View Full Version : Where in-line to place HDMI extender/repeater?

In a few weeks I'll be moving into a new house. It will have a 3rd floor bonus room that will be a dedicated home-theater. I've pre-run a 50ft HDMI cable in-wall to my projector mount location. I'll pull the cable directly out of the ceiling and connect it to the projector, a Panasonic AE700u. I have an HDMI wall-plate at the origin end. I'll be connecting from a Pioneer Elite 82TXs HDMI switching/repeating receiver to the wall-plate. I'll be connecting a Toshiba HD-A1 and Motorola 6412 to the receiver via HDMI.

This is a pretty long run for HDMI, 50ft + 3ft from receiver-to-wall plate. I've purchased all my cables, wall-plate, and an HDMI extender from Monoprice. Now my question is where in-line should I put the HDMI extender? My gut says either between the wall-plate and the 50ft cable (inside the wall) or between the 50ft cable and the projector (in wall).

Between the wall-plate and wall then gives a 50ft straight-shot to the projector. Between the 50ft cable and the projector boostes the signal right before it goes into the projector. Both seem to make sense, which will work best?

Thanks!

When I bought an HDMI repeater, the instructions were very specific that the order had to be as follows:

Source > Long cable > repeater > shorter cable > display

It was very specific that the cable that comes between the repeater and the display had to be shorter than the cable between the source and the repeater.

Ultimately, the repeater didn't work for me anyway (I suspect that I damaged the long HDMI cable during construction).

I'm not sure how it would work to use a repeater in addition to a switching received AND an HDMI wall plate. I'll be amazed if the signal successfully makes it through three different connections to the projector, but that's more of a statement on HDMI's twitchy nature than anything else.

In my setup, I have two different sources going into my Pioneer Elite HDMI switching receiver, then I have a 50-ft HDMI cable going directly from the receiver to my projector with no other wallplates or repeaters in the way (I ran a new long HDMI cable after the first one didn't work). I'd suggest trying the same setup, and if you can pass the signal without any issues, then there isn't a need for a repeater. If you get a hooded wallplate at the source end, you can pass the HDMI cable through without another unnecessary connection, and still have a decorative termination (you can get an idea of what I mean by a "hooded" wallplate if you look at the pictures of the back of my equip rack in my signature...it's essentially just a pass-through wallplate that looks better than a decora hole in the wall).

Hopefully this helps. Anything you can do to eliminate unnecessary connections would be preferred. Unlike analog connections, which can degrade with additional connections, making too many connections with digital cables just increases the likelihood that the signal won't make it through at all.
