Just got a new Onkyo reciever to go w/ my 2 year old Mitsu 52525. I have an HDMI DVD player pluged into the TV, & I hooked the digital coax output into the reciever. Problem is I'm not getting any sound. When I hook the coax cable into the DVD directly it works great. Also, the Onkyo lights up with the little dolby symbol when I plug the coax into the tv so I know the connection is good. What am I missing?

Also if I have my cable box plugged into the TV w/ comp cables & regular stereo cables then I cant get 5.1 from my high def channels correct? If I hook it up w/ cable coax cables can I get the 5.1 sound? Thanks a ton for any help

I don't believe the tv will relay the digital audio from the HDMI input, out through the digital coax jack. The digital coax jack is only for digital audio from the internal tuner. You will need to run the digital audio from the dvd player seperately to the Onkyo. Same with your cable box. It will need a seperate digital connection to the Onkyo for 5.1 surround.

well crap, I was afraid you were going to say that. Now I have to dig out my cable box & pray it has a Optical out or I'm screwed.

I prefer to take audio straight from the source to the speakers/receiver. However, your set up should work because the audio output on the tv is supposed to output whatever signal you are receiving into the tv, whether its 5.1 or 2 ch stereo. Go into the audio settings or setup for audio and check to see if there is a option for turning audio output on. Some sets have this feature. Ive seen it on the Sony sets for sure.
