So as I have been getting used to over the past few years, one of the highlights of the hockey season has been hockey day in Canada. As the day, and the especially the coverage blows any American coverage of hockey away. Well, not only did D* not begin the coverage at noon, like they have in the past, but now the first game, that was to begin at 2pm is currently not being covered. Thanks again D*!

The CBC feed of the game is not on Comcast Center Ice either. Does this have to do with NBC being the only ones allowed to show games in the US right now? The pregame HDIC stuff was on Comcast.

That should NOT be and issue for people with the Center Ice Package. That's why I pay for it.

Exactly, its one of the few main reasons why I shell out the $ to get it. This is really, really pissing me off. If the reason is that its a hockey black out! God help hockey. Don't they realize nobody gives a s#%t about hockey, they need all the views they can get!

Called d* they they have it all figured out... ur well, the genius rep said that its blacked out said its because I live so close to the game and the game isn't sold out. Before I lost it I said please transfer me to someone that could answer my logical question in a logical manner without some complete line of BS. She did, I just got off the phone, on hold for 20 minutes, no one ever answered. Excellent!

I think it may now be an NHL issue, D* just changed the guide to reflect the canucks / leafs game at 7 to begin the coverage. What a bunch of idiots!

Come on guys, if Center Ice isn't carrying the games then how is this DirecTV's fault? Someone already posted that Center Ice on Comcast doesn't have it either. The providers can't show what isn't provided to them by Center Ice.

According to NBC's TV contract, when they are showing regional coverage, they own the exclusive window...

This operates much like MLB EI, where Fox blackouts every game broadcast during it's regional coverage.

That is pathetic, I figured that was the case, its just hard to believe. This isn't Canada. The NHL needs every viewer it can get here. They are really F'ing this up. Especially today... in my opinion this is the best reg. season of the NHL with HDIC, and with this bs rule, its been screwed up.

There was a report on DBSTalk that now that NBC's coverage is over the Center Ice game for Hockey Day is now opened up.

Certainly seems like the blame here is totally on NBC's shoulder.

I guess this title of this thread is now wrong, however, the D* rep should have known the answer to why it wasn't on. Not to mention the fact that the guide had it on at 2pm.

Yeah I'm sure that is NBC reason for showing games on Saturday this week. I have a feeling it is more to do with not wanting to go up against NFL playoffs head to head.

NBC's shoulder?

It seems to me to be a NHL call. NBC bought exclusivity, if it wasn't for sale they couldn't have. Get it?

Couldn't agree more, this is on the NHL. Problem is they didnt have a bargaining chip at all, either way, as mentioned earlier a compromise would be to either not have a game today, or make a blackout exception today only. Either way, poor job NHL.

Considering that NBC's deal is a revenue sharing deal it would part the blame on both parties.

True, the NHL are the ones who agreed to whatever deal they have with NBC.

Although I can sympathise with those in the US who couldn't get the earlier Hockey Day In Canada games, I don't think it's too hard to understand the lack of availability in the US, with the NBC games having national exclusivity.

For those who are unwilling to accept the contractual constraints of the US version of Center Ice, I have two words: Bell ExpressVu.

Yeah, worse part is I live about an hour from the border, CBC is carried in most cities east of me, but my cable company doesn't carry it... our time warner, syracuse ny, is been terrible for as long as I can remember, leaving me with D* and no CBC. Oh well, I'll calm down again, until the olympics start and the CBC blows NBC's coverage out of the water, once again.

Well get all your complaints about not having the CBC for Olympics out in 2008, as that will be their last Olympics. CTV will be taking over OTA Olympic coverage in 2010 in Canada.

Be nice.

Saturday's NFL games didn't start until 4:30pm, after the NHL games on NBC were over. On Sunday, the NFL starts at 1pm, and would directly compete with the NFL Playoff games. A no-brainer for Saturday.

Yes there are NFL games both days, but the NHL games on Saturday were not on at the same time as the NFL games were. If NBC had shown Sunday games they would have gone head to head with the NFL playoffs in the same timeslot.

No kidding? I did not know that... well that will make not having the option of getting CBC here in the states easier.

Joe,

Thank you for your feedback. Hockey Day In Canada was on from 12pm to 2pm and resumed at 4:30pm and ran until the Edmonton @ Calgary game was over. The Montreal/Ottawa game was pulled due to NBC's exclusive broadcast rights. We hope you enjoyed the NHL on NBC and apologize for any inconvenience.

Thanks,
NHL Center Ice

As far as I know, no one picked up the HDIC feed at noon... also D* kept screwing up when they finally got the feed up. I ended up watching the news on CBC, then when they went back to actual hockey, full screen graphic with music.

Here on Comcast, Center Ice had the pregame HDIC program at noon.

NBC gets exclusive broadcasting rights when they pay no rights fees at all? What a deal! I pay for Center Ice in order to get OUT OF MARKET games and I get hosed... Something isn't adding up. I refuse to watch another game on NBC because of this.

Dish Network also had noon HDIC coverage. DirecTV was the only provider that did not.

NBC gets what they agreed to with the NHL. At least it's not as onerous for customers as the FOX Saturday exclusivity w/ MLB (i.e., Center Ice subscribers can see the other out-of-market NBC regional games). Since there aren't generally any games other than those produced by NBC during their exclusive window, it wasn't really an issue last year and likely won't be much of one the rest of this year.

That said, NBC starting their broadcast schedule earlier this year, in conflict with HDIC, did set folks up for disappointment...and if the NHL/NBC was smart, it would have allowed the Canadian game to be shown, regardless of exclusivity, as a special case. Not a brilliant move to alienate the few loyal fans they do have.

Considering it is a revenue sharing deal, if the CBC would allow NBC to simsub their own commercials into the CBC Center Ice games in their time slot, NBC should have no problem letting those games be seen on Center Ice. Anyways I think their is only 2 other games this year in the NBC time slot that are not on NBC.

With all of this being said, my original post was d* drops the puck once again... they didn't have any coverage until around 4pm, then that was dropped around 5:30ish until 7. So my original post wasn't too far off. I'm glad to hear others at least got most of the HDIC coverage. Even thought it is a BS job by the NHL-NBC not getting the Sens blowout the Habs wasn't the worst thing. As a D* customer , the day was made into quite a disapointment. Even more than the last last labor agreement made it.

So the bottom line for DirecTV subscribers is that DirecTV screwed up in not airing the program from 12 noon to 2:00 PM and then dropping it at 6:30. They also screwed up in not being able to tell people why the 2:00 PM game wasn't shown.

We pay a lot of money for NHL Center Ice Package and we haven't been treated very well. I think they should give all of us a credit for messing things up but so far, I haven't had ANY response to my email from them and I'm not holding my breath.

I had a response, which didn't tell me anything I had not already figured out for myself. They certainly have not offered any sort of credit to me for it. The attitude of 'deal with it or leave' continues to run rampant there when it comes to my account, despite their claims that I am an "A-list customer that is very important to them." When I do finally cancel, I'll be sure to tell them exactly why, although it seems they don't give a damn.

D* does not care, I can tell you for a fact. Two years ago, I asked why they would not open up both feeds of a game if they were already up on the satellite like Dish network does. They said it was not their policy to do that and that they had no plans to change their policy. I replied that I thought that wasn't very good business since if Dish could do it obviously they could do it, cancelled my Center Ice on D* and went with Dish that year. They still didn't care, obviously mindlessly following their stupid policies is more important than customer satisfaction. Unfortunately I am back with D* since they gave me all my HD equipment for free when I got an HDTV last year. I am pleasantly surprised at the number of games they have been putting on channel 95 though, I hope they put up a lot more playoff games than they did last year.
