I am a happy ruby owner since last June. My Ruby has now about 160 hours. Almost from the beginning I noticed that when switching the PJ on the bulb delayed sometimes more than usual, and before the actual output of light from the lens, a couple of “ticks” can be heard. As time went by, it was more frequent to hear a sequence of about five “ticks” every second, before a more metallic “clink” just before the bulb lighted up. Sometimes, after a sequence of those five ticks, the PJ rest for a while a couple of seconds before starting withy another sequence of ticks. Eventually until now the bulb always lighted up.
What starts worrying me is that lately this strange behavior is taking more and more time and sometimes even the PJ shuts itself down without lighting it up with the led “LAMP/COVER” in green. If I then I try to start it up, the green led goes off, and the sequences of “ticks” starts again. The night before yesterday, for the desperation of my wife and me it took more that 20 minutes before enjoying the film, but last night it took only two ticks before lighting it up.
Did anyone experienced something like this? Can it be solved (apart from sending it to service? Might it be a sign of a prolonged agony before an early death of the bulb?

I believe that you are having a problem with the powersupply in the projector, others have reported the same issue, I had a Ruby but never had that issue I would contact Sony or your dealer to get it serviced
Thank you very much for your advise, funlvr1965. I will let you know what all this turns out

I had the same problem. The issue is the lamp cover is not on right. Remove the cover and reinstalled. No more problem. The plink you hear is the ballast kicking in. that is normal. the ticks before are not.
I have 550 hours on it since replacing the cover, no worries..

Yup, it is the cover... I would reinsert it. :)

I have the same problem but not as long to start with 1000 hrs on lamp. Do you mean completely remove cover from housing and put it back on or just slide it open all the way. I tried taking the lamp out once and putting it back in but it didn't make a difference. Never noticed the lamp cover flashing until the other night.

I had this problem originally; no matter how many times I opened and closed the cover, I could never get the indicator light to go away. Turned out it was the power supply. I believe (my guess) is that this light (cover light) goes on when a litany of problems occur with the projector, not just when the cover is not closed.

I opened and closed the cover a couple of times this weekend without any result, apparently. I did not remove the lamp, because it was a more difficult operation, since I have the PJ ceiling mounted. Still the PJ light up eventually and thanks god every time these days in less than five minutes. I am afraid it's got to be the power supply, or something similar, as you suggested. I am resisting the inevitable sending it to service ..... :( . If I do, I will ask for correcting some slight misconvergence I can also perceive.
Thanks to everybody for the comments!

Stumbled upon this thread while looking for info on the same problem.
The lamp has 115 hours on it and I can hear the "ticks".
I had the same problem with the old lamp but hoped that it was due to the lamps imminent death.
Does anyone know what can be done, as there is almost no info on the problem?

You need to call Sony repair in Texas. I had this problem and it was the powersupply. I sent the projector in and they fixed it for me. This may be under warranty because lots of people have had problems with their powersupply.
