When Konami released Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the PlayStation 10 years ago, it was a resurrection of sorts for the undead franchise. By incorporating gameplay elements from Nintendo's Metroid series of games, Symphony of the Night established a template for 2D Castlevania entries that has endured through multiple installments on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS.

Now the publisher is bringing that formula back to the realm of the living (room), as Konami is showing off Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the Xbox Live Arcade at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. As with most older games brought to Xbox Live Arcade games, Symphony of the Night won't be a mere port. Konami has said the game will feature enhanced graphics and sound, widescreen support, achievements, and leaderboards. Players will be able to choose between the original graphics or enhanced visuals that mitigate sprite pixilation when the game is played in high-definition.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is expected to release on the Xbox Live Arcade later this year. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's hands-on impressions from the CES show floor.

Seems like the 200.6% achievement should be worth a little more.

I hope they also balance out the game a little. At later levels with better equipment, with Alucard becomes practically invincible.

I also hope the game has aged well. This may be blasphemy, but I found the newest DS Castlevania games to better in almost every way. Although I do miss the dual wielding that Alucard could do. :)

This game is simply amazing. The best Castlevania ever.

I own the Playstation original and have played it to death. I have no interest in picking it up. However if you've never played it this is a must own.

I still dont quite believe its actually coming... or at least not in complete form (its too big to include all the music, etc).

I'm tempted to get it, as i love this game, but i expect trying to play it with the miserable 360 d-pad will be something about as enjoyable as inserting toothpicks under your fingernails.

Its not the best castlevania though. That title belongs to (JPN only) Dracula X: Chi no Rondo on PC-engine CD (turbo grafx CD).

Seems like the 200.6% achievement should be worth a little more.

I thought that was only possible with glitches in the game? If so, Im surprised they didnt fix those by now...

Is this officially going to be the Playstation version? I never played the Saturn version, but Wiki lists a few upgrades.

Import Saturn differences:
- The Japanese Saturn version of Symphony of the Night features Maria Renard as a playable character.
- A few new weapons/items/armor for Alucard's game.
- A new sprite for Richter is featured in addition to the old one, based on Ayami Kojima's depiction of the character. This is the sprite Richter uses when he fights Alucard in the Saturn version and can be used as a playable character as well.
- There are 2 areas of the castle (Cursed Prison and Underground Garden) which were not in the PS1 version. The Underground Garden area features a new boss, the Skeleton King.
- Also, when playing as Maria or Richter, certain areas of the castle play remixes of classic Castlevania music, such as Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears.
