I have a Samsung HPS4273 42' Plasma TV and I chose the Samsung HD960 for my new high quality DVD player to go along with it.

For the most part, watching DVDs has been a real treat, with one glaring exception.

Watching ALIAS season 5 on DVD, I encountered multiple occurences of out of sync audio as well as a very annoying problem with darkly-lit interior scenes when the camera was close up to the actor's faces. The shadowing on their faces seemed almost "painted" on, giving it the feeling as though I was watching a moving painting, rather than a real life image.

It was extremely disconcerting obviously.

I haven't noticed these issues on other DVDs, but honestly I haven't tried that many others to see if it happened again.

The player also takes what I consider an inordinate amount of time to perform a layer switch.

Has anyone else tried this player, and if so have you noticed any of these issues? Perhaps I got a problem unit and should just switch it for a new one? Or should I just go out and choose a different player for my setup?

Oh, the player is directly connected to the TV via HDMI for video, and the audio is handled via an Optical cable to my receiver.

Any input is appreciated.

Thats strange the funny thing is yesterday i bought the Alias Season 5 dvd but unfortunately returned my HD960. I m going to pick up a Denon 1930 in the near future and i ll test it for you. Which episode and time was out of sync?

I can't be certain what exact episode it was, but the audio issue happened more than once.

As for the artifacting in dimly-lit areas on actor's faces, that happened constantly.

Samsung HD960 ProblemI don't mean to be rude. I learned the hard way myself, but the problem is you bought a Samsung HD960.

Samsung shouldn't even be allowed to market these things as upconvert models. I am a Samsung fan, great TV's, great phones, great home security monitoring systems, crappy dvd players.

Fair enough.Ahhh, I saw you ordered an Oppo 970. Great choice. You will see a big difference when you get it. Enjoy!

Thanks. I'm looking forward to putting it through its paces and see how it performs. I just want a clean image, a silent and deadly layer change and a fast load. ;)

Here's my issues: I purchased it in Aug. did not get it hooked up till Oct. .
I really was not impressed that much with the picture, I am running it to a Samsung HLS6188WX/XAA DLP. The lockups were small and sometimes would not happen at all. It had nothing to do with layer swicthing because the dvds i was viewing were single layer. Then it progressively got worse where it just froze solid and i had to power it off. Before that happened I also purchased a Samsung DVD-VR345/XAA 1080i up conversion recorder. Now when I played a DVD on that it would flash 1080i on the screen and the picture was fantastic compared to the 960.
So after that comparison and the long freezes i figured it had to go back.
Sent it to a certified repair shop in New Jersey. Because of my location (upstate NY). Samsung paid for shipping back and forth. Which I thought was kind of funny because the web site says you are responsible for that.
So I pack it all nice in it's original box and packing.
2 weeks later I see a bigger samsung box on my porch, yippie
Get it in the house open it up and that certified repair shop packed it in this bigger box with one sheet of large bubble wrap on the bottom and one on the top!
4" of slop on each end and 3 " on each side! So my repaired 960 has been banging back and forth all the way from jersey!
Well I saw that and I'm wondering how well is this going to work?
Hooked it all up again, pooped in a DVD and the picture is still ho hum compared to the 345.
I made it through I think 4 to 6 movies before the first pause started again.
I have made some adjustments but the picture still does not equal what the 345 puts out at 1080i.
I have a question though when the hd960 hdmi is set to auto and a dvd is played is the resolution supposed to pop -up like it does on my HD345vr?
So you actually know what it is up converting to? Anybody know that?
