I am just beginning to learn about the whole big world beyond the on/off button! I am trying to find out if it is worth it to buy an upscaling dvd player. My Gateway plasma does not get it's 720p/1080i through the DVI, only the component input. Does an upscaling dvd player really make a difference if it is hooked up through a component cable and not an hdmi(with a dvi adapter). Does this question even make sense.

I want the best video quality possible without a new tv. My dvd player is 8 years old(a real dinosaur) and yesterday I purchased a sony 5 disc upscaling player. It is only connected via rca cables(I think that's what they are called white yellow and red tips) since there is no component output. The quality of the picture is already much better.

I'm wondering if I return this for another player with component output will it be an even better picture? Does the player need to upscale or is this unneccesary since my tv will not handle this through the needed inputs?

Thanks for helping me pull off the shoulder on to the av highway!!!

You have a plasma with DVI that accepts 720p/1080i over component, but not over DVI? That's very strange; are you sure? I've never heard of that, but then I haven't heard of most things.

Component upscaling players are getting hard to find because the industry wants you to use HDMI. Scan this forum for "component" threads for recommendations.

I can't comment on your new player, other than that composite cables (white, yellow, red) are seldom recommended these days. They won't carry HD or even a progressive signal. Component, DVI and HDMI are better in this regard, and have better quality signals even at 480i.

The Oppo 970 is a bargain at $149; many happy fans here. Has component and HDMI. Even if you are restricted to 480i or 480p output, the results may be better than what you have.
