View Full Version : PS3, Component, Infocus X1 and BluRay Playback
Chris Ruhl 01-09-07, 01:04 PM I've seen contrasting information about this in several different AVS forums, figured I'd ask here.
I have my PS3 currently hooked up to my LCD via HDMI. However, my kids are bugging me to attach it to the Infocus X1 projector (with the Faradouja chip). I don't have the component cables for the PS3 yet. I'm interested in movie playback as well as gaming on the projector. Here's my question:
Will the PS3 allow BluRay playback over the component cables to the X1? What will the resolution be over component with BluRay?
I know the native resolution of the X1 is lower than that of the PS3. However, historically speaking people have found that upscaling DVD players (over component) look noticably better on the X1 than standard DVD. I'm not going to upgrade my projector. I've had it almost three years and I don't think I have 200 hours on the bulb yet (we just use it for "movie night" on weekends).
Thanks!

AmigaDude 01-09-07, 02:11 PM Should work, depending on which adapter you have.
Svideo ->Component cable
Description: Supports connection from the S-Video port on your InFocus digital display to Component Video for use with DVD players, HDTV Receivers, etc. Compatible with 480i signals; not for use with progressive signals.
VESA ->Component cable
Description: Supports connection from the VESA port on your InFocus digital display to Component Video for use with DVD players, HDTV Receivers, etc. Compatible with 480p or 1080i signals.
Chris Ruhl 01-09-07, 05:09 PM I was going to purchase the VESA adapter to get 1080i out of the PS3. The PS3 will playback BluRay over component at 1080i then?
Thanks for responding.

Mongoos150 01-09-07, 05:39 PM If you're taking that same resolution - 1080p - 1920x1080 - and blowing it up to a much larger size than your LCD (via projector) - won't the pixels be much larger, therefore resulting in a crappier picture? Or is the projector's resolution in fact much higher than 1920x1080 (1080p)?
1080i is possible via component, yes. I don't think 1080p is, but the X1 probably doesn't support it anyway.
The PS3 always plays Blurays in 1080i (or 1080p if avail.). It does not, and can not be set to, play Blurays in 720p or any other resolution.
It also doesn't upconvert standard DVDs beyond 480p (though that feature is promised for the future, it will almost surely be limited to HDMI only).

PS3 does indeed output 1080p via component. I have it set up as such on my LN-S4095d.
Chris Ruhl 01-09-07, 07:44 PM Thanks for the info. Somebody in another forum said due to some issues with Sony, the PS3 wouldn't ouptut 1080i via component with BluRay.
Mongoos150: Everything I've heard from historical discussions says upscaling and HDTV on the X1 looks great. Not quite perfect, but most certainly better than 480i and 480p.

Chris Ruhl 01-31-07, 10:30 AM Just a followup for the archives:
I ended up buying a breakout cable (VGA to male component) from Monoprice ($3 versus $20 from Sony), a female to female RCA/component adapter and a set of component cables for the PS3.
Set up was a little tricky, but it worked. Make sure you have the PS3 outputing 720p and 1080i via component.
Picture was much better than standard DVD going through the Faradouja processor (480i). I know it's not HD, but it is close and it looks pretty darned good.
sirach38 08-17-07, 11:51 PM Hello Chris,
I just got my PS3 and bought the sony Multi-AV component cable and it has trouble synching with my Infocus X1. I've updated the PS3 firmware to 1.9 but still no go. It only works with the composite connection. I saw your reply and I'm in the process of ordering the video cables that you bought from monoprice. I just want to run these by you:
PID 3567 4 in 1 component cable for Wii Xbox PS3/PS2
PID 2170 6ft VGA to 3 RCA component video cable (HD15-3-RCA)
PID 3002 3-RCA RGB coupler for component video cable extension
Are these the correct items?
Thanks!

wont play 1080i via component? Sure it will. Or do you mean just with a projector hook up.
sirach38 08-19-07, 09:44 PM I finally got my projector to synch with the PS3. Yes, the the component can output 1080i both with standard DVD and Blu Ray. I just watched the blu-ray version of Ice Age, Meltdown. When comparing it with the regular DVD version, I couldn't really tell the difference. It certainly upconverts standard DVD well, but I can't say I was "blown away" by Blu-ray. Maybe, it's because my Infocus X1 is just a 480p SVGA projector. I've only got about 1600 hours on it so far. So it will be a little while before I upgrade, unless the bulb blows prematurely.
Would the picture quality be significantly better with 720p or 1080p projectors?
Anyway, thanks!
Mike LS 08-20-07, 09:32 AM I've always been under the impression that the VGA input bypasses the Faradouja in the X1 and you had to use the component to svideo adapter from Infocus to do this?
I have my DVD player connected via component to the s video input (feeding 480i to let the X1 upscale) and my game consoles to the VGA via component and let the consoles output at their native rez. Always worked well for me.

I've got an InFocus sp4805. I've only watched a handful of Blu-Ray discs so far, but my experience has been that some look noticeably better, and some look about the same. For instance, Pirates of the Caribbean (the first one) looks noticeably better than the DVD (IMO).
Some other discs:
Total Recall: same
Stargate: better, especially with less aliasing
Tomb Raider: never saw the DVD, but this looked great. As an aside, both my wife and I enjoyed this movie, and neither of us thought we would. We only rented it so we could watch another BD.

sirach38 08-21-07, 09:58 PM I've only one BD movie so far and I'm going to try to get 300 as I've yet to see the movie. I certainly can appreciate the improved picture quality of standard DVDs. I'm going to hold off on purchasing BDs since it's possible that newer versions may come out soon after the BD specs are finalized in October. I do enjoy watching the "extras" and from I've heard, this is where HD-DVD disks have an advantage over BD. I've sent for the 5 free BDs and I can't wait to see Pearl Harbor on Blu ray. I've got the standard DVD version and will surely compare it with the Blu Ray version.
Has anyone compared the picture quality (PQ) between a 480p vs 720p vs 1080p projector? I just want to know if its worth spending 2-3x more for a native 1080p projector if the PQ of a 720p is not that much different especially if viewed from a distance. I have my viewing distance set back by about 13 feet and from articles on viewing distances, one may not really notice that much of a difference.

With the way PJ prices are dropping, I'm more likely to keep the difference instead of plunking it down on a more expensive PJ which likely will need to be upgraded within 3-5 years. I've owned my X1 for about 4 years now and so far so good. I've had a little problem with a solid white band that appears frequently, but somehow goes away if a tilt the PJ a certain way. I've posted the problem and a pic on it, but so far, nobody's been able to figure it out. As long as I can make it go away, I'll be sticking with my X1.
Thanks for the replies!
dagware 08-22-07, 02:25 PM With respect to purchasing DVDs and BDs, since I joined NetFlix, I don't buy many any more. I have a 300 disc DVD changer with something like 250 discs in it, but it hasn't had anything added to it for quite a while.
I've had the same thoughts about upgrading my 4805 as you have had with your X1. And I agree that the longer we can hold out, the better. From what I've read, if you sit something like 2x the screen width, you won't notice the difference. I don't know if that's true or not, but I choose to believe it so I can resist the urge to upgrade! :p

HurricaneGT 11-09-07, 10:57 AM I have an X1 and just got the PS3 and can not get the two to play nice!
I have an Xbox 360 and [play it in 1080I no problems. but no matter what I set to PS# at 480 is the most I can get. I am running it through a Onkyo reciver. Any thoughts I am using a vesa to componet cable and only get the blue screen.
Thanks Garret
Mike LS 11-09-07, 11:17 AM 480 is the most your projector will display anyway.
Have you tried connecting the console directly to the PJ? When there's a question, take as many connections out as possible and go from there.
HurricaneGT 11-09-07, 11:56 AM Thanks that was my next step. I am new to all this the pj will only put out 480, the book says it will put out 1080 I am confused....
Chris Ruhl 11-09-07, 12:21 PM Ah, this post is back from the dead....
There is a night and day difference between the X1 projecting a signal it is receiving at 480 versus the image it projects from a signal it is receiving at 1080i. I'm sending you instructions on how to synch the two up.
Mike LS 11-09-07, 01:10 PM Thanks that was my next step. I am new to all this the pj will only put out 480, the book says it will put out 1080 I am confused....
The max resolution of the X1 is 480p, although it will accept signals up to 1080i. It still displays them at 480p.
The X1 functions much like any real HD display, without actually being HD. It will accept all signals up to 1080i and display them at its max resolution.
As for the difference.....eh. It's very hard for me to see the difference on a game console outputting 480p and 720p on that display. It's there, but it's very small. Looks great either way, don't get me wrong, but don't go to the ends of the earth to get it working if there's not an easy fix. You're not missing too much.
Chris Ruhl 11-09-07, 01:50 PM Oh you are right, but its worth it for Blu Ray alone. I certainly noticed a big difference between a 480p and a 1080i signal.... but then again YMMV.

Chris,
I used PS3 component cable (actually an old ps2 component, isn't it the same, the cable outputs GT4 at 1080i from ps2)
to
"VGA to Component Video Adaptor"
from Infocus Store
http://www.infocus.com/Accessories/Cable/SP_VESA_ADPT_R.aspx
I can't get the signal? It is really the same set up you have done. Any idea?
GOT IT,
I was plugging into the Computer Out instead of Computer In. I was careless. Funny thing all the letters got smaller, anyway I will mess with setting now. :)
HurricaneGT 11-09-07, 09:54 PM Thanks every one got it working.
Jeff Lebowski 12-11-07, 07:30 PM Can anyone help me out with getting this going? (PS3 to X1). Currently have it set up with component out from PS3 to component to VGA adapter into X1. Hit the computer button on the X1 remote to acquire the VGA signal, but it just says 'Searching...' and I get nothing but a blue screen. Have tried all the settings in the PS3 video menu, as well as connecting everything and pressing and holding the PS3 power button when I first fire it up. Still no joy. What am I missing?
