Is there any list of PS3's games audio support?
I want to know because of 6.1 PCM or Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES.
Plus I only have optical or coaxial.

You will never get anything higher than 2.1 channel PCM via Optical.

If you were using HDMI to a receiver, you would get 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 channel PCM.

My receiver is showing 7.1 channels of PCM for everything even if it is not encoded that way. The PS3 apparently is doing something to the signal processing.

Optical should be outputting 5.1.

Indeed ;)

The real beauty of the 'Net? You get to say things like this, even when they make absolutely no sense.

Why bother replying if your facts are straight up false.

Heh, no he's right. *LPCM* is limited to 2 channels via Optical.

However with "Bitstream", Dolby and DTS 5.1 (and 6.1) are possible via Optical.

Games use anything they want, I guess. Some are 2-ch PCM, others are 5.1 Dolby...

I'm fairly certain there was 5.1 linear pcm options with Optical in the manual audio setup. Can't quite remember.

Dammit PCM, LPCM, DPCM this is all bull$#!+. I just need a list that list specs of games audio and video.

No there definitely is not.

Yes. LPCM is 96/24 which can travel via optical

So you are telling me that you can do better than 2 channel PCM via Optical. Are you sure? Really Sure? How about some research before you spout of crap? See below.

Don't get confused I never said anything about DD or DTS. I was specifically addressing PCM. So anytime you feel like apologizing, I'll be waiting along with the rest of those "keyboard commands".

Optical out can carry DD5.1 and DTS tracks to your receiver, providing a much clearer, enjoyable sound. I highly recommend using optical cable, as the results are VERY noticeable. Optical only has enough bandwidth for PCM 2.0 uncompressed, resulting in uncompressed stereo sound (stereo? Meh!). To get the full PCM 7.1 experience, you’ll need...

HDMI. This can carry the next gen audio formats such as DTS-HD MA, Dolby True-HD and uncompressed PCM 5.1-7.1 audio at a full bitrate. The only other method of getting these codecs is through analog out, which is not supported by any console on the market today (but is supported by stand alone HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players).

You are a little confused.

Optical output doesn't support 7.1 output. That is a HDMI-only feature. This isn't a limitation of the PS3, it's a limitation of the optical connection, as designed and implemented in all consumer devices.

The same goes for 5.1 LPCM. Optical simply doesn't support multichannel uncompressed LPCM output, which is the format some games apparently use. Again, this is a limitation of the optical connection, as designed and implemented in all consumer devices. It is not a limitation that is specific to the PS3.

If you have optical, you need to set the PS3 to output bitstream / Dolby Digital. If you set your PS3 to LPCM, the best you can get is stereo, because that is all optical can support. As implemented in consumer devices, the optical connection supports a maximum codec transport of 1.5 Mbps.

Bitstream
5.1 Dolby Digital (DVD ) = 0.448 Mbps
5.1 Dolby Digital (Bluray) = 0.640 Mbps
5.1 DTS = 0.768 Mbps
6.1 DTS-ES = 1.5 Mbps

LPCM
2.0 16/48 LPCM = 1.5 Mbps (supported by optical)
5.1 16/48 LPCM = 4.6 Mbps (HDMI only)
5.1 24/48 LPCM = 6.9 Mbps (HDMI only)
7.1 24/48 LPCM = 9.2 Mbps (HDMI only)
7.1 24/96 LPCM = 18.4 Mbps (HDMI only)

Thank you. At least some sanity here. :)

NICE REPLY. How many channels is that? ANYONE?

Go your PS3 settings.

Sound Settings.

Then select Optical out.

Please note to everyone HOW MANY CHANNELS IT SAYS FOR LPCM?

First off, stop triple posting. Second, what the hell this PCM crap end up being my topic. Third, you never answered my question so you failed either way.

1.) Ok Nancy

2.) You asked the Question regarding 6.1 channel PCM in your original post. You not remember?

3.) I stated the fact that you wouldn't get more than 2 channel PCM via Optical. You will still get your 5.1 channel DD signals via Optical just fine.

Yea I remember. I remember also saying LIST OF PS3 games. NOT JUST THAT PCM 2.1 channel crap.
