View Full Version : Missing Crank Blu-ray disc!!
DLopatin 01-12-07, 10:53 PM Guys, I believe this is due to theft at the store, not a production problem but I just want to make everyone aware of what happened:
I just bought a Blu-ray version of "Crank" in a Walmart in West Palm Beach, Florida. It had the slip-case over it. Anyways, when I removed the slipcase, there was the SECURITY PROTECTION slickers on the TOP & BOTTOM of the Blu-ray DVD case. I removed the protective stickers and opened the Blu-ray case. Inside there was a smashed up piece of plastic where the Blu-ray disc was supposed to be, but no disc!! I don't know if this is a factory problem or someone robbed the disc before I got it, but there is no disc inside!! I am not sure what to do. I can bring this back to the retailer (Walmart), but they are just going to think I stole the disc out of the DVD case myself. PLEASE NOTE, there was NO PLASTIC around the DVD, but the SECURITY PROTECTION stickers were fully attached on the top and bottom of the DVD case. I didn't even think of the plastic around the Blu-ray case (I usually would notice it), but due to the slip-case over it, it was not noticable. I assume this is due to prior theft, but I just want to make people aware of it. I sent an email to Lionsgate. What do you guys think I should do?? I probably will have to bring this back to Walmart & try to explain to them I am not lying or trying to rip them off... This sucks...I was really looking forward to watching this tonight!!
Moral of the story: When there is a slip cover over the DVD (like Crank), make sure it is sealed with plastic on the inside (not just contains the SECURITY LABELS). Unless of course this is a production problem...
Bookerman 01-12-07, 10:58 PM That sucks.
I'm almost positive a place like Wal-mart will exchange it for you with little hassle.
I believe most big named retail places will exchange opened movies (DVD/Blu-ray), provided that it's for another copy of the same movie and not some other movie or a refund.

Agreed!
aaronwt 01-13-07, 01:01 AM What the heck is that slip cover for? They could have left it off and charged a little less. My slip cover immediately went in the trash.

Yeah, I don't have any use for them either, but I'll put them away in case I want to sell the disc someday.
What I have read is that they supposedly are a theft deterrent by being one more thing in the way of shoplifters. It didn't work so well in this case.
WriteSimple 01-13-07, 04:40 AM In this particular kind of situation, an obvious question must be asked.
Because of what happened, are you now CRANKY? ;) :D :D :D

I don't think that you'll have any problem with the retailer. It's only a glitch in the packaging process. It could have easily happened on a CD, DVD or any packaged media.
My last Blu-ray order with Amazon was shipped one month ago and the package never arrived. I contacted Amazon explaining the problem and the immediately sent another shipment at no charge. I only hope that this time it doesn't get lost or stolen again. :)
Actually, the slip covered version at BB is cheaper than the version at CC which has no slip cover, $24 VS $30.
Also last time I was checking out at walmart a girl brought a dvd to the register and told the employee that someone stole a disc, yet it still had all the security stickers on it. What happened is that it had a security sticker on top and bottom but not on the side, so the thief opened the side up and slid his hand in the case and got the movie out while not breaking any of the security stickers.
GizmoDVD 01-13-07, 10:22 AM Slip Cover? Is this a first for the BR/HD? Is it similar to DVD slipcases? Pictures?!?
tutelary 01-13-07, 10:42 AM This happened to me once, and only once. I open every disc I buy IN the store now, in front of someone who works there, before I leave.

He says the disc was missing the shrinkwrap and had a "smashed up piece of plastic" inside, so I think it's more likely that someone stole the disc and put the slipcover back on.
tlreddragon 01-13-07, 11:40 AM Yeah I really hate slip covers too and was surprised to see Crank had one. You would think shrink wrap and three non-penetrable security stickers is enough to deter theft. Having a slip cover on a DVD makes as much sense as having a slip cover on a magazine.
Raines8416 01-13-07, 12:29 PM Only security tape on the top and bottom? Yep, sounds like theft. I noticed that on my copy too, the tape was only on the top and bottom, which makes it useless. However, if someone wants to steal it, they will steal it. I work Loss Prevention at best buy, and I see it everyday. Someone just takes a knife and runs it down the side of a DVD case. It cuts the shrink wrap and the security tape, then they can just bend the case open and the disk can fall out. It takes all of 2 seconds to steal a movie this way.
Anywho, I bought a TV series at work one day, it was shrink wrapped and everything, and it was missing one of the DVDs. Obviously a manufacturing error, it might just be cause I work there, but they had no problem taking it back.
Plarodin 01-13-07, 01:06 PM thats cool i steal stuff from best buy all the time. It's a very nice store.

Seriously?

I haven't seen any slipcovers for BD/HD DVD either. I second the request for pics? I just rented Crank from Netflix so I haven't even seen this in the store yet.

Just an update for everyone. I returned the Blu-ray to Walmart & they let me exchange it for another Crank Blu-ray. They didn't give me a problem at all. The new copy was shrinkwrapped (my original was not) and had the security stickers on the top and bottom only (just like my original copy). I have a feeling it was in store theft. It was nice that Walmart didn't give me a problem at all. I do recommend that anyone buying the Blu-rays or DVDs with Slipcovers, remove the slipcover and make sure the case is covered in shrinkwrap. With the slipcover on (and the security stickers), you can't tell if the case has been opened & the disc robbed out of it. I assume this is not a common occurance (but maybe it is?). Thanks to everyone who replied back also...just don't want to see anyone get ripped off. Thanks to Walmart too. I guess it is true they will take back almost anything...!

You aren't missing anything. It is the same as the original cover on the case. It doesn't add to the packaging in anyway, they easily tear and rip. I plan to toss mine...

You now have 1 strike. Three strikes you're blacklistlisted from returning anything at any Walmart. Don't believe me? Give it a try.
MSmith83 01-13-07, 02:39 PM The OP got the better end of the deal. Crank is best bought with the disc missing. The box is more entertaining than this poorly-made movie. :D

Actually Walmart didn't take any personal info from me. Just took the old Blu-ray case and the new Blu-ray case, did a return off the original receipt and gave me the new one. I was surpised at how they didn't give me a hard time or anything...
