I have done a search on more than just this site with no luck
Okay, setting up the PS3 wirelessly through Motorola SBG900 wireless SURFboard gateway. It is CableOne cable internet.
I can get on the internet and surf the web just fine. But, I CAN NOT log onto playstation network or playstation store. It let me go through the whole process of making a username and password. Everytime I try and log on, it says that the "playstation network timed out" I intentionally tried the wrong password and it instantly says that there is an incorrect username and/or password, just to make sure I had the right username and password when I am logging on. I want to download the demos and games and whatever else.
I have no security feature set up. When I pull up the "settings and connections status list" screen on the PS3 everything looks good. There is a word or number figure for everything listed
Internet Connection Enabled
connection method wireless
Signal strength 95%
SSID the name I made up when I set up the internet connection
BSSID "long number"
Channel 1
Security none
Address settings Automatic
IP Address "long number"
Subnet mask "long number"
Default router "long number"
Primary DNS "long number"
Secondary DNS "long number"
MAC address "long number"
MTU Automatic
Proxy Server Do Not Use
UPnP Not available
NAT Type Failed
I don't know what's going on and I surely don't know what most of the above means. Please shed some light on what's going on here, I would really appreciate it. Also, can anyone get on the EA server? while playing Need For Speed Carbon, it will never log on to their server......I don't know
thanks in advance for the input
AmigaDude 01-08-07, 10:04 AM First, the settings you posted look good so the problem is probably with your SURFboard. If I remember correctly, it has MAC address filtering, as well as WEP, so I'd suggest looking at these settings in the SURFboard. The WEP setting MUST match with the PS3's, and the WEP security either must be OFF, or the PS3 set to match.
First off, you might want to resett the modem and try again in case of a temporary problem.
Can you surf the net with the PS3? If you can and still keep getting timed out, then try to disable SSID broadcast on your router. Turning off SSID broadcast appears to solve flaky connection for a lot of people, including myself.
I can surf the net and how do I turn off SSID?
the first thing that I noticed on your setup is: NAT Type Failed
This should not be there. I'm not near my PS3 now and I don't remember what mine said. But it did *not* say failed.
Seeing that you can surf the web you are connecting with the Surfboard. However, if I had to guess off the top of my head what is wrong. I would have to say that some port isn't getting opened.
Taking a second look at your setup I see that UPNP is not available. And so the PS3 cannot open the port that it needs to open.
Have a look at your manual for the Surfboard and see if you can enable UPNP. That should solve your issue.
I found your manual online. Seems that your router doesn't support Upnp. So your only other choices now is to either:
1) find out what ports the PS3 uses and manually enter them
2) give your PS3 a static IP and setup DMZ on your router to point to the IP that you gave the PS3.
Andreo........Thank you for your input, how do I assign a static IP and set up DMZ? I'm sorry, but I have no clue. I follow directions well so if you care to explain. You can PM me if you want. Thanks
For static IPs:
check you router settings. Router should be in "Bridged" mode so that all the devices have own static "lan" IPs like 192.168.0.1 ->192.168.0.255. Router will have one LAN IP(static) and one global IP(one its get from service provider). Now you must manualy give one address of 192.168.0.1 ->192.168.0.255 for your ps3. Then give correct subnetmask (default 255.255.255.0) and gateaway, routers lan ip (default 192.168.0.254). You can also put routers lan ip as default dns if needed.
DMZ or port forwarding is tool in your router settings(see manual) to you can assign outside ports to spesific IP. I have only tested manual portforwarding (in my telewell its called "virtual server") so im not sure how dmz works?
Sorry, I forgot to post the link to your routers user manual.
Here it it: http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/support/default.asp?supportSection=CableModems
It's a PDF file. It has a section on setting up Port forwarding / triggering and a section on setting up DMZ. It's pretty straight forward.
As for giving your PS3 a static IP. There are two ways. You can tell the router to always give your PS3 the same IP address (you use the MAC address to do this) or you can setup the IP on your PS3.
To set it up on the PS3 you will go through the network setup again. Everything that you have for setting now will pretty much remain the same, except you will manually put that information in when the PS3 ask for it. So if right now your PS3 says the DNS for your network is 208.67.222.222 that is what you will put in when you manually configure the network for the PS3.
Then on the router side you would tell the router that the DMZ should point to the IP address that you gave the PS3. This will open all the ports up to the PS3. Since there are no network security threats to the PS3 at this time it should be fairly safe.
Thank you guys, when I get a chance, I'll do all that. this forum is great!

Had the same router, same problem. Fixed it by manually giving the PS3 a static IP (done through the PS3 by selecting manual instead of automatic addressing). Then I forwarded ports 10070-10080 through the router and pointed it toward to the IP I gave the PS3. Voila!
