i'm an HD DVD owner and i must say that HD DVD's showing at CES, as far as software goes, was embarassing. Blu Ray had an excellent showing and convinced me without a doubt to get a BD player. Now, i'd like some help from you guys on movies i want to get. Can you tell me what you think of them compared to standard def?

They are:

Underworld Evolution
X-Men 3
Fantastic Four
Saw
Monster House
Silent Hill
Stargate
Devils Rejects
Brothers Grimm
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
The Descent

These are some for now, and feel free to offer a new convert whatever looks good in the horror genre.

They all look better than the regular DVD

Welcome aboard.

Looks like a good list you got there. The only ones that may have comparitively less-then-stellar PQ quality from reviews are Silent Hill and maybe Saw. I don't have those anyway. The rest should knock your socks off.

Definitely get Underworld evolution and X-Men 3, excellent pq.

Out of the ones listed I will only tell you of the ones I own/have seen...

Underworld Evolution: Looks amazing and is extremely sharp... vastly superior to SD.
X-Men 3: Has grain (as director intended), but looks amazing, much better than the DVD
Silent Hill: Many complain about this one being "barely above DVD", but I think it is because of the noise Gans put into the film just like the games, but I found it very sharp and the audio alone is worth it.

I am also interested in hearing about Devils Rejects since I loved the movie (and the first one also).

See the sticky thread. :)

Would the be the BD tier thread?

Anyway from what I've heard the first 3 and Monster house and LOEG are all great picture wise. LOEG is also pretty advanced with the interactivity. If the film didn't bore me to tears, I'd have bought it just to check it out.

You're better off flicking through the reviews at places like highdefdigest and looking at the tier system. It'll only take you a few moments and could provide valuable info

hi Primus67,

As you're a horror movie fan, I wish to add that Sony has recently released in continental Europe the BD of the unrated version of Hostel. The disc has no region code (I've seen it on a japanese PS3) and it includes an uncompressed PCM English track. No supplements though.

I was somehow expecting a very grainy image, but instead I was pleasantly surprised by the PQ.

I read somewhere that Sony will release it around March, but I don't know if it's going to be unrated. If in doubt, ours is. :)

Speaking purely from Eye Candy alone.

Devil's Rejects PQ is not great, I would put it as near the bottom 25% of all disks I've seen. (I think even T5E looks better).

Silent Hill I would place right in the middle in terms of PQ.

Brother's Grimm & UE is above average but there are better eye candy disks. Remember though that some parts of these movies all have very good eye candy, but then even T5E has some incredible shots (it's just the artifacts that dragged it down).

I will put F4 & X3 & LXG near the top 25% of disks because I can't detect any flaw, but F4 is the shiniest one if you want to see vivid colors. The Human Torch flight scenes look very good to me.

Although others commented about the added fake grain in Monster House, I would say it looks good and should be in top 25%.

Descent PQ is top notch and looks slightly better than the rest on that list, but you have to be a real fan of the horror genre and empathize with 30something yuppie women to like this movie. But beyond that, I can't comment.

Have not opened my Stargate & Saw disks yet.

believe me, i'd much rather see 30something yuppie women than the 18-24 year old barbies flooding the horror scene.

Underworld Evolution
Saw
Brothers Grimm

These are some for now, and feel free to offer a new convert whatever looks good in the horror genre.

I only have a HD DVD player now, but i can still enjoy those titles:)

Brothers Grimm can be purchased on HD DVD in Spain (www.dvdgo.com)
Or in Japan (www.yesasia.com)
Saw I & II and Underworld Evolution is coming out on HD DVD in March in Spain :D

I'll probably have to buy Saw III on Blu-ray though :)

If you live outside Europe the titles are going to cost you a little more ...

Edit: Oh i forgot to add that there is a terrific US import site that imports HD DVD's outside US: www.xploitedcinema.com

Devils Reject's has a bunch of Rob Zombie intended grain, but it is very detailed, up-close shots especially. It's not sharp since it's supposed to look like a 70's movie. House of 1000 Corpses will be out this summer also, why they are waiting to realease all these good movies is confusing the crap out of me. I didn't it's that hard to take a DVD movie and bring it to BR

Well, to quote FLBoy from a different thread, "I'm now format neutral, with the HD A1 and the PS3. I know it's bigamy, but I love them both!" I made it official today in a big and costly way. I purchased the PS3 60G with the remote and more Blu-ray titles than I really could afford post Christmas. I haven't had time to check reviews but here is what I grabbed up at Fry's Electronics (much cheaper than Best Buy):

Kingdom of Heaven
Underworld Evolution
Fantastic Four
X-Men: The Last Stand
Into The Blue
Eight Below

The original Speed disc will not play on the Samsung, but Fox is exchanging those. The Descent has a BD-J issue with Sony standalone and Pioneer, but Sony put out the FW fix for that today. That's about it for problem discs.

Congrats Aaron! I know it was tough on you but you gotta take care of #1 first. We all work hard for our money and each person can only do so much waiting. Let us folks still in the HD DVD camp know what you think about KoH and UE.

What I really want is the movies - I'm not buying the movies to look at the box with shiny lights. We buy the box so that we can watch the movies.

This is the point that people who are really into this because they love movies understand clearly. There are already chinese highdef players on a 3rd format called EVD sold for < 100, and apparently, you can even watch chinese programmng and movies in highdef on EVD players.

Yet the chances of us buying those players are nil because those players don't even have Warner, Paramount, Weinstein Brothers & Universal titles that plays on them.

The way it stands now, we are forced to buy a BD player to watch the sony, fox, mgm, disney, lionsgate movies, and we are also forced to buy a HDDVD player to watch the weinstein and Universal movies.

With the upcoming release slate already announced from the BD studios. The thing about Universal and Weinstein I can't figure out is : What is left?

Movies are released and we know what they are. We know the movies we liked the last few years. There's only a handful from Universal. (I don't even know any from Weinstein).

This is why as the movies pile up, around release dates of the new BD titles, the retail sites that track these statistitcs are going to show this simple reality --- people will buy good movies, more will even buy the box to watch the movies they want.

As the release slate shows, at this pace, by March the releases up to June will be known, and a ton of titles would already be out. It will be impossible to ignore them.

i read a weird report somewhere that some one movie, i forgot which, will only play on a ps3! anyone know what i'm talkin about?

That was FUD. Someone posted a thread here that The Descent would only play on the PS3. They were wrong. The pioneer is the only one that doesn't play on, unless the FW fix came out already.

Primus, forget that the PS3 plays games, most people are recommending it for it's BD playback. The games are a bonus (as are the downloadable trailers). The main reasons to get a PS3 are Price, quality, features and resale value (should BD fail). For the most part, the PS3 is a virtually risk free investment

Hey, I got the PS3 60 gb last week and I'm using it as a BD player. Have not played any PS3 games on it at all. It is a slick unit, heavy as all get out and a bit hot too. I can see where the George Foreman grill comparison came from. PQ has been great but I've only viewed KOH and Tears of the Sun. Black Hawk Down is next. Truthfully, the PQ is only equal to my Tosh HD-A1, not better judging from the first 2 BD movies. Ergonomics of the unit are better, but I hate the game controller as a remote. I will have to figure the Harmony 880 route with the PS2 adapter. The load times are much more consumer friendly.

Anyway, it is good to be format neutral.

What is the next movie to view on BD for picture quality after the above? Underworld? Ice Age?

Good choices, but you may want to check out Crank as well.

There is a Sony PS3 standard remote out now.
