View Full Version : Lionsgate Blu titles, mostly 1.85:1 video and 6.1 audio?
PioManiac 01-12-07, 02:27 PM Anyone else notice a trend in Lionsgate Blu Ray releases?
I was just browsing the up-coming list of Blu Ray titles Here (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html)
and noticed many from Lionsgate are 1.85:1 or 1.78:1 to fill up our 16:9 HDTV screens
and almost all have audio options listed as
English Dolby Digital EX Surround (6.1)
English DTS-HD High Resolution ES (6.1)
I dont have an HDMI receiver yet, so cant take advantage of lossless PCM yet,
but my 6.1 Yamaha (and my 16:9 Plasma) are sure going to be happy
when my newest purchases arrive from Amazon. (the Decent and Crank)
Can someone confirm "the Decent" and "Crank", both also from Lionsgate
have DTS-HD audio as well?, is it DTS-HD High Resolution ES (6.1) or Master Audio lossless?
(I heard Crank and Decent have LPCM 7.1)
at a glance I've found these listed as 1.78:1 video and 6.1 audio
Total Recall
Employee of the Month
Saw I, II, III
American Psycho
First Blood
Reservoir Dogs
2.35:1/2.40:1 video, but with 6.1 audio are:
Crash
Lord of War
Terminator II
The Punisher
Stargate
correct me if I'm mistaken, or add to the list if you can
NickFoley 01-12-07, 02:39 PM http://imdb.com/ is the best resource on the web for movie details, especially for checking Aspect Ratios. In the Other Details section there is a subheading called "Technical Specs." There you will find the aspect ration, filming technique, camera used, and other info.
Based on your list:
Employee of the Month 1.85 : 1
Saw I, II, III 1.85 : 1 for all 3
American Psycho 2:35:1
First Blood 2:35:1
Reservoir Dogs 2:35:1
The Descent 2:35:1
Crank 1.85 : 1
For audio specs, you'll have to check the reviews, read these forums, or check the discs out yourself.
Just a quick aspect ratio rundown from DVDEmpire:
2.35:1 and higher:
Terminator 2
Lord of War
The Punisher
Crash
Stargate
Stir Of Echoes
The Descent
Reservoir Dogs
First Blood
American Psycho
hammer99 01-12-07, 02:41 PM The Devil's Rejects is also from Liongate & is 1.85:1 ... I forget what the audio is.
My bad. Someone will have to tell DVDEmpire to fix their specs!
PioManiac 01-12-07, 02:54 PM Holy Crap!
Lions Gate is scoring major points with me!
All Flicks that are on my must have list
..except for maybe Employee of the Month
So glad I added the PS3 to my entertainment system!
...the old XBOX HD DVD player is going to be collecting nothing but dust soon.
I've got 20 Blu titles already, mostly in the Top 2 Teirs
...but the future is looking even better.
txfilmguy 01-12-07, 03:29 PM Going 6.1 on all the titles is a good step in the right direction for LionsGate, but the aspect ratio has little to do with the studio. The movies are presented the way they were intended to be seen. A majority of the movies shot since the 1960's are in 1.85:1, though often times action films and epics, which are great home theater show-off pieces, are shot wider.
PioManiac 01-12-07, 03:43 PM Can someone who has Crank and Decent handy check this out
Are they both DTS-HD High Resolution ES (6.1)
or DTS-HD MA Master Audio lossless?
I heard Crank and Decent are the first to also offer LPCM 7.1
I have them Both in transit from amazon.com,
but they wont arrive here in Canada for at least 10 days :(
Dan Hitchman 01-12-07, 04:00 PM Unless someone with audio equipment that takes 8 channel LPCM via HDMI can verify that the back surround channels are indeed stereo rather than a single mono back channel duplicated, I will assume that these are actually 6.1 mixes. There is a Japanese Blu-Ray anime title that really is the first with a 7.1 audio mix.
If WB wants to really shake up the works then they should have The Lord of the Rings extended cuts fully remixed to 24/96, 8 channel audio.

Fettastic 01-12-07, 04:44 PM I'm really surprised so many people are interested in "filling the screen". It's just not something I spend my time worrying about.
It is uncomfortably close to the pan and scan debacle of DVD which used to really get my blood pressure up.

Well I'm 100% for OAR, its just nice when I get to use all the pixels I paid good money for occasionally :D
I would never stretch or zoom a 2.35:1 movie,
But watching a good 1.85:1 flick that fills my screen isnt a bad thing is it?
I pick my titles on the Movie first,
if I want it on BD I check the PQ teir location next
I buy almost instantly if its in the top 2 Teirs
Then if it turns out to be a 1.85:1 and 6.1 audio its just an added bonus
It's like putting on a comfy old pair of jeans,
and discovering by accident a $20 bill in the pocket.
I wasnt necessarily looking for it, but I'll gladly take it without complaining. :)
SirDrexl 01-12-07, 05:53 PM American Psycho and Reservoir Dogs had better not be 1.85:1. I assume it's a mistake.
