View Full Version : Watch Email for Netflix HD DVD Survey
cluelesspa 01-07-07, 11:32 PM Watch your Email for a survey from Netflix. (for those who are Netflix members and selected HD DVD or Blue Ray as a format).
They sent a link to a survey on High Def DVDs and would I buy an HD DVD Player again. what type of player ect.
Definitely fill it out. Looks like Netflix is considering dropping HD DVD?? or Blue Ray DVDs?
atagert 01-07-07, 11:36 PM I got one too, maybe they are intersted in pittsburgh.
Customgamer1 01-07-07, 11:40 PM I would like to know the numbers they have. Do you think HD-DVD or Blu-Ray is getting shipped out more? From the state of HD-DVD's from netflix I would have to say HD-DVD's because I was reading in the Blu-ray forum and they said they never have scratches on them...

Why would you think that? I got the e-mail and filled out the survey (and no I am not in Pittsburg). They are probably just collecting survey data to help them determine what and how much to purchase for rental in '07. I doubt they will be dropping either format any time soon.
Net Flix's primary vested interest is in keeping studio-created hard copy DVDs (of any kind) successful and in circulation - whether that is regular DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-ray. The logistics issue of (for example) 2 HD formats is a comparatively minor at this point
Net Flix's ultimate nightmare is the day Hollywood studios and owners of the movie copyrights are able to figure out a (pirate risk free) way (e.g via HDMI) to allow consumers to offload movies at home - and in effect to manufacter their own discs at home after paying the proper tolls to the studios etc - thus bypassing the need for the U.S. Mail and NetFlix
So far, prospects look good for Net Flix in the near term as the pirating issues as so huge - it will take years to get a handle on them
I received the email, also. Live in the DC area.
cluelesspa 01-08-07, 10:19 AM Well just keep a look out and PUSH HD DVD (pick 5 out of 5 for HD DVD) just to make sure they keep supporting us :)
DaveinTucson 01-08-07, 10:20 AM I've been a Netflix member for over a year and rent HD DVD only for High Def DVD's. I haven't received the email survey. I guess the logical assumption then is that they don't care about Tucson? :p
I think that they are just blown away by how many people have both and they are overwhelmed and can not keep up. A lot of my HD-DVDs and Blu-rays have a wait for them because they can not keep up with demand.
AUWingsFan 01-08-07, 10:44 AM I took the survey and hope that they aren't thinking of dropping either format, because they are the only way I can rent high-def material. I hope it is as has been mentioned previously in this thread that they are surprised at how popular both formats are!! I own an RCA HD-DVD player and PS3, and once I can afford it I'll be getting the 360 add-on....I love having HD material and like being able to try before I buy being on a limited budget, so hopefully Netflix will continue to have both formats and have so many titles of each!
NoThru22 01-08-07, 10:54 AM Considering certain HD-DVD titles are very difficult to obtain from them, I don't think they're considering dropping anything.
I have about had it with Netflix! I have had Mission Impossible 3 in my queue for almost a month now. How can one HD DVD be that much in demand?
bone_fide 01-08-07, 08:41 PM I had MI 3 HD in my que for a month at Netflix and most of the time it showed as available"now" but they never sent it to me. I decided to join Blockbuster and they sent it right away, however it was scratched and wouldn't play through. I reported the problem online to them and they sent another copy the next day(before I returned the scratched one) The second one played perfectly. Now I have a membership at both, but I most likely will cancel Netflix since with the Blockbuster I'm able to return to local stores if I choose and their superior customer service I recieved so far.
WirelessGuru 01-08-07, 08:43 PM Well, if Netflix drops HD-DVD then I will be dropping them. Actually, I might drop them anyway considering they hardly ever fulfill my HD-DVD requests.

That was the main reason I dropped them. I had Superman Returns and Miami Vice as top two in my queue for 2 weeks (both were available status), yet they were
bypassed and the 3rd and 4th selections sent.
There is no excuse for this, unless they are running business out of their
basement or garage! Ever heard of forecasting, Netflix ?!? They had no clue
in anticipating increased demand from HD-DVD add-on drives or PS3 ???
BoSoxMole 01-08-07, 08:55 PM I was having a problem with my Netflix account, so I called them and everything got fixed.
I also asked him about BR/HD and how well they do. He said ever since HD and BR came out, I was the first person EVER to ask him about it. There isn't really a demand for them, which is why they don't have that many.
John Clark 01-09-07, 12:25 AM I have both a Toshiba HD-XA1 and a PS3 so I can cover both formats. I can't seem to find any way to set up my Netflix account for both. I have had HD DVD as my preferred option but now that I've also gotten the PS3, I had expected to be able to take advantage of renting BD's for movies that are only available in that format.
Has anyone found a way to make this work?

There must be some demand. The ones I rent have some scatches on them. And new releases can be hard to get.
As far as Netflix skipping your first choices, I usually only put a few discs in my queue. It forces them to ship what I want or at least provide an answer why they haven't.

Yes. You tell them you have both available and when they are in your queue, you can click on the format and a drop down menu pops up that allows you to choose between the 3 formats.

Thanks NoThru, I was going nuts trying to find how to do that.
