I have been a long time lurker and today I bought the HD-A2 from BB. I have a decent knowledge of HT technology and I look forward to participating in these discussions. Now I gotta go hook this puppy up!

Well hope you enjoy your purchase. I got the 360 HD-DVD addon. Good value, but I might return it and buy the LG Dual Format player. So I can enjoy all the HiDef movies that are released. Both Bluray and HD-DVD. :D

Well I fired up the HD-A2 and I got no picture. So I unplugged it and tried again and it booted to the menu of King Kong but then it made this terrible grinding sound and shut it-self off. I unplugged again and rebooted and it turned on and then turned itself off again immedaitely. Now it will not turn on and my movie is stuck inside. Looks like I am on my back to BB for an exchange. Luckily it is only 5 mins away.

Sounds like you got a unit that was dropped Steve. Once you get the replacement let us know which other movies you jump into! I finally got around to picking up Chronicles of Riddick this past week, outstanding detail. Now if only I could find Serenity somewhere...

Good choices. Serenity's a knock-out if you like your sci-fi tinged with a bit of comedy.

OK, Just got back from BB with the exchange. They were able to get my King Kong out of the previous machine but they scratched it and gave me a new one. I will hook this up and report back in a few. For equipment I use the new Sony SXRD 60" (KDS-60A2000). This baby puts out an incredible image on Discovery HD.

I am kind of new to this HD disc stuff, so I have a question. Is Blue-ray basically the same thing as HDDVD? I see this Blue-ray stuff everywhere I go and I have only heard of HDDVD from this website. Will the Blue-ray work in the HD-A2?

No Blu-ray is a totally different format. You have to have a Blu-ray player for those discs.

Welcome to the world of HD DVD! I am pretty sure you'll become addicted quite soon, and there is no cure I am aware of.

About Blu Ray: it's a totally different format and you need a special player or a PS3 to play Blu Ray discs (BDs). Beware: Each format has its die hard fans who will feel insulted every time you'll write something negative about one of their beloved discs. I have both and I feel, with what I think is the majority of people who indeed experienced both HD DVDs and BDs, that the average PQ of HD DVDs is superior to the average PQ of BDs. But I also feel the audio encoded on BDs is, on the average, superior to the audio encoded on HD DVDs.

Let me stop here before I get flamed for my unholy thoughts! And welcome again to the forum!

Blu-Ray is a different format that is trying to compete with HD DVD. Imho Blu-Ray will eventually become the next Betamax of the 21st century so you've made the best choice is going with HD DVD. :)

Honey1, you nailed it. I have both formats too. I feel that my HD DVD player has equal and sometimes better PQ. For audio, I much prefer my blu player. I'm still not happy with the bass from my A2. So in conclusion, it may be the hardware - not the software. I don't know.

OK, Guys here's an update. I just got done watching Hulk and a good portion of King Kong.

It seems as though I may be having some audio problems with this new HD-A2. It seems like the audio is very very low in comparison to my regular DVD's. I had to turn my receiver up much higer. Also I had an issue with the HDMI cable for audio. When I was watching King Kong the actor's mouths were faster then the sound. I could not get them to match up. Why is it doing this? Hulk worked really good for audio though. I did notice in the scene in Hulk where they are in a desert my disc skipped ever so slightly a couple of times. Is this normal?

I hope I did not get another faulty HD-A2, please tell me I did not guys!

In my opinion, it's probably the only Blu-ray player worth paying for.

I think there is still a deal on the Toshiba where you can get three free HD DVDs. I'm not sure when it ended though.

Edit: Yeah, the deal is still on. Click the link below.

Well for a 3rd time today I went to BB :) Feels like I am doing a home improvent project only replacing Lowes with BB..lol.

I went over to BB and bought a new HDDVD as I thought maybe my previous 2 had issues and I found once of my favourite movies of last year, The Matador.

When I placed this in the HD-A2 it took around 4 minutes to get to the menu screen and then it just froze there. I am assuming at this point that I got another bad HD-A2 because all 3 movies had one glitch or another. Am I safe in assuming this? What else could it be if not the HD-A2? I really need some help because the family would like to watch a HDDVD tonight (Sunday tradition to watch a movie as a group).

Many people have had issues with the Matador dvd.

See this thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=773931&highlight=matador

This movie (along with a few of the first Weinstein Company's releases) were their first HD DVD releases and unlike Warner and Universal, did not go through the right channels to create/author their movies, hence the problems found in these releases. Newer Weinstein movies should perform better.

Congrats to a fellow New Englander.Welcome to the fold!

If you really want to see a top notch HD pressing as well as a darn entertaining movie, pick up the UK import of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.I think most others that have it and post here with agree that it's among the top 3 HD discs in their libraries.

We ended up going out to dinner tonight to Old Chicago's which happens to be next to BB. After eating we went to BB and I returned King Kong and The Matador. They only gave me store credit, not a refund, oh well.

So we wondered over to the Blue-ray area and we decided to try out the movie called "The Wild." We took it home and played it in the PS3 and all i can say is OMG!! What a beautiful picture these HD devices are capable of!! This movie looked so 3 dimensional it seemed like you could reach in to the tv and touch the animals. My kids were amazed as well. Has anyone seen this? I was also surprised how much faster the movie loaded in the Play Station 3 when you compare it to the HD-A2.

Tomorrow I will exchange the HD-A2 again and hopefully I will have some luck. Wish me luck guys!!

It has nothing to do with him having a negative experience with HD-DVD. It has to do with the way his posts are written. They ALL read like pro-BD, anti-HD-DVD comments, cleverly disguised as friendly, everyday-Joe stories.

I fear terrorism, prejudice, homophobia, taxes, George W. and Rob Schneider. I don't "fear" anything about this silly format war. Besides, I own an XA-1 and a PS3. So piss off.

Steve-
the lip synching issue may have to do with the audio output settings on the A2.
I would toggle between PCM and bitstream and see if that affects anything.

I just saw a post by someone with a synch problem with another movie and this is what he found fixed it.

they welcomed you in the first 2 pages, but as soon as you picked up a PS3 and BD format and witnessed how better it is than HD-DVD they called you a troll

welcome to HD-DVD FUD forum
YOU ARE ONE OF THE BIGGEST TROLLS IN EITHER FORUMS. PEOPLE LIKE YOU SHOULD BE BANISHED FROM THIS SITE SO THAT THERE CAN BE PEACEFUL AND INTELLECTUAL DISCUSSIONS ON EITHER FORMAT. :(

YOU DO MORE DAMAGE TO BR THAN HELPING IT WITH YOUR BIASED TIRADES, AND FANBOYISM.

THE OP WAS TELLING SUPPORTERS OF HD DVD THAT HE JUST BOUGHT ONE OF THEIR PLAYERS. HE DOESN'T NEED FANBOY AMBASSADORS FROM THE BR FORUM TO MAKE HIM FEEL FOOLISH ABOUT HIS DECISION.

I HAVE BOTH PLAYERS AND YOU ARE THE ONE CREATING FUD BY OUTRIGHT LYING! THE BD FORMAT IS NOT SUPERIOR TO HD DVD; IF ANYTHING, THEY ARE JUST BECOMING EQUAL IN THE PQ AREA. SO KEEP YOUR TROLLING TO YOUR SELF. :(

Why would someone pay $1200 for the LG, when they could buy both a PS3, 360, and the hd add on for about the same price?
I was just messing around. I'm only supporting HD-DVD. They have enough releases to fill my HD hunger. The LG is tooo expensive for me. If they come out with a Bluray addon for the 360, then I will have to go dual format. But that won't happen unless HD-DVD ceases to exist.

Sorry if my post sounded as if I was taking a jab at you for suggesting purchase of the LG. That was not my intention. I'm just wondering how LG expects to sell them at the price, maybe there's some advantage to it that I am missing?

I have been a long time lurker and today I bought the HD-A2 from BB. I have a decent knowledge of HT technology and I look forward to participating in these discussions. Now I gotta go hook this puppy up!

Welcome to HD DVD! :)

A the cheapest retail price for a Set top BD device is $700. Plus $500 for set top HD-DVD =1200. Now for the same price you combine them into one unit. Some people don't like using game systems as Movie players. Second the PS3 uses a Bluetooth remote and therefor not compatible with Harmonies or remote commanders which for some people who have successfully got all of the functions for all of their remotes to work on a single device to all of a sudden just to be mean are now stuck using a controller as a remote becomes an annoying prospect.

I am kind of new to this HD disc stuff, so I have a question. Is Blue-ray basically the same thing as HDDVD? I see this Blue-ray stuff everywhere I go and I have only heard of HDDVD from this website. Will the Blue-ray work in the HD-A2?[/QUOTE]

After this post I felt the same way, a BR troll.

In my opinion, it's probably the only Blu-ray player worth paying for.

Being a Blu-Ray player is currently the only reason worth buying a PS3. The games thus far just haven't been there.

And I'm sorry, but I couldn't look at LAGOSIAN's posts without asking if anyone else wonders if his caps lock key is stuck on? Man oh man. :D
