Hi All,

I'm looking to buy a new Upconverting DVD for my HT. I'm trying to find one that has a USB input on it. This is the only one I've found, but I'm not crazy about it.

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10074175&catid=20208#

I'm in Canada, so preferrably something available here, but I'll definitely order from the US if need be.

It could be a dvd HDD recorder as well. Budget - $300

Thanks

Oppo 970 for $149. I don't believe the USB port has the bandwidth for full video, though. It's intended for jpg and such.

I have the Oppo 970 for a week now. It's an ok jack-of-all-trade. What really bugs me is the usb 1 port. I can't for the life of me understand why the usb 1 in the world of usb 2. I think LG is the only other company that makes dvd players with usb ports. I am looking for one with usb 2.

Thanks, I read some of the reviews and seems to be everything I need. Any idea where this can be purchased in Canada? All of the sites I've found are US and won't ship here. Thanks

You mean the Oppo? They might ship to Canada; I'm not sure. There is one Canadian reseller listed here: http://www.oppodigital.com/wheretobuy.html

I don't know if you can get them in Canada, but there seems to be some happy people using the Philips DVP 5965k (http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=39338) here in Aus... can't vouch personally, but worth looking into.

The Aussie Philips model spoco2 refers to is the same as the 5960 project240 linked to. Like the Oppo the USB port on this model is only USB1.1, but the throughput is much better on the Philips than on the Oppo and it plays movies happily off thumbdrive or external hard drive. It uses the same Mediatek chipset as the Oppo, though PQ might not be quite as good. - DR

This DVD player doesn't support DTS, so it's been knocked off my list. Right now Oppo is the only other runner, but it doesn't look like the 971 or 981 has a USB input on them, only the 970.

It didn't have DTS originally, but a firmware update gave it DTS (at least this was the case with the Aussie model)... check to see if the US model has had a similar update as it'd be a shame to discount it based on outdated info. :)

Like the Aussie version, the US version does support DTS with the new firmware (which should already be installed on any newly-purchased player). - DR
