View Full Version : Microsoft to Launch Xbox 360 IPTV DVR
"You heard it from the mouth of Microsoft “Carbon” is official. Now xbox lovers can enjoy episodes of their favorite television shows from the comfort of their wireless 360 controllers. They’ve added television into the menu in your dashboard. Jesse sat down with the brains behind the feature and talk about multi-tasking. Now you can watch Desperate Housewives and Tyra all at the same time. But don’t worry your friends will still think you’re playing Halo. "

Sounds fun, just need to get verizon fios service out to Fullerton, CA.
kneedragger 01-07-07, 10:09 PM  WOW! thats nice, no more tivo subscription.
I think the ability to play a game online while the xbox360 is recording live telivision is fantastic. it will be great to eliminate one set top box from my home entertainment center.
Now, to truly make this great, you need to be able to rent or lease a 360 from your IPTV provider, rather than having to make the purchase yourself. I think a lot of people would be interested in that, and further increase the households that have a 360.

cnickersonjr 01-08-07, 01:55 AM I can kick DishNetwork to the curb once AT&T Uverse is available in my town. Thank you Microsoft.
This is pretty damn cool, I gotta say. I am super psyched that MS is pushing to make the 360 a real media center device. But guys, with the 11 gig HD, does it really replace a Tivo? They better resolve the whole "Can't write to external drives" BS real quick because I am not buying their overpriced crap hard drives.
Although, I can easily imagine buying a new 360 that is more silent, has HDMI output, and a built in 120gig :D

If this option is available to me. Meaning IPTV is available in my community, I'll sell my current 360 and buy the HDMI/120GB 360. In a heart beat!
toneedo 01-08-07, 04:38 AM 120gb is still a bit too small for my hd taste...i hope they will allow external harddrives via usb
120 GB is way way too small to make this an alternative for HD recroding. They need to get it up in the 300GB range.
Andrew67 01-08-07, 06:30 AM Microsoft has been pushing their IPTV service for the last 3 CES conventions. I don't see it taking off because a menu option has been added to the 360. What they need is to have a cable company install the technology for more than a handful of folks. This to me is a big "who cares?" announcement.
FrankJ.Cone 01-08-07, 06:49 AM Caught up on some TV this weekend but we still have 465GB on the MCE. There is no internal drive thats going to cut it for an HD DVR. They are going to have to allow saving to either a USB HDD or PC.
misterjensen 01-08-07, 07:13 AM How does the TV signal get on the XBOX 360? There are not any inputs other than USB...

Ethernet. IPTV is Internet Protocol TV. All data can be broken down into packets, delivered to your 360 and reassembled as its original state.

Via the ethernet connection. :-)
IPTV = Internet Protocol TV = TV streaming via internet. No D/Ls; it just connects to your phone company's (if available) TV servers and streams the content. Recording can be local or *remote*.
Remote recording means local HD size is irrelevant.
Lots of nifty features are doable (like retroactive "recording" of a week old show) *if* the broadcasters and the server provider choose o enable the features.
MS technology provides the means; now to see the providers doing their part.

Seems strange to point that out. Downloadable shows are becoming popular and 360 has done the best job of it so far. So by the end of the year when this launches should we be surprised that trends are starting to change?
RAVEN56706 01-08-07, 08:18 AM darn... wish it would work with directv.....
darn... wish it would work with directv.....
There is an answer for DirecTV. Stay Tuned to CES...We hope to hear a date!
RAVEN56706 01-08-07, 08:56 AM oh boy... what do you know that we dont?
A CableCard built-in would reach more audiences. Not many area has IPTV service. Hmm it's only around Houston area, isn't it?
I MS can execute this properly and market it properly, it will most likely spell doom for the PS3. I was on the fence for the PS3, still am, but starting to lean towards not getting one.

Sony wants to do the exact same thing. But it won't spell doom for either side if the other gets it right. Only a lack of games will. And it looks like the 360 is winning that war currently.
Us media center types are the niche market really.
longhorns 01-08-07, 10:31 PM so how much does iptv cost?

Wouldn't that be unrealistic? Wouldn't IPTV take up a giant chunk of bandwidth? If it's a bandwidth hog I can't see this replacing anything.

He might be talking about the card that attaches to your PC and streams TV to your 360. You can supposedly connect your Directv cable to that and stream the stuff to your 360.

You're thinking of WonkaVision :p

William Mapstone 01-09-07, 09:29 PM What larger HDD options will be available for 2007? Any announcements at CES?
Thansk.
ogbuehi 01-09-07, 10:06 PM Wow, people will soon forget that the 360 is a HD gaming console.
