View Full Version : 360 wireless adapter options
gab2409 01-08-07, 01:26 PM (the search has been down for me for over an hour, so sorry if this has been covered.)
I want to get an adapter, but $100 seems a little steep for me. will any third party adapter work, as long as it's usb compatible? I saw references to the linksys wireless game adapter, but it appears to be $100 as well(on amazon). thoughts? thanks.
SixkillerNYC 01-08-07, 01:28 PM Any third party wireless bridge will work.
I went through this a few weeks ago. You can use almost any 3rd party ethernet bridge. Note I said ethernet, not usb. The only USB adapter that works with the 360 one is the 1st party adapter (there may be USB "bridges" out there, but I'm not familiar with any.) An ethernet bridge will plug into the RJ-45 port on the back of the xbox and need a power cable as well, but it works fine.
Also, if you run WPA on your wireless network, be sure the adapter you buy supports it, not all gaming adapters/bridges do. For example the original Xbox wireless adapter does not (I learned that the hard way.) If your wireless is open, or running WEP then it won't matter.
gab2409 01-11-07, 01:35 PM yeah, I got tired of thinking about it, so I went ahead and got the msoft adapter. man, I'm already over $600 in to this thing.

Ah, but it does, just not officially. You can dump the Microsoft firmware and you'll have WPA support (I found out the hard way too). It can't configure through the Xbox dashboard anymore, just a web interface, but how often do you really need to change the settings? ;-)
twobrain 01-11-07, 06:17 PM the buffalo router/bridges flashed with dd wrt are suppose to be good
jhferry 01-12-07, 11:54 AM I have the Buffalo bridge and Router without the flash and they are good as long as you have a good signal.
Well I own a BUFFALO WLI-TX4-G54HP and I love it.

I own the same one and love it too. All you have to do is plug it into your computer and set it up to pick up your wireless network and your done. Its a pain in the ass to setup, but once its done you don't have any problems. I used to use a linksis router as a AP and I always had to reset it because it would get retarded. With the buffalo I havent had to mess with it once.
jhferry 01-13-07, 11:53 PM Thats the one I have as well.

It should work. If you broadcast a wireless signal the wireless bridge should pick up the signal.

thanks for the resonse. I am just going to get the ms one since I have a $40 best buy gift card to use. Is the ms wireless bridge the best one for $100 or under?
I'm looking for some wireless adapters for my brother's 360. I've been reading some older posts and a lot of them recommend the buffalo adapters, but after looking at their website, it looks like they might have run into some legal issues or something. A lot of the older suggestions are close to, if not higher than the official 360 adapter :(
I was hoping to find a wireless adapter for his 360 for roughly $50. If anyone has purchased such a thing recently, and has success, would you mind telling me what you purchased and where? The 360 adapter is like $75 on amazon, but I'm still miffed at them for charging so much for wireless... Any suggestions would be appreciated.
jhoff80 05-19-08, 10:06 PM I've got two of the Linksys WRT54GS routers flashed with DD-WRT. The first is used as a standard router and the second is set up in client bridge mode, which goes to a Gigabit switch. The switch connects directly to my Server, HTPC, and 360.
It works perfectly this way, no additional lag when playing online or anything like that. I would say that's the best route, to just get any DD-WRT compatible router and flash it. The newest WRT54GS versions might not support it though, I haven't checked in a while, so you'd have to look into that yourself. www.dd-wrt.com
bryansj 05-20-08, 07:35 AM I would skip the 360 wireless adapter and get a bridge even if it cost more (which it shouldn't). Once you get a bridge you can connect other devices to it where if you have the 360 adapter you have no way to expand without another purchase.
At this point I have my 360, PS3, HD-DVD player, and DirecTV HD-DVR all connected to my bridge. I have a setup similar to jhoff80's where I use two routers flashed with dd-wrt firmware and one configured as a bridge. If you don't want to flash your router, just buy a wireless bridge.

I was pretty much thinking the same thing when I bought the MS one as well. I didn't really want to spend $100 for it when there were probably cheaper options out there. But I don't regret the purchase at all...the thing has worked flawlessly for me. I've never experienced lag, had any dropouts, etc. So spending that $100 for something that has worked great is a solid deal to me.
I got the MS one as well. Didn't know anything about wireless bridges and was too lazy to learn, so I opted for the easy way out. Works great too. I haven't had any issues whatsoever. People seem to kill me online just as easy as they did when I was wired, so it must work fine.
