are new.
then, once they have you hooked, they seem to slowly lower your priority so that you have to wait weeks.
personally i just cancelled GNF (gameznflix) because i hadnt recieved a game in OVER THREE MONTHS.
I was on the 2-at-a-time subscription and my queue had about 10 items, many new but that's no excuse for over three months wait (my queue wa: halo3, bioshock, assassin creed, Kane & Lynch, COD4, zeldaTP-wii, mario galaxy-wii, resident evil 4-wii, a few more i cant remember).
when i emailed customer service, they told me to put some movies in my queue or some less popular games. they said i should put a ton of games in my queue and not just ten.
i responded by cancelling.
nnarum23 05-18-08, 08:35 PM How is Gamefly now? I've thought about signing up for it, but after reading some of these replies, I don't think it's worth it... Have they changed up their ways?
confidenceman 05-19-08, 01:25 AM No. Gamefly is not a fast service. It's usually a 4-5 day turnaround.
However, if you use it as a "try before you buy" service, it's great. You get great prices on used games. If you don't like a game, you know within just a couple of hours, so you get it right back in the mail.
But it's not worthwhile if you're interested in renting games in order to play through them. The turnaround time is too long for it to be a good alternative to just buying a game.
It's also good, if you'd just like to see what a particular game is like. But if you're hoping to rent these games in order to play them through fully, it's often cheaper just to buy them instead.
...to follow up on what confidenceman was saying:
Gamefly is a good service if:
-you like to jump from game to game.
-you don't need games on release day.
-you like to try out games you are not sure you want to buy...
-...or you like to quickly play through short or lesser-reviewed games you know you wouldn't buy.
The best way to use Gamefly is to do at least 2-at-a-time and only fill up your GameQ with games you absolutely want to rent. If you like the popular upcoming titles, be sure to return one of your games 5 days before new games' release day and not have any released games in your Q.
scottro 05-20-08, 04:27 PM The only reason I keep GF is b/c:
a. The Pittsburgh distribution center is right near my house so turnaround is really fast
b. If you manage your queue well you can get a brand new unplayed game for the used price (I did this with GTA IV - they shipped it on release day, I clicked Keep It before it even got to my house :) )
However sometimes I let games sit for a month or more and just end up keeping them to "cut my losses"...I'm sure I've overpaid for as many I got on the cheap.
charmedreally 07-01-08, 10:04 AM I have a thread going about their new texas ship center. Now I'm getting games in 2 days. To me that is fast, unless they used fedex or somethin. I like being able to try different games but I also use it to buy games if I really like em. And like I said in my last post I gotten several big releases within a week of release. Hell a lot cheaper and better stock than $9 to rent a game for a week from blockbuster and throwing down $60 for every game im interested in. I use the 1 at a time which works, 2 at a time is better, you can always have 1 game while waiting for the other.
Oh and you can sell games back to gamefly for membership credit, could literally pay for itself.
So obviously my answer to your question is NO they don't suck.
