Lets say you were dreaming (but unaware of the fact) and the situation is as follows. God descends from heaven and says to you "My child, you have spent the better part of your life researching, listening and reading about subs and trying to achieve that perfect bass in your home. Recommend me one that cannot be bested for my bedroom in the heavens. If I like your pick, you shall get the same one free!"

what would you pick ?

Now, when you say this, do you like a subwoofer system or do you mean a lone subwoofer all by itself? Also, does god mind large subwoofers?

A new SVS Dual ULTRA Subwoofer when they come out this year.

>God descends from heaven and says to you

Judging by most responses in this forum, I'd expect the answer to be, "Read the forum! Sheesh, *another* 'what should I get?' thread...."

Followed by needing to know the dimensions of God's bedroom...

Since we are are talking fantasy, how about an Infinite Baffle with 24 18 inch appropriately mounted drivers (you would need to leave your home !!)

I'd tell God to go to the next GTG at Art's house. That's assuming Art would invite him. :)

Dual JL Gothams with a Rotary thingy or huge IB for the <10hz stuff.

Dual TC Sounds monster subs presented at the 2007 CES. For HT

I am modest,no fancy subs just the basics. :p

I think God's bedroom size is not fixed. Thats just too human-ish for him ! It can be resized at the snap of his fingers... depending on whats best for the subwoofer you suggest. And since GOD doesnt have internet connection (or time to squander) he cant read forums ... which is probably why he will give a free sub :)

a little while later a bulb turns on in your head.... "hmm since i am getting a free sub, i might just recommend god to use what i desir most to have in my home theater!"

I'd probably say, "you need to purchase all the ones you are considering so you can listen in your own realm and decide for yourself. Then send back the ones you don't like and order another one for me." ;)

Am I going to Forum Hell for this?

I'd buy the local movie theater and outfit it with the latest in driver technology. :D

Seriously, I have all the money in the world (in my own little world), and bought a Plus/2 in oak because IMHO, it's the best sub for the money with the deepest, highest pure output for HT. I've not found a substitute for two 12" drivers in a large cabinet with triple ports for pure low end output. For HT, I could care less about 40Hz - 100Hz bass. My towers pick up from there.

If I was truely into music, I'd set up a dedicated two channel system in a spare room with towers that don't need to rely on a subwoofer for bass. ;)

Personally, I'd probably choose some (20) Wilson XS Passive subwoofers and each would be powered by a KRELL MRA. I'm sure that'd be quite an experience at maximum volume.

Ok

If I had all the money in the world I wouldn't even bother with a stand alone subwoofer...I would just hire whatever musicians and Hollywood studio types to perform live... and if they want to bring in 22 Bag Ends and recreate the soundtrack from Black Hawk Down...that would be ok with me.

Happy New Year

PS On the other hand...a hand full of Velodyne DD-18s in maple with the Thigpen Rotary would hold me till I found out what kind of subwoofers God prefers...

There is a link somewhere on this forum to someone's home who has a music room with an ib system that must have cost millions, I would probably buy that home.

I'd tell him you got 3 days to create something (it's just a sub after all) get hoppin.

Then I'd get zapped by lightning.....

I'd probably hire Tom Danley to do something custom...probably a home version of the Sonic Boom Cannon (131 db at 3hz) he did for the military. Probably put a couple of Thigpen Rotary woofers to cover that 1 hz to 3 hz range. Oh...and a structural engineer, a top notch acoustician and a and top notch contractor to build a building capable of holding it all...with a physician standing by just in case.

I didnt know SVS subs were so ultra high-end that they are good enough for God almighty!
From my reading of comparitive shootouts the SVS subs got slammed by the JL Audio, Velo, ACI , HSU....
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/printthread.php?t=768150&pp=60

Now there must be some money-no-object subs that relatively speaking make the fathom and velos sound like they were made by bose.

BTW... ephemere .. does that sub which looks like a couple of pillars sound as good or is it merely a "hot blonde" of a sub ? You dont wanna be trying to merely seduce God now do you :) ?

Ha ha! Actually, I've never heard them, but there are a bunch of folks out there who think that horn-loaded subwoofers offer the ultimate in bass. Unfortunately they end up needing to be so huge (the basshorns, not the people). I've heard Avantgarde's full-range horn speakers and they are extraordinary.

LOL at the people saying retail subs. Custom would be the only way to go... for God.
Thigpen rotary for the below 10hz stuff, a massive Infinite Baffle with say, 2000 18" drivers with 2 million watts of power. Cause, like, God rocks.

Wall to wall and floor to ceiling JL113 fathom's. And an infinite supply of ear drums. (Makes about as much sense as the thread)

I would choose them all and rotate them out every couple months getting the latest and greatest. Of course this fantasty stuff is all predicated on the fact that I would have a large theater room as well. :)

I think those TC Sounds monsters from CES would have to be my first pick for the wow/cool factor though. They look awesome!

With all the money in the world, I would have an all custom design by Joseph D'Appolito, Mark Seaton, or someone highly regarded within the speaker/subwoofer design industry.

I certainly wouldn't be buying something off the shelf. :-)

I would pay some guys who knew what they were doing to install 4 ET TRW (modify the house in any way possible to maximize performance and minimize neighborhood leak), and Id get 4 JL Gothams.

I already own four of them. The Bassmaxx ZR18 in custom-built cabinets. I already considered the Wilson XS, Eminent Technology Rotary and Acoupower woofers. The Bassmaxx has the lower distortion and decent enough efficiency that you don't have to live near Hoover Dam to power it. :)

7 DD18's for each channel
1 DD18 for LFE 50hz to 80hz
2 SVS Ultras for LFE 50hz and below (tuned to 10hz)

Holy COW!!!
Either that or I'd go with about 15 of the 22" MTX jackhammers for the sub 25Hz stuff, and then cross over to about 10-15" high quality drivers, crossing over again to about 25-10 inchers for the lower midbass, dividing up an entire house for the various needed enclosure volumes.I reckon somewhere around 185,000 watts would do.

Hard to believe a sub selling for $3500 does NOT have balanced inputs.
