Just picked up an HC3 during boxing week. The Sony HDV tapes were CDN$19.99 each, seems kind of steep. I've read you're supposed to keep the same brand, so are there any other Sony DV tapes that are good for recording HD video and not quite as expensive?

Also, I have an older Toshiba 51HX83 with an unused DVI input I want to use for the camcorder. Do I just need an HDMI to DVI cable and an audio cable to connect from the camera to the TV?

Sony premium miniDV tapes should work no different on HC3 than from Sony HD kind. And they cost about $2.5 each if you buy them 5+ pack.

HC3's HDMI is kind of picky. it seems to work only with newer HDTV models. Many DVI inputs do not work with HC's HDMI. You need to try it to find out, but don't be surprised if it doesn't.

So there is no standard w.r.t. HDV tapes versus DV tapes? I.e., they are interchangeable?

Yes, they are completely interchangable. HD version of miniDV tapes is manufactured to a tighter specs, and supposedly less susceptible to dropouts. But honestly I haven't found much difference in my HC3.
