I just did a search and there is a lot written about the 360 Wireless Adapter but I could not find anything about the situation described below.

Curious to know if anyone has tried to stream HD content (or any video content) from a PC to a TV via the 360 using the wireless approach below:

PC -> wireless router -> Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter.

I have a notebook with MCE and it has a wireless card. I have a Linksys wireless router and I am considering the 360 wireless adapter.

I cannot find the link right now on the MS website, but I remember reading that the preferred method is hardline to the router and the above configuration (I think it is called “double dipping” or something like that) is not recommended. Even though it is not recommended, I am curious to know if anyone has tried it. If so, how are the results?

If it matters the notebook has an “excellent” signal with the router and the router is less then a foot from the 360.

Sorry for the ignorance, but can I assume there is no way to circumvent the router? For example, is there a wireless solution so I can connect direct; pc -> 360?

Thanks.

It'll work fine so long as your MCE's connection to the wireless router and then the wireless router's connection to your Xbox 360 wireless adapter is good. Make sure there are as few obstructions like walls between each device. As long as your connection is good things will stream perfectly fine. The preferred method is of course to use a wired network, but that is just inconvenient for a lot of us.

Computer to wireless to router to wireless to 360 is asking for trouble. Your throughput will be cut drastically since each wireless device requires a portion of the available 54Mbps (for 802.11g). And most 802.11g devices don't go faster than 20mbps.

Dude just go to frys and get the wirless n router and adapter for your laptop for less then 120.00 and your problem is solved. Wireless G isn't fast enough! Be sure and connect the router directly to the 360.

FYI N routers are rated @ 300 mb per second.

I had this exact set up... Laptop with wirless.... Xbox connected to wireless bridge...to Linksys router. Problem was it was all 802.11b. I couldn't even get video to work just pics. I upgraded my bridge and router to G, Laptop already had it, and every seemed to get better. I havent' tried much HD but at least now i can do video. But the tool does say that it doesn't meet HD specs.

If the router is less than a foot from the 360 why cant you use a cable to go between them. then use all of the wireless bandwidth for the laptop. if its only a foot it seems so unnecessary to use wireless? Am i missing something?

I've got two laptops setup on my wireless network as well as my 360 and I've never had a problem streaming videos or music from my PCs.

Thanks everyone for the response.

Yikes, maybe I am missing something? I feel like a dumbass. :D

I already have the 360 connected to the router via cat5. I wrongly assumed the only way to "get into" the 360 was via USB or the wireless adapter. It didn't occur to me that I could go wireless from the pc to the router then go wired to 360. I'll give it a try when I get home tonight. Thanks. :)

This is how I connect my 360. I routinely stream HD wmv-hd's. The only time I ever had a stutter was when one of my neighbors changed his router to be on the same wireless channel. I just changed my channel and not one problem since. Good luck!

:) no worries.

I set mine up just like that. xbox <-cat5 cable-> Router <- wifi -> 2 laptop computers. and it works great.

I'm happy to report that the setup described above worked perfectly. It's so nice to finally hear music through my stereo system and viewing pics on my HDTV. I haven't tried streaming movies yet but I assume I will get similar results.

Also, just an FYI, you do not need to download the Zune software. The 360 wizard instructs you to long onto xbox.com/pcsetup and you are prompted to download the Zune software. I did and it worked just fine.

However, it turns out that the Windows Media Player 11 works fine too (which I already had). I have nothing against Zune software, I just prefer the cleaner interface of WMP11.

I guess I'll find out someday that streaming real HDTV isn't going to work under 802.11G, but for now a Buffalo Tech WHR-G54S works just fine streaming MP3s and SD video to a B.T. WLI-TX4-G54HP connected to the 360...
