Hello all,

I am a long time lurker and have purchased a new JVC set about a week ago. I have found the info on this site to be most useful. The one thing I have noticed over my previous set (samsung taints CRT projection) is the inconsistent black reproduction. When most of the screen is supposed to reproduce black it seems more dark gray than black. I would say it resembles a black shirt that has faded over time(LOLA) or the brightness is too high.

Other times it seems to reproduce deeper blacks but only when parts of the screen are dark or black. like people's clothing(not faded) and cars etc. It really seems that the deeps blacks change everytime the scene changes even on the same movie or show. The same image can look dark the one frame, then, it pans away and back again and the shade of black changes.

Sorry to ramble I was just wondering if the set was"just the way it is" or maybe something else is going on. I at one point questioned if I may need a power conditioner or something. Is it something that could be remedied by ISF calibration? thanks,

Shawn

The human eye changes its perception of "black" depending on the APL (Average Picture Level). What happens is if surrounding or adjacent to black areas you have white or bright grays or even high luminance colors, the blacks will appear darker than they really are.

As the APL diminishes and the bright areas become either smaller or less "Bright" the blacks will register truer to what they really are. I am pretty sure this is what you are experiencing.

Check to see if you have "Dynamic Gamma" turned on in the menu. The shift in color is probably what you seeing.

I hate it and turn it off.

Thanks guys. Yup all process modes are off smart picture, Dynamic Gamma etc. I have the iris level set at -4 brightness at -15 and picture at -5. I just can't get those rich blacks but it seems like its possible just the brightness/contrast just can't be dialed in. I've been back and forth with the picture settings at least once a day. It looks like my old CRT projection Tv when I would turn up the brightness during the day to watch TV.

Have you tried calibrating the contrast or brightness with a DVD like Avia or DVE (Digital Video Essentials)? That's probably your best bet.

You should note though that the JVC D-ILA will not reach the black levels of CRT.

Well I just finished watching Crank. The Picture was much better than the movie..lol Yeah I knew it wouldn't be as good as reproduing blacks I was just really hoping it would be closer. I'll try to snap a pic this week. I'm probably just paranoid lol
