View Full Version : Sony, Panny, Oppo
andy sullivan 01-08-07, 12:32 PM Over the last 45 days I have been trying out the Sony70, the Panny52 and found them to be pretty comparable. Last night I hooked up the Oppo970 to the same 73" Mitsubishi 732 series. The PQ from the Oppo simply was stunning. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
970+DLP= match made in heaven :D
Paul Bigelow 01-09-07, 02:23 AM The 970HD is an excellent player and makes the most of the fine MediaTek chip. Many of us on this forum in conjunction with Oppo Digital worked very hard to make it that way. Glad you like it.

If I buy the Oppo 970 right now, will I need to add new firmware or anything to "get the most of it"?
Paul Bigelow 01-09-07, 01:34 PM The players are subject to improvement as events dictate. There is a beta testfix available at the Oppo Digital HD970 support website to address a couple of SACD playback issues.

How big of an improvement did you see in PQ in the Oppo from the Sony and Panny unit? I ask because I have the 65732 and just took back a Sony ns75h because I was extremely dissapointed in the PQ, and now in the market for a new dvd player for my huge dvd library.
Asshandler 01-10-07, 12:35 PM I'd buy an Oppo if not for two things...
1. I live in Kelowna, BC Canada and see now way to purchase one locally.
2. I've read that the DCDi by Faroudja doesn't work well on my Samsung 42" plasma, which could be why I hate my current Sammy DVD player.

The 970 does not use Faroudja and there should be no risk of enhanced macroblocking.
Only those near Mountain View get to buy locally. There is one Canadian reseller listed here:
http://www.oppodigital.com/wheretobuy.html. Oppo will also ship internationally.

Asshandler 01-10-07, 02:46 PM Thank you very much. Looks like I don't have any excuse to not own one then. :p
Jack Gilvey 01-10-07, 03:15 PM The PQ from the Oppo simply was stunning. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
Even after viewing HD DVD for a week or so previous, I was quite impressed when I hooked up my 970 to my AE900 @ 720p. Makes my 971 seem a bit soft. I only purchased it for audio, but it's now my SD player of choice.
The SACD/DVD-A audio (via analog 5.1 currently) is as good as the video, even compared to my Denon 2900. Amazing value.
Asshandler 01-10-07, 04:57 PM Ordered the 970, thanks guys.
andy sullivan 01-11-07, 10:12 AM neemo6. We were also underwhelmed with performance of the Sony as well as the Panny. I didn't expect much from the 970 but was I ever wrong. We first watched an older DVD, "Timechanger" , and it just jumped off the screen. I tried several more movies to see if the PQ would be as impressive. It was. You will love the 970 with you new Mits.
