I know there is an internal setting on the slimline PS2 for progressive scan. So if I turn on that setting, will it automatically upconvert 480i games to 480p?

Also, if you put in a 480p game, do you still have to turn on 480p within the game, or will it automatically output at 480p?

Also does anyone know how long the silver slimline will be available?

That's only for DVD playback. It does not add progressive scan support to games that do not already support it. And on the few games that do support progressive scan you still must enable it each time within the game.

You still have to enable progressive scan within the PS2 game on the PS3 as long as that PS2 game supports it.

The PS3 systems with the Emotion Engine in them run the games exactly like the PS2 down to the resolution. So it won't behave any different than a PS2, so no upscaling of any kind.

The PS3 can deinterlace all 480i content to 480p, games, DVDs or whatever you might load from a USB drive. 480p native PS2 games stilll require enabling the option manually though, otherwise your just getting deinterlaced 480i output rather than straight 480p.

As for the slim PS2, just like the standrd PS2 it will only output games at 480p if the game has the option and it is enabled. Unlike the standard PS2, the slim model does have the option to deinterlace DVDs.

Oh, and the Emotion Engine has nothing to do with any of that.

For the record PS2 games look like crap on the PS3 not matter what, there's a lot more jaggies for some reason.

They fixed the extra jaggies on PS2 games with the 1.5 firmware update.

Good to know, now I just need to snag a PS3 before they take the emotion engine out and the BC goes to crap.

Emotion engine is the PS2 hardware name. When the PS3 was first released, all of them had the Emotion engine built in to provide backward compatibility for PS2 games. With the European launch they removed the emotion engine and are now relying on software emulation to support PS2 games. With all software emulators, its hard if perhaps impossible to get 100% backward compatibility with all games. Often the game will run but there will be some issues here or there.

Also with time I believe Sony will remove the emotion engine out all newly manufactured PS3s world-wide. Its a way for them to cut down on costs.

Personally I don't care for the backward compatibility, however it is nice to have the actual emotion engine. Reason I don't care is because I have a Japanese PS3 and I don't own any JP PS2 games (Can't play US PS2 games on the JP PS3, dvd region lockout). I do own a US PS2 so that works for me.

The Emotion Engine is the PS2 CPU.

- They did add progressive scan for DVDs in some of the later model PS2's before the Slim came out.

Reason I ask is because I know my TV lags with 480i sources. And the only way to get 480i games to 480p or something higher is to use the PS3....or is there some other solution (besides an expensive video scaler)?
