View Full Version : Noticeable Horizontal Lines on Wii 480p

I just got some component cables for my Wii. However after using them I noticed that in 480p I see horizontal lines, each alternating between a lighter shade and darker shade. All the colors come though appropriately but these lines are quite noticeable. When I revert back to 480i no problem. Would this still be a problem related to the cable?

My TV is a Sharp 42D62U

Thats kinda sad to hear. Supposedly a great 1080p TV but I think your problem is in the scaler.

I suppose your TV does not have composite but only component? If it works well at 480i through component, then its the scaler.

no issue on Sony46e2000 rear projection LCD 720p TV.

I notice horizontal lines in certain areas of certain games (Excite Truck and Zelda comes to mind), usually in fog or smoke that are supposed to be semi-transparent.

I think it's just a limitation of the Wii's graphics.

Seconded on Excite Truck, but mostly on the dead center of the screen (where I imagine the focus of my RPTV is at its best). I fired it up and saw horizontal banding, most noticible in the dead center of the screen. tho not so much banding as "horizontal lines" being visible....

I was wondering if the game is actually running in 480i and not 480p...I didn't press my TV's display button to find out. I didn't notice this at all in Wii sports.

Excite Truck is definately on the fugly size of things with regards to graphics, but its still silly fun with that controller.

DaverJ, that is exactly what I commented about in my thread "My composite vs. component experience". I just feel that HD TV's are overkill for the Wii, and that they really showcase every imperfection and limitation of the Wii's graphics. I definitely noticed horizontal lines and jaggies on my Olevia 227v. Well, I returned that tv (it had an awesome HD picture though), and am eagerly awaiting S-Video cables for my Sony Trintron flat screen CRT :D

Well most of us dont have any of those sets left in our homes :)

Something wrong with the 4:3 sets that people in your neighborhood are leaving on the curbside on garbage-day while they all upgrade to widescreen digital displays? :)

I admit the Wii looks best on an analog 4:3 set......but it looks acceptable on smaller widescreen digitals too.....a 27" widescreen is a pretty small set, how close were you to it, a yard away??? now, on my set...65" widescreen...its pretty...well...its last gen.
Kinda like a weak xbox game, tho I imagine that will change too as developers leverage the power of the chipsets to get more visuals out of the game.

Actually, xbox games look alot better than Wii games right now, thats for sure.

Yeah, it's definitely a great TV. The TV actually has 2 composite options (for 2 of the inputs). But as far as it being a scaler problem I cannot say, but I'd buy that answer, though I still may try one more cable if I can get a chance (my brother has one I can use for free).

That's exactly what I see, and it's especially bad in fog or smoke. The problem is that I can see it in other areas. It's playable but I just may switch it back to 480i.

Sorry to stray OT for a second, but the wife got a new lens for her camera  and had to check it out:

Back on topic... :D

Messing in Photoshop I noticed the lines the OP was talking about!

Check this out -- note: it's a zoomed-in crop of a photo:

I had the horizontal line problem and posted about it after I first got my component cables. I called them scan lines because that's what they looked like to me. I have a Samsung 4095 1080p LCD, and turning the game mode on reduced the line effect to where it was much more difficult to see. Now I only notice it under certain conditions in the game. Also I never noticed it in any game other than Zelda.

The game doesn't look anywhere near that good in real life (the far away shot), it looks much more like the zoomed-in shot :)

I think its good fun, though...and the tracks seem to get prettier the further you go in the game.

I also notice the horizontal lines on my Wii and Samsung HL-S5686W via component 480p. I sit about 9 feet away and it is very noticeable on some scenes (smoke, fog, water). I have tried playing at 480i with component cables but the image is noticeably clearer in 480p even with the horizontal lines.

It's not your TV, it's the console. It's just a graphics glitch with transparency, and it's on lots of games. I have seen this in some GameCube games as well while playing them on Wii, I've been to lazy to look to see if it happens on the actually GameCube console though. Here it is in Zelda on my set (cropped out of a much larger pic).

Most notably, the GC title TLOZ Wind Waker. During those nifty little smoke effects you'll see it clear as day. It's the only title in my library to do so which I find pretty strange, none of it occurs in any of the GC Resident Evil titles and those games are visual masterpieces.

Indeed it was WindWaker that I noticed it in.

That is exactly what I see. Since it occurs in Wind Waker the error must have been carried over to Twilight Princess since TP uses a modified WW engine. I have not noticed this distortion on Wii Sports (my only other Wii game). Perhaps we should make Nintendo aware of this to prevent future games from suffering this error.

I was looking for any issues with Excite Truck that had this interlacing issue, but to throw in my $0.02, it's probably not an error, it's probably just a rendering method that reduces the burden on the hardware by 50% for alpha blending (which on modern video cards should be nearly free, but on the backwards Wii hardware, who knows, maybe the hamster gets tired).

It's not your television. It's the Wii. I get the same thing. Especially in Zelda. In the fog and steam from water you see a lot of it. It's really annoying, as I didn't see it with my GameCube. Makes me wonder if the Wii is graphically inferior.
