View Full Version : First Blood
Hi there,
Has anyone reviewed the French release of First Blood? I just ordered it from xploited and wanted to know what quality it was.
I also ordered Total Recall at the same time, but it is backordered.
Thanks
DM2006RI 01-08-07, 09:50 AM There are a lot of complaints about the transfer being dark, muddy, etc.
IMO after spending time comparing this with the old Artisan DVD (which looks like it originated from the same print), it's a nice upgrade with enhanced details and such.
Could be that the movie ALWAYS looked this dark (reflecting the Pacific Northwest after all) so I'm not convinced like I was that this is a "bad" transfer.
RAMBO II and III are much more brightly-lit action films with different locales so those transfers seem more "eye popping" by comparison, but I'm happy with my FIRST BLOOD purchase, even if it doesn't make you go "wow".
kevink109 01-08-07, 11:19 AM I found First Blood to be a huge improvement over the DVD release.
It starts a little soft but overall I liked it-
Total Recal is even better- a marked improvement over the DVD offerings....
Alan Gouger 01-08-07, 12:03 PM I think it depends on what your watching it on. At 8 feet wide it was soft on my system due to the use of NR but as stated by many who also own the dvd it still shows improvement over the NTSC version.
I ordered Total Recall a month ago and its still back ordered. I cant wait for this one. Glad to hear it looks good:)
kevink109 01-08-07, 12:16 PM Yes the set-up does matter-
Currently I am limited to a 37" Sharp 1080p display- so although I like my display I have a lot less real estate to show flaws in any transfer
I would not call either First blood or Total recall reference by any stretch- but definately a noticable upgrade compared to DVD
I have been slowly trying to revamp my family room and calibrate the SO on upcoming changes- I would like to see the next gen 1080p 50" plasma from Pioneer w/ HDMI1.3 shown this week at CES.... I can only hope for a mid 2007 release :)
Projector/Theater once the kiddies vacate the "bonus" room :(
The DVHS version of First Blood was also sub-reference. I find the HD DVD to be better than the DVHS version and much better than the DVD.

I will be viewing this on a 106" diagonal, but it is only outputted through a Z4 :( Bigger screen, but an entry-level HD projector. Having said that, many HD movies look fabulous with my setup (until I of course see or hear about some of the monster systems on AVS!).
The email message I received regarding the back order for Total Recall stated that they expected to receive more stock within the next week. Is that the same message you had received as well?

It has been a month and I have received no update. I better go back and make sure I am still on the preorder list

That can be a blessing. I recently went to a smaller screen size in my Theater Room knowing everything will look better and it did.
Unfortunately for me I built the room around a larger screen and the smaller screen did not look right so I found myself returning to the 8 footer. I do love the bigger screen but as you mention it does not come without a price. All flaws are magnified :(

Huge Rambo fan here.
I thought it looked better than the DVD for sure.
119" screen and DLP FP.
Worth the price IMO.
Parts 2 and 3 look even better.
AlterBridge86 01-08-07, 09:01 PM hey guys - i'm lookin to get the French release of the Rambo movies although I have one question that I haven't seem to been able to find an answer too - is the writing on the box in French or English? I know it has English 5.1 audio tracks and all - just wondering about the box writing. Thanks!

Packaging is in French...if it bothers you these are coming out in Australia in the next month or two, so THAT ought to be English ;) (though they'll probably cost more than buying the Xploited French imports by a decent sum).

Yes but the beautiful part is telling your spouse you ordered some of those fancy french films- and for one split second she believes you- but then alas- the truth is revealed :)
Alan- doesn't it always work out that way, I want a larger display you want a smaller display- the grass is always greener...
I purchased them to. Well not First Blood since I have the DTHEATER version. Now I have all of them in HD! Now I need to plan a RAMBO night! :)
