I have a Toshiba Rear Projection TV (I can't remember the model #) and I can see cobwebs on the screen. The maintenance plan just ran out, so taking it in to get it fixed is going to cost me some money.

Is there any way to safely take off the screen and clean the back of it, or should I just let a proffessional do it?

Not sure about Toshiba's but my Samsung has a small access panel on each side. I used a yardstick with some duct tape wrapped sticky-side-out on the end to remove some threads from mine...

I don't have anything like that.

Anyone can learn to do it. Generally speaking grill pops off, then 4 screws at bottom of screen frame, then either lift straight up or pops forward then lifts out. Avoid touching the inner side of the sreens, but if you must then use only dry soft cloth to lightly dust inside of screen(s). Use any non-amonia glass cleaner on the lenses & mirror (unless mylar).
