Anyone figure out a sure way to get HD .ts files to stream from Vista to the 360?

I've had no luck so far. HDTVpump doesn't work and fddshow crashes Vista. Perhaps Vista is still too new.

Only luck I've had is converting them into dvr-ms files. Fortunately its very quick and easily reversed.

Have you tried TVersity?

Doesn't TVersity use fddshow?

Not sure about others but for me it wasn't what I was looking for. The difference in quality that the transcoding process introduced was obvious. I'd rather just convert them to dvr-ms files as at least with that process there is no loss in quality.

rclifton,

How to you go about converting the .ts files into dvr-ms files? I ask beacuse I rip backups of my DVD's onto my pc and would like to stream them onto my TV thru my 360 & MCE pc.

Thanks much,

Brandon

I use TSConverter Ver. 2.5 available here http://www.dvbportal.de/

I've never used it for dvd's so I can't comment on that aspect. I use it for HDTV .TS recordings. Only two small problems I have with it are, Sometimes there is some weird metadata that I can't seem to get rid of when viewing the thumbnails within the 360's video menu, and for some reason occasionally a clip will not generate a picture for the thumbnail. It's just blank. If anyone has some info with either of these things in regards to dvr-ms files I'd love to hear it.

As far as the conversion process goes tho, it's very fast and doesn't alter the actual data stream at all.

Any way to use this TSConverter for my WinXP (not Media Center) PC? Will the 360 recognize and play (through WMP11) .dvr-ms files on the PC?

TSConverter works just fine under XP. In fact thats what I use to convert the files because the program itself doesn't currently work very well with Vista. dvr-ms files are the format that MCE records in, so the 360 sees it as a native file type like wmv/wma. I would assume they would stream just fine from an XP machine with WMP11 but can't confirm it.

TSConverter sounds promising. Is there any compression with it or do the files stay the same size? Oh, do you still get 5.1 sound after converting?

I'm also going to check out TVersity. Interesting how it converts the files on the fly. Saves a step, but makes the 360 work. I wonder if it effects performance.

There is no real file size difference when you convert to dvr-ms, a couple hundred megs at most sometimes, but I think that just has to do with the way the files are stored. The actual picture/sound data is not changed at all.

TVersity works, although in my experience you need a pretty stout machine to process 1080i/p files and the quality was not acceptable to me. It handled DVD stuff just fine tho.

I do this by streaming .mpg files. Works great.
