Living in the middle of nowhere MN, I have access to DSL. I was wondering what the minimum download/upload speed I would have to have for my PS3 to use with online gaming? Right now I have a few options:
.............................................Download/Upload
Hickory Tech DSL Lite.................384k/128k (way too slow?)
Hickory Tech DSL Prime.............3Mbps/512k
MediaCom Online.....................5Mbps/256k
Knowing absolutely nothing aout high-speed internet and DSL, can anybody help me? The MediaCom is significantly more money, and I'm wondering if I can get away with the Hickorytech option(s)? For online gaming which is more important? (time it takes to download a demo etc, isn't that overly important to me) Download or Upload speed? Any help would be appreciated.
BTW: I am not planning on a WiFi connection immediately and probably wouldn't use it for the PS3 anyway.
Thanks.

DSL Lite will work fine if only one device is using it at a time (no internet connection sharing).
Since most people use home networking to allow multiple devices to share the internet connection, DSL Prime or Cable will be your best bet.

dsl prime would be best imo.

If you ever want to download anything with your PS3 you'll want DSL Prime because the PS3 currently does not support background downloading (i.e. you have to wait for your download to finish before you can do anything else). For just online gaming, the DSL Lite should be fine.
The more the better if price is not a factor. If price is a factor and 10.00 gets you twice the speed it is still worth it. IF double the speed costs you double it isn't worth it IMO. I had 1.5. then 3.5. Now I have 5.0 down and up load through FIOS cable and wouldn't mind 10 or 50 MB download. If I downloaded an 800mb game demo it took me about 20 min. It would take 1/2 that time at 10MB download and about two min. at 50mb download.

Thanks for the info folks. I appreciate it. I live in the middle of nowhere MN (south-central part of the state). No cable, just DSL.

I play PS3 and 360 online. I'm on a US military base in Honduras and my connection maxes out at about 150k/sec (15K/sec) with equal upload speed. I routinely play Gears of War and Resistance with friends back home in Seattle and get very little lag, most of the time none.

people are assuming that the MediaCom is cable (it looks alot like cable services currently being offered as far as the speed goes)
While you say you live in the middle of no where, you at least have access to DSL. I live less than 5 miles from a fairly large town with a State University in it and I can't get DSL...I live too far away from my Central Office (CO) - you may want to check your distance to your CO before you bank on those speeds - the further away you are from it, the more the speed drops.

I am getting hooked up to DSL, through Frontier, on Friday. They couldn't guarantee the speed I would have untill a tech guy showed up on Friday. Kinda annoying, but it is my best option at this time. I am also out in the boonies a bit. Good luck with your DSL.

At least I don't have to sign a contract. Hickorytech goes month to month. If I end up with a lousy connection, I'll drop them.
