View Full Version : Predictions: Casino Royale, can it crack Amazon top 10?
eightninesuited 01-12-07, 12:58 PM What do you think? Superman Returns on HD DVD hit #33 if I recall. If Crank can hit #76, where would Casino Royale fall?
The sales gap between top 10 to top 30 has to be huge. But this title will give us a solid indicator as to where High Def ranks amongst DVDs.
I think it will, but the best candidates I would say would be the spider-man and the POTC series.
TwinTurboJosh 01-12-07, 01:05 PM At first glance I would have said "no," but if you're right about Superman Returns on HD-DVD hitting #33 then I think Casino Royale should be able to briefly break into the Top 10. I guess it depends on what else is hot that week. There should be another nice bump in PS3 purchases just in time for that release also.

I guarantee that POTC black pearl will just fly off the shelves!!
rlsmith 01-12-07, 01:07 PM Interesting question.
Casino Royale is a new title, Spiderman (for example) is on DVD and has been on HBO.
I personally tend to buy things that I don't already have but to not buy titles that I already have even if on an inferior format or pressing. I think many people have the same bias.
Spiderman III next Christmas on Blu-ray will be an interesting test indeed.
I guarantee that POTC black pearl will just fly off the shelves!!
Yup... very popular and the ratings of both series are a plus (to some parents).
Porscheboy16 01-12-07, 01:10 PM Spiderman III and Casino Royale are best candidates. I am going to buy both.
Adam_ME 01-12-07, 01:27 PM Didn't Batman Begins get into the Top 30 briefly? Casino Royale has a shot at matching that. Although it's gonna be priced higher than Batman Begins, so that might cut down on potential sales.
efranzen 01-12-07, 01:30 PM One sales number I thought was more impressive than the Superman Returns HD DVD hitting #33 was that at one point the HD DVD MI box set was outselling the MI:3 standard DVD.
I think a BD or HD DVD getting into the top 10 would be encouraging for all of us high definition fans. It would mean, for at least a brief time, that it has gotten out of the niche category.
metalsaber 01-12-07, 01:58 PM If you mean overall top 10, then I doubt it.
NickFoley 01-12-07, 02:13 PM If you mean overall top 10, then I doubt it.
Why? If little 'ole Crank can get below #80, why would it be far-fetched to believe that Casino Royale would blow right by it?
Right now it'll be too much, but at the current rate of growth it might just do it. I think Pirates will be more popular but some people might just stick to their DVD. That said, quite a lot of early adopters would have held off buying it in the first place.
ckenisell 01-12-07, 02:23 PM What about Pirates III? :)
skoolpsyk 01-12-07, 02:26 PM In the Sony style stores they run a demo that includes a Casino Royal preview. The PQ was amazing. Since it may end up the THE demo disc, that would certainly help sales.

It seems like it'll be a BD50 and AVC... shouldn't have any excuses for being anything less than incredible!
I can't wait to get it. It wouldn't surprise me if it hit go into the teens (<20), but I would be surprised if it hit <10 -- that'd be some massive sales to pull that off (although it depends on what's out on DVD that week, probably).
Jiffylush 01-12-07, 02:59 PM I am going to buy Casino Royale, haven't even seen it yet. I am probably not buying it from amazon though.

Crank got to 76 in the top 100 DVD's, not overall at Amazon. But I'm pretty sure the DVD section is what most of us, excluding metalsaber, are talking about.
Andrew P 01-12-07, 03:14 PM Nope unless you plan a buy Casino Royale day :)
JosephShaw 01-12-07, 03:14 PM As far as cracking the Top 10 DVD's, I think if Casino Royale doesn't crack it, the POTC and Spiderman movies have the best shot.
gand41f 01-12-07, 03:17 PM One sales number I thought was more impressive than the Superman Returns HD DVD hitting #33 was that at one point the HD DVD MI box set was outselling the MI:3 standard DVD.
That might have something to do with a lot of people already having MI 1 and 2 on standard DVD.... ;)
OTOH, MI 1 DVD was a crappy non-anamorphic transfer so I can see lots of highdef junkies jumping on the HD DVD box set to get all 3 even if they had older ones on DVD.
enjoy

gand41f 01-12-07, 03:21 PM As much as I want it to, I don't think it will. My guess is that #10 movie will have to sell about 1/10 of the #1 movie. Assuming #1 that week will be Casino Royale (DVD), there has to be a Blu-ray player in about 10% of the movie-buying homes by March. I don't think even PS3 can sell that quickly. ;)
But I'll be happy to be proven wrong.... :)
just guessing

OK, I see what you're saying. Where do you find Amazon's overall top 10 list?
nharmon91 01-12-07, 03:31 PM I guarantee that POTC black pearl will just fly off the shelves!!
Why? Everyone already owns it on DVD (best selling all time I think), And the average consumer isnt going to buy a second one. Though theres no doubt it will be the highest ever when released
Toshiro_Mifune 01-12-07, 04:00 PM Possibly and maybe even probably. As we saw with the Christmas shopping season the target audience of the PS3 is definitely the target audience of Casino Royale. While I don't think the PS3 userbase is going to buy nearly as many discs as those who are buying standalone players are, I think there is a lot of them that will buy big releases like Casino Royale.

I'm talking about DVDs. I don't believe it will. Pirates on the other hand "might"
The only reason I'm saying that is that even by March, BD will not be the most dominant format, unless there is such a crappy DVD release schedule for that period.
darinp2 01-12-07, 04:45 PM My guess is that it has about a 50/50 shot. If Amazon holds off putting it up as a preorder like they did a little bit with "Clerks 2" then that could help it get a little higher (from going up closer to the ship date) than if we could preorder it now and sales get more spread out.

I agree on pirates... title that is interesting to both adults and kids is an winner...
phansson 01-12-07, 07:16 PM Yes, Of course, I am a HUGE Bond fan.
Archipel 01-12-07, 07:53 PM Casino Royale was a blockbuster movie for 2006, a critically acclaimed movie and the best Bond movie in years. It is also a showcase movie for the Blu Ray format and will get the best treatment from Sony. If Casino Royale can not break the top 10 no other HD movie can till the POTC or Spiderman films.
nharmon91 01-12-07, 10:09 PM too late. Crank just broke top 100.
My friend, I think you are the late one.
metalsaber 01-12-07, 10:41 PM My friend, I think you are the late one.
Is this a bad time to tell him the Beatles broke up? :D
dialog_gvf 01-12-07, 10:45 PM I guarantee that POTC black pearl will just fly off the shelves!!
It already has for DVD. And many people with BD have it on DVD.
A huge hit is more guaranteed from a day and date release. People can only speculate POTC III and Spiderman III will be huge hits. Casino Royale is known to be.

Casino Royale has a good chanse of cracking the top 10 list.
Who does not like bond? :)
ckenisell 01-15-07, 10:03 AM I know I might get flamed for this, but I'm not a big Bond fan. It just passed me by. Perhpas it's because I'm only 30 and bond started back in 1962 (I think). Was Dr. No Bond's first movie appearance?
Now, having said that, I'm actually interested in this Bond movie. Quick question: If I buy this movie site unseen, will I understand the story-line without knowing any of Bond's backstory? Thanks!
AIUI chet, each bond is stand alone and while there might be slight references to earlier stories they're watchable in their own right. That said I've never "got" bond either, they always appear to be rather weak action films to me. There are occasionaly some unique moments that stand out. I might watch this when it comes on TV but I won't be first in the queue for this BD

As long as you know that this is supposed to take place when Bond first gets his 00 designation, then yes.

You've already lost me.
space2001 01-15-07, 11:39 AM 007 is a designation/rank. casino royale is just when he becomes 007.
Do you need to know that though? It's probably easier to say that it's the first bond film chronologically. I believe that they skipped the book when they started making the films because of rights issues and that's why the other studio made the spoof version of Casino Royale.
Actually one thing that would be fantastic on the DVD, if they had a documentary about the whole JB rights fiasco, that would be very interesting! I doubt they will though, I'd almost get the BD just for that documentary alone (as long as it was a decent length)
ckenisell 01-15-07, 10:18 PM It sounds like this one would actually be the best Bond movie to watch for those that have never seen one before. Nice. I'll definitely check it out.
