I have noticed a lot of folks talking about how XM is following it’s agreement with clear channel and that commercials are only broadcast on those channels.

I tend to disagree to me XM radio service has seemed now like a huge scam there’s plenty of commercials on all stations. Not to mention the annoying DJ’S especially on BPM Allen Freed Dude STFU seriously im tired of talking play music with ought announcements. It’s like embarrassing when blasting music in your car and the song is not over yet and some guy comes “This is Allen Freed Tonight cascada in Montclair nj” remind me once again why am I paying for this service? Hell FM & HD radio offer better playlist with the commercials and guess what it’s free service.

This is the last year I am subscribing to XM although the idea of travelling anywhere and listening to the same station is in theoretical true it does not function so well when you loose track of satellite resulting in white noise aka=Same as Static another tactic they portrayed to catch on customers.

Remember the commercials for xm when it 1st came out no more static coast to coast coverage commercial free hum false advertisement I wonder if a class action lawsuit can be set for this false advertisement.

Is XM holding a gun to your head to keep the sub.?

Try Sirius, but they have annoying DJ's and self promoting ads too.

FM and HD are free, enjoy the 25 mins. of commercials, babbling DJ's and endless mindless contests.. Have fun!!

XM and/or Sirus both sound attrocious. Compressed MP3 at 64K at best. CD quality? yeah perhaps in 5 years.

More like 5 years ago. It's not coming back... fortunately people aren't subscribing for the sound quality as much as the content quality. Then again, I think I've seen that debate before... ;)

You're going to hold XM to false advertising from a commercial they ran 5 years ago? Guess what, XM HAD commercials on ALL music streams back then. They eliminated them in 2004...

...in short, you're wrong all the way through this post. Don't tell me FM radio doesn't (besides commercials) advertise their other shows and local concerts-- that's all XM and SIRIUS are doing on their music channels (Regional "CM" channels aside)

The commercials really do bug the crap out of me but I have gotten over it.

The other channels....dont have any commercials...not sure where you get that idea.

If commercials bother you that much, take a regular FM radio, solder in a discriminator tap and usea an SCA decoder. Most places you'll find free commercial free music. Elevator music, and other crap, but it's there.

Int3grity , I know what you mean and I'm with you on that

commercial free.. pfft right

I just activated my xm, and I (like you) was conviced that there was supposed to be NO commercial, whatsoever on xm

at least, it's not as annoying as any fm radio.. (which play 20 songs, on repeat, mixed with 45 minute of commercial per hour)

XM has 73 music channels, 69 of the are 100% commercial free. If you don't listen to 11, 21, 22 or 24, I'm not sure what music channels your listening to, but none of the others have commercials.

3 1/2 years with XM and I love it 2 1/4 years with Sirius and I love it!

Wow, one post and done, unless of course you and Domincsanterre are one in the same.
All I know is I just had to go for a week without my XM and it sucked real bad. The number of commercials on FM is unbelievable.

Regular FM/AM radio cannot compete with either service based on content, and COMMERCIALS.

Terrestrial radio has unfortunately pigeonholed itself into this position and there appears to be no way out. A new business model would be needed.

Oh yeah.

Satellite radio ACCOMPLISHES that business model.

I forgot.

DOH!!!

Music stations do NOT have commercials. Talk radio has commercials. XM NEVER said that anything was commercial free besides their music stations.

Clearchannel paid XM to have 4 channels on the service. Sometime in the middle of the agreement they started running commericals. XM sued them to stop. XM lost.

To make up for it XM ADDED 4 new channels of commercial free music.

XM has no plans to renew Clear Channel's contract when it is over.

They also took clearchannel OFF of the on-line service.

What else could they do?

The only problem with Sat radio, is the fact that you are being charged to listen to something being broadcast over the airwaves. By law if it's broadcast you are allowed to hear it. The only thing you can't do is use what you hear for nefarious purposes, or forcebly decrypt an encrypted signal.

Since the law says we own the airwaves, why are we paying to listen to it?

Using the word 'airwaves' opens up a lot of debate now a days.

So you feel DirecTV is in violation as well? I'm not sure any satellite communications falls under the same "airwaves" rules as the terrestrial broadcasts you are comparing it to.

They also took clearchannel OFF of the on-line service.

Not only are they removed form XM Radio Online, but XM Canada, XM on DirecTV and XM On AOL Radio. XM has made it clear they don't want to be asociated with those channels.

I called and asked those channels to be blocked since I find them offensive. :) Not to mention the commericals clear channel does play are very semi-legit (be your own boss, make money now, be a secret shopper, etc).

They can block any channels you wish, she actually found it amusing I was blocking all the clearchannel stations. My radio now skips right over them.
The only way they know for sure you aren't listening to them is if you have them blocked. It would be great if you could get everyone to block them all.

Since the law says we own the airwaves, why are we paying to listen to it?

You're paying them to re-transmit the signal in a format that that is different from regular radio signals using a portion of the spectrum that they have paid us (the government) for use of.

I bet that they're trembling in their boots at the prospect of that. How do you think that this would hurt XM?

My goal was not to "show them" anything. I got annoyed at flipping through the channels, listening to a song, and the annoying commercials come up and I realize I stopped on a clear channel station.

It wouldn't hurt XM at all, but if 80% of the subscribers blocked those stations clear channel would realize that no one wanted to hear that and either stop or leave XM. Once agian, of course this won't happen but if everyone thinks they can't make a difference because no one else will nothing would ever get done. :)

Don't really think your sarcasm was extremely productive either, but you still thought it would be fun. You sure showed me!

Telling you what's on another channel, or what shows are coming isn't a commercial. It's a PROMOTIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT (or promo). And it's a service! It's how many of us hear of shows we'd like to hear!

Neither XM nor Sirius ever claimed to be wall-to-wall music. Nor would I pay for them if they were. RADIO is driven by human beings! Yes some jocks talk too much. But if I want wall to wall music, I'll play mp3s! From radio I want a PERSON on the other end. THAT is what XM and Sirius are, and always have been. It's RADIO, not background music!

If you heard an ADVERTISEMENT for a CLIENT (say Ford, or Sony), THEN you'd be able to claim "false advertising". But saying that Bob Dylan is about to start his show on channel 138 (or whatever) is a freakin' service I'm happy to have!

There are plenty of advertisment for clients on the clearchannel stations, which are grouped right in with the rest of the music channels on the lineup. At least XM marked them with CM on the channel description (ClearChannel Music is what I assume it is, ComMercials also seems to fit well though).

I have no problem with channel promos and DJ's. I actually prefer sirius because the dj's seem to have a bit more personality.

The "CM" means commericals. They don't want anyone knowing it's a ClearChannel issue I assure you...

They don't seem the hide that fact, but alas I see it does stand for commericals:
