View Full Version : You all buying Blu-rays with your PS3?

We know that Sony is betting the farm on their new blu-ray tech. Hence the high cost of the Ps3. So how many of you Ps3 owners gave in and picked up a couple along with your unit?

I admit that I got some. Superman Returns, X-Men 3 and Crash.

How about you?

Just ordered my first 3 yesterday.

Gave in? They are the main reason I wanted a PS3 at launch. I could have waited till GT5 if I didn't need a Blu-Ray player. I have about 8 titles now. My whole DVD collection is about 50 titles, so I'm pretty selective about what I buy.

Nothing interests me besides X-Men. I'll admit that I would love Cars to come out on Blu-ray.

Sure, I think it's safe to say most of us are picking up a movie or two (or 13 now). Don't believe the nay-sayers over in the HD-DVD forums.:(

Maybe I should have asked:

How many of you DIDN'T get a PS3 for the blu-ray player, but gave in and purchased a couple?

I didn't care for the player, but picked up a couple out of curiosity. I'm still debating if I see a difference or not...but that is for another forum.

Actually... I bought my first BD before I even got the PS3... Nacho Libre is my first title that I purchased and I'll be purchasing any decent new blue ray movies that come out; see no sense in buying a bd if I already have the regular dvd.

MI3 and Kingdom of Heaven. Although when my local Hollywood video gets BD in I will be renting and only buying top titles that have the best PQ. Hopefully all the action/adventure ones. :D

Picked up Corpse Bride last night. Goofy movie but stunning PQ.

I also picked up The Fifth Element before I found out that it was a sub-par BD transfer. I have yet to watch that one.

I am slowly, but surely! Its not easy converting from a 700+ DVD collection Blu Ray due to financial reasons ;)

However, I do have a few :)
BlackHawkDown
NachoLibre
LakeHouse
Click
BehindEnemyLines
X3
Talladega
Fantastic4
WorldTradeCenter

I plan to convert my whole library, must haves I should SAY! Its the only way to make this TV shine... I am glad that SONY has included the drive in PS3. My PS3 sure is an all in one in my house hold.

Only have 1 for my ps3 so far Ice Age: The Meltdown and PQ is amazing! Funny movie too. I would like to buy a lot more. Can't wait for AVP and Casino Royale. I am really dissapointed that they screwed up The Fifth Element and House of Flying Daggers though. I will probably average one every other month for blue ray and one every other month for my hd dvd player.

I planned on buying blu ray movies just the fact it can. But I'm more picky in buying what I know I would love to watch more than once. Anything else would be dvd.

Only BR movies I have are - black hawk down and kung fu hustle.

TheMoose
01-08-07, 11:56 PM
I've picked up 15 BD movies so far.
I've gotten a few I already had on DVD because the PQ was susposed to be exelent but I'll probably pick up titles I don't already have for the most part.

I have 400+ DVD's & I'm not going to replace all of them so they better start "crank"ing out some new releases!! :D

I've been ordering thru Amazon for the most part since they have lower prices & a better selection but I'll head to BB tomorrow for crank since I just got a bunch of reward point coupons.

You're in luck. Guess what was just announced recently!

I only have a couple so far, but I'm always looking for more.
I have Kingdom of Heaven, Talledega Nights, and Underworld Evolution so far.
My next purchases will probably be Crank, Silent Hill (if I could find it), and Alien vs Predator.

AvP = Not a great movie, but it's my first chance to see Aliens and Predators in High Def. I just can't pass it up.

I haven't bought any. I pretty much just buy music on DVD. I have less than a dozen movies on DVDs. I don't see jambands and other bands releasing stuff on HD discs for a long time.

MSmith83
01-09-07, 12:35 AM
The PS3 compelled me to buy 18 Blu-Ray discs. I only buy exclusives for the BD format, so the choices for good movies have been a bit thin. In contrast, I have 56 HD DVDs. :D

With regards to BD audio/video quality, my favorites thus far are Kung Fu Hustle and Black Hawk Down.

I can't wait to get Casino Royale and Reservoir Dogs.

Monty22001

Renting and buying them at a good rate. 2007 has a crazy good release schedule, so I'm gonna load up with BD's for my PS3.

01-09-07, 01:05 AM
I wish i could buy Blu-Ray movies, I went to buy some BR movies, but realized I owned them all on DVD (700 and counting... :D ) But with 4 other DVD players in the house all on non-HD displays, and 1 non HDCP compliant HD projector, it makes no real sense to spend the extra $$$ on it. So far its only the freebie Talladega Nights for now..... I suppose i should start renting again and maybe not buying as much, oh the dilemma

I bought the PS3 primarily for Blu-Ray (don't have game 1 yet), but I haven't bought any BD movies yet (only have Talladega Nights which was free). I have rented 3 Blu-Ray movies from Netflix so far: Ant Bully, World Trade Center, The Devil Wears Prada. All of them looked fantastic at 1080i on my 720p front projector. I'm certainly convinced of the superiority of high def DVDs.

The main reason I haven't bought more is that I already have the ones that interest me on DVD and I can't yet bring myself to buy a movie again that I just bought. Until then Netflix is great.

I'll likely get Casino Royale as my first official Blu-Ray buy in the spring unless I can't bear not having XMen 3 and Superman in HD. Besides, DVD output on my HTPC in progressive is still pretty nice quality. It's no Blu-Ray as I can certainly tell, but non-techie family members don't notice a huge difference.

I bought a PS3 mainly as a Blu-ray player. I loved the idea of Sony subsidizing my movie watching hobby. :) I only have one movie (KoH) so far but will buy more. I'll first rent them (I have Netflix) to check them out though, so it's going to take time.

However, now that I have a game machine I started getting intererested in games. I already bought 2 games and I've had the PS3 for only a week. ;)

Sony Trojan Horsed me. I spent more money on games than movies!

I purchased the PS3 before Xmas mainly for bluray playback but have not purchased any movies as of yet (no games yet either other than the Tekken 5 download but I have rented several PS3 games) . My first BD (other than the Talladega freebie) will probably be Underworld Evolution since my wife and I are Kate B. fans ;) . I have seen bits of Corpse Bride on an 11' wide screen and it is stunning but I prefer the Pixar style animation so I am eager for The Incredibles and Toy Story (Cars will be amazing PQ no doubt) . I have only purchased about 10 HD DVD's since it launched and I am having a hard time spending $30+ for any single movie ( at local retailers like WalMart and Target it seems like all the BD titles that I want are at least $30 while most of the HD titles that I want are only $20 ) . I had Netflix but canceled it during a dry spell with almost no HD DVD's that I wanted to see but now I can say that it would be a good time to sign up again (especially having both HD DVD and BluRay at home) .

I own six titles so far.

Talladega Nights <---pretty funny, it has it's moments
Corpse Bride <---I love the contrast between the living and dead worlds
Italian Job <---Good movie but nothing special
Full Metal Jacket <---A Classic and beautiful ending when the sun is setting purple w/ bldgs on fire; visually appealing.
MI:3 <---Pretty good action flick
The Unforgiven <---Great cinematography and sound. Rain storms etc...

huh... unless something has recently changed at the local Target... the BD's they had here were $19.99 (that's where I got Nacho Libre and HDDVD was the same exact price I'll have to go by again to verify but I've never seen a BD more than $30; that would definately suck).

Edit: Nevermind... I see what you mean. My next title is going to be MI3 and I did a search at walmart.com and it looks like blue ray is a *little* more but for $28bux I'll take it...

I bought two with the buy.com deal. No real expectations to buy any more (Nor any HD DVD). I have time to watch a movie or two a week and Netflix delivers a movie or two a week for $12 a month.

It's the main reason why I bought my PS3 (plus it only cost me $89 after gift cards!). I do game on it, but it's mostly used for movies. I've bought a couple of titles, but I do a lot of renting from Netflix. Based on all the release announcements in the past couple of days, I'll be purchasing quite a few titles this year.

The Blu-Ray feature on the PS3 put me over the edge when it came to deciding on a new game console. The kiddies love the gaming, I love the Blu-Ray. Considering they're both in the PS3, at $600 its actually a pretty good deal !!

01-09-07, 08:24 AM
I'm not a gamer at all, so count me among the deranged, misguided few that bought a PS3 strictly for it's Blu-ray playing capability. I've had my PS3 since release day in Japan (November 11), and I currently have 15 discs in my collection. Four other friends of mine also bought the PS3 for the same reason and we've been swapping discs to decide which ones are worth buying. I'm watching my PS3 on my somewhat outmoded Sanyo Z2, but this is just until my wife and I decide which 1080p front projector we want to replace it with. Right now we're leaning toward either the Mitsubishi or Epson models.

So far I've only got 5 Blu Ray movies for my PS3, but I'm certainly hoping to pick up more soon.

I don't think I'll ever buy or rent a game. Gt and demos can be fun though.

I'm hoping to be able to transfer some of my own HD files I make with my capture card via the network if ps3 ever supports file sizes larger then 4Gb.

I bought 3. I most likely won't be buying many more. If interested I may rent. I have the A2, and upconverting SD DVD is so nice I may just continue along SD DVD path which is cheaper and rent or buy those rare must have the slightly better HD version.

I got the PS3 for games. A BRD player backup should Sony win the format war. But I won't be investing into either format heavily until a winner is realized and mainstream.

Has anyone mentioned the BluRay disc that only works on the PS3 right now? Descent, which just came out, doesn't play on stand alone BD players. There's some java used for some PIP stuff which isn't supported by the others.

Just thought that was interesting.

I've only bought 3 used BD titles from Game Spot. I prefer HD-DVD to Blu-Ray at this point. I'm a casual gamer, so adding blu-ray to my Netflix account was a no brainer. Honestly I was thinking of returning the PS3 until Gran Turismo HD came out, I've never seen anything graphically on any console that compares to it. I love my Xbox 360 too.
I don't see myself buying another Blu-Ray until the prestige comes out. Then Casino Royale, Both Pirate of the Carr films.

I picked up a PS3 a couple weeks ago for Blu Ray playback use only. I bouught an HD-A1 back last April when they launched, but have held off on Blu Ray because of the higher player prices. I bought the 20 gig PS3 at Target and now have over 10 Blu Ray movies to go along with almost 90 HD DVDs. Looking at the Blu Ray release list for the next few months I think that my Blu Ray collection will grow fast!

"Sony has shipped 1 million PS3 as of December 31, 2006.
Survey from 10k respondents, indicate that they plan to purchase Blu-ray movies to view on their PS3. 75% of the respondents plan to use their PS3 as a primary device for watching movies. 80% of 1 million equals an installed base of 800,000. "
"Mike Dunn with 20th Century fox takes the stage.
On Dec 20th Blu-ray media sales outpaced HD DVD disc sales. Fox will continue to be aggressive with BDJ. 7-10 titles per month, most will be 50GB."

What I do like most is BDJ (blu-ray's menu and interactive addon feature) support is going forward.

I'm not saying this as a diss, but really what other buying options do PS3 owners have right now, especially if you're also a 360 owner. You've got RFOM,every other decent game is on 360.Of course if you don't have a 360,that's different.

What would make me buy a PS3 right now would be that awesome lineup of blueray movies announced at CES.Gaming-wise, my 360 covers all the bases for me.

I am not disagreeing with you at all, but really at $500 its a STEAL of a BR player. Given the number of games sold there are probably a fair number of PS3 units used as dedicated BR players. The remote is quite good as well so for a total of $525 you get a better looking/playing BR player than some of the near/beyond 1K units.

Well I'll tell you this.I was thinking strongly about waiting at least a year before getting one,but I'm thinking now I may get one around April.Mainly for blueray movies, because I agree with you that it's a good value for a HD movie player.I'm sure the games will come, though there isn't much on the horizen in the way of PS exclusives that capture my attention.

"AVN 2007: No Porn on Blu-ray?
Has Sony gone mad? Prominent adult movie producer Digital Playground (site) says it is forced to use HD DVD instead of Blu-ray, because Sony does not allow XXX-rated movies to be released on Blu-ray. "

Well, I think its not just Sony alone to say anything what happens to blu-ray camp. It a consortium to say final word.

Vivid has said to release blu-ray movies, so don't know really how is pr0n issue seen in a blu-ray camp.
http://www.dvdnewsroom.com/blu-ray/vivid-to-bring-first-adult-title-to-blu-ray-hd-dvd/

More here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=785327

Summary: this is just Sony's own blu-ray factory policy not to touch xxx-rated content. Other blu-ray factories are fine to print any disc they want, but problem is they still have a very limited supply capacity. Sony factories are only mass production factories today. So this might drive indie, small studios, porn studios to hddvd format at least for now. Do they come back if BD format "wins" time will tell. Or is this a deal breaker for hddvd camp....

How about you?

I bought 13 so far...

I plan on buy my 1st disc later this month, I was far from impressed with the movie that came with the system.

I've bought 33 HD-DVD discs for my 360 addon
