Hello group,

I am looking for a new set-top DVD player for a non-high def TV. One thing I have noticed on some DVD players is a front USB port for digital cameras, camcorders, and flash drives.

Here are my questions:

1) can any, some or all of these DVD players read and external bakup drive with say 80 or 120 GB of space?

2) where is a good place to go to easily find brands & models that have a USB port?

Thanks,

Lydokane

What is on your backup drive that you plan to read?

Some - like the Philips 5960 - can read some USB drives, provided the latter are formatted FAT32 and are either extremely low power or have an external power source. (I believe there is a LG player with the same capability.) There are some limits, based on breadth and depth of the directory. - DR

Mainly divix/xvid files in .AVI format. If I miss any of my weekly t.v. programs I download them and watch on the PC. It would be nice to sit on the couch and watch on the t.v. I am familiar with some of the Philips models. I will also look into the LG. Are there any other players that can read an external HDD?

Thanks,

The best player on the market with a USB port is the Oppo 970, but it has some problems with playing movies over the USB, which is why I recommended the Philips. The 5960 is a big improvement on DivX over the 640. I don't know of any player that works better for this application. - DR
