View Full Version : *** The LG BH100 HD Super Multi Blue Player *** official owner's thread
shawnmos 11-19-08, 06:28 PM So I just got this unit to maintain my HD DVD collection, while being able to play my BDs as well.
How do I update it? Is there just a firmware I download to a disc?
Go here: http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp and search for BH100.
The latest version is disc_update_080624a_kernel_0203a.zip
Extract the zip file and burn the cd image using a program like ImgBurn. Make sure you burn it as an image. Don't just copy the iso file onto the disc. Also don't burn at the fastest speed. 16x or 24x max.

Thanks. I didn't know if I had to burn it to a disc or not or if I had to upgrade it some other way. I upgraded without any issue.
So is there a log or something that says what the upgrades enhances/fixes?
dirty_haris 11-20-08, 04:16 PM If I am not wrong, there is a status screen.

My LG-BH100 also won't play "Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull", it too won't let me get past the language selection menu on disc 1.
I emailed LG UK customer support, and they replied saying:
"Based on the information you have provided there may be a fault with your unit.
Please call our Customer Service Department on 0844 847 1400. A Customer Service agent will take your details and advise on how to arrange a service on the unit. Please be advised the warranty period on this unit is 12 months.
Please ensure you have the model number, serial number and the proof of purchase ready for the agent.
If your unit is not in warranty, you can locate a service centre local to you at www.ukasc.co.uk"
Not a lot of help there then, as other members are having the same problem, it's clearly a firmware issue, and the sooner LG create a fix, the better.

My BH100 played that disc just fine. And that was with Firmware from last Febuary. Have you updated your player with the June Firmware?
nashou66 11-24-08, 11:27 PM Mine played KOCS fine also.

Contact again LG and say them that other people has the same problem, with the same blu ray, and they already had contacted LG. I hope that they understand the problem and fix it quickly! I can't wait more!:D
Sorry for my English!
Nashou & Rutgar, it's interesting that you both don't have any playback issues with Indiana Jones over in the States, yet over here in Europe we DO.
Maybe there are two differently authored discs for the US and Europe.
My disc has the the following number printed on it:
EU113608 BV
and when inserted into my player will run the Paramount Hi-Def animation O.K, but then changes to the language screen and although it will allow you to cursor up & down to highlight any of the langauges, it won't let you press O.K to enter the selection, thus stops you from proceeding to play the disc.
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn105/reebspics/bh100indiana.jpg
Chapter advance, fast forward, Play, & even direct number entry will not do anything other than produce the Red "No Go" symbol.
I'm currently running the latest firmware "080624a" - June 08, & have even tried rolling back to previous versions - the last was "070503" - May 07, but it made no difference.
Will you guys in America check the disc number and tell me if you get EXACTLY the same language menu screen on your discs, that way I'll be able to tell if you have the same disc over there as we have here.
If they are different, I may have to import the American version in order to get it to play.

have you contacted LG?
ondowan 12-03-08, 07:29 AM I´ve contacted lg spain and they said there must be a tecnical problem with the unit...and i know there is nothing wrong with the hardware, it´s clearly a software problem.
so, still waiting for the right firmware....
Is it possible to downgrade the unit?
Did they mention anything about a newer firmware update for BH100?
As far as Indy 4 goes, it sounds like a Eurpoean disc problem.
ondowan 12-03-08, 09:49 AM nothing about a new firmware...
Indy 4 european edition played fine in my BH100 with firm 071101a...but no matrix trilogy
Jahlman 12-03-08, 12:14 PM I am looking for troubleshooting assistance with an existing client's setup.
We are using an LG BH100 Bluray player for the living room tv (hdmi), the bedroom tv (rgb), and a bathroom tv (composite thru Russound CAV6.6). (Yes, I know we are asking alot, but it was an existing design). The issue is that the dvd picture cuts out very intermittently to the bedroom tv, while the sound works fine. We are sending the rgb video thru a Key Digital switch KDCSW2x1 along w/Directv HD to a 65" Sharp LC65SE94 while the audio goes thru the Russound CAV6.6 to a pair of in wall speakers. The client can switch back to Directv with his MX850 and has no issues. When he goes back to dvd he gets sound but no picture. Meanwhile, the bathroom and living room tvs show dvd pic/sound fine. We recently performed a firmware upgrade on the BH100 hoping that would solve the issue. The issue also only seems to be in regards to Bluray. Coincidentally, the issue first happened after we replaced the existing Pioneer Elite PRO1000HD with the Sharp. The only thing I can think to do next is to swap out the RGB cables going from the BH100 to the Key Digital switch. Any thoughts or other questions? Thanks, Jay.
Jon Spackman 12-03-08, 01:11 PM Try unhooking HDMI temporraily to see if that helps. It may be that the BH100 is not spec'd to display HDMI and component video at the same time. Some devices do it, others will but not very solid. you can always use component for the tv in the main room and skip hdmi on it altogether.
Yep, I can confirm that by rolling back the firmware to 071101a my deck will let me play the European disc of Indy 4 now :)
This is a good work around for those who can't currently watch the movie.
When you've seen it, you can reload the latest firmware once more.
Lets hope LG will get round to releasing another update for European owners, so we don't have to keep doing this.

Not just for European Indy 4, but also for U.S. Firefly, and from what I hear, Band of Brothers.
What sucks, is that if LG doesn't do this promptly, I'm going to just have to bite the bullet and buy a new Blu-ray player.
Jahlman 12-04-08, 02:21 PM I checked the BH100 manual and it doesn't say either way about utilizing multiple video outputs. What's doesn't make sense is that this setup worked flawlessly for over a year with a Pioneer Elite Pro1000HD in the bedroom. The issue showed up within a couple of weeks. I was wrong about it only being bluray discs. It happened on a burned disc last night. It's been about two weeks since the last occurrence. The picture usually cuts out when there is only about 10-20 minutes left in the movie. Up to that point it works fine. Also, the customer states that the "Input 1" tv label comes up just before the entire screen goes blue, not black. I forgot to mention that.
Jahlman 12-04-08, 05:04 PM I just got off the phone with Sharp and the tech said the tv is performing a 'channel search' and to unplug the tv while it is on, wait 30 minutes, and plug it back in and that should 'resync' the tv. Any truth to what he is saying? Anyone done that before? When we go out to the house I will certainly give it a shot.
knightl 12-07-08, 04:12 PM my bh100 with the latest firmware update will not play x-files i want to believe.
i get a circle of circles on the bottom of the tv and the player says menu on the readout, then the readout goes to chapter 1 and the pulsing bar is in the middle of the tv screen. eventually the bar goes away and the movie never plays. anyone else have issues with this title?
shawnmos 12-07-08, 09:03 PM Well you aren't missing much. That movie was awful. Anyway that movie took about 3-4 minutes to load on my Samsung BD-UP5000. I think that's the longest I've ever had to wait to watch a Blu-ray movie. Even my roommate was wondering what the hell was going on. And what was the wait for? Some stupid fancy menu that adds absolutely nothing to the movie. This is typical of Fox. Overpriced, poorly or non-performing discs.

i also have the up5000 and it worked, eventually, the word "interactive" popped up on the display a couple of times. my guess is that is what is hosing the bh100. the million dollar question is, are more disks going to behave this way, obsoleting the bh100?
shawnmos 12-08-08, 11:02 AM Well I would hope not. This player isn't even 2 years old yet and was $1000 new. It would be pretty ****** of LG to not continue to provide firmware updates for at least another year or two.

what we need to do is set a date where we all flood LG with emails about
this problem. post it also on other sites wehre other LG owners also would see it, or somehow get one of the online magazines to do a write up about it to get recognition out that companies can not abandon owners of players that first introduced the format, we are the early adoptors and should be rewarded with updates.

PS where is samsungmaster been he has the inside scoop with LG.
I have already emailed LG about this, but haven't received a response.
It's starting to look more and more like I'm going to have to just break down and buy a new BD player.
mercurythewhite 12-11-08, 10:24 AM I've read through the myriad pages but saw nothing definite that says a U.S. player can play Region B blu-rays. Has this been confirmed? I am trying to avoid paying for the BH 200 because playing Region B discs is my only concern.
Thanks!!

Ok, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the BH100 is region free. However most Blu-ray players aren't. So if you can to play a region B disc on the BH100 is should work, but if you have other US Blu-ray players it's not going to work.
solardee 12-11-08, 10:50 PM Is there any way to play a BD-R or BD-RE on the BH100? Would a firmware update make this possible?

Has anyone here had any contact with LG about a new firmware update for this unit to address these new discs that won't play on it? I emailed LG last week, but never got a response.
Firstpersoni 12-13-08, 07:40 PM Is there a new firmware update out yet? I just bought the Dark Knight and it would play and it had a sticker on it saying I may need a firmware update. I downloaded the latest one on the LG site and no luck.
Can anyone help me out?

I'm confused. Are you saying that Dark Knight won't play or that it will?
vinnie97 12-13-08, 08:28 PM I'm pretty sure would was a typo and he meant "wouldn't."
Rutgar, I'd avoid any LG Blu-ray players in the future if that's the kinda' support you're getting (no response after a week). While Samsung may have a dodgy history of support, they are still providing updates for 1st gen hardware (BD-P1000) as of December 2008.
Just to update you on the Indy 4 Blu-Ray issue.
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn105/reebspics/indy4bluray-1.jpg
I can confirm that the US release (pictured on the left) DOES play perfectly on the BH-100, but the European disc (pictured on the right) DOES NOT.
I have reluctantly now changed my BH100 for a Sony BD 550 player, and when comparing the two versions, there is no difference in content to either disc.
The only thing that makes them different (apart from the packaging), is that the European one presents you first with a "Choose Language" menu screen which you can't get past. (unless you roll back to much earlier firmware- see earlier posts).
I too never heard anything more from LG customer services after the initial "your player must have a fault" line.
Rutgar, I'd avoid any LG Blu-ray players in the future if that's the kinda' support you're getting (no response after a week).
All BH100 owners are getting screwed with this kind of lack of support, if LG doesn't come out with a new firmware update to address these issues. That's 4 or 5 current new releases that people are having trouble with. Yet, I took them to Best Buy, and they all play fine on a Denon unit, and even the cheapo Panasonic.
vinnie97 12-14-08, 07:22 AM Hey, the new Panasonics are excellent players! :p
shawnmos 12-14-08, 01:19 PM I agree about the Panasonics. They are some of the best players out right now. I have the Dark Knight. I'll test it in the BH100 later today and report back.
I'm not knocking the Panasonic. I'm knocking the BH100.

Well I've just tried my copy, and it took just over a minute for the white spinning disc symbol to complete loading up the disc, then it went straight into play without any trouble.
If you are in another country to me, maybe (like Indy 4), there is a difference in authoring between the U.K version & other territories.
I'm using a British bought BH-100, with the British Warner Home Video 2-disc edition of "The Dark Knight".
It may also be that your disc is slightly damaged / faulty and your BH-100 is struggling to read all the data properly.
shawnmos 12-14-08, 04:59 PM The Dark Knight works fine. I am watching it right now.
bigdog5142 12-14-08, 10:49 PM I've got a question for all you BH100 owners! I just purchased a BH100 on Ebay for about $140. Works like a charm. (I sold my 360, so I needed a combo player.) Anyway...I'm having issues with DTS audio sync. Dolby 5.1 works just fine on any format, but DTS has an audio sync issue in any format. Pretty bad, too. I have the BH100 connected via an HDMI cable to my TV and an optical cable to my receiver. My receiver is a JVC that has DTS and Dolby decoders on board. It's an older receiver.
Any suggestions?
(I've upgraded to the newest firmware on the LG site already.)

Not sure why that is happening, but I would recommend that you use the analog connections to connect to your receiver and let the player decode. Not only will you be able to get Dolby Digital and DTS, but you will also be able to listen to LPCM and TrueHD tracks which are much better quality.

I had the same problem with my (Australian) copy of Iron Man. The way I got around it was pressing stop twice (to get to real stop, not stop pause) and then selecting the Disc Menu. That seems to jump past the choose language problem.
Haven't got indy to try though so it's just a guess (I'm running the latest firmware)

So...you're saying to connect the player to my receiver via analog? What cable is that? I thought the only way to get 5.1 surround was through an optical cable? I guess that's wrong? Is it the analog coax cable you're speaking of?
bigdog5142 12-16-08, 01:44 PM Okay...I get it. The player actually has individual 5.1 analog out. I'm not sure if my receiver has analog 5.1 in. Does this work as well as the digital? I'm a bit skeptical/nervous about doing that. No loss of sound quality?

Just use 3 pairs of quality stereo cables. Quality should be superior to optical when listening to a TrueHD track. Make sure you adjust the settings in the player though for 5.1 analog out.
lizardhowson 12-16-08, 11:50 PM I bought one of these from Best Buy. It has been a piece of junk from the get go !
I have done all the firmware updates.
It stopped sending a signal thru the HDMI cable, so I contacted LG customer support. Somehow, I was STUPID enough to send them $69 for labor and the unit. The repair tech called me but had no idea about anything. He claimed it just needed a software update. It came back still broken.
So I sent it back a 2nd time. They called again, claimed they replaced the circuit or motherboard. Anyway, now, when you put in a Blue Ray DVD, there is no sound. Regular DVD's play the sound. HDMI still doesn't work.
It's sitting in my basement getting dusty with less than a year of use. Replaced with a good Sony unit.
By the way, I have had terrible luck with all LG products (Bad washer couple of months old, actually a replacement for the first LG washer which flooded the floor 1st time I turned it on).
I will NEVER buy anything LG again !

If so... Where's the sorely needed firmware update for the BH100 for all these new BD titles it won't play?!?!? :p

Hi Guys,
Has anyone tried the Dark Knight and Batman Returns Blu Rays on the BH100?
I'm keen to buy it but not if it's a problem disk.
Thanks
Camds
Dark Knight BD playes fine on mine. I have no idea about Batman Returns. Unless of course, you're really talking about Batman Begins. And in that case, I have the HD-DVD, which plays fine.
I emailed LG again today about a new firmware update. Still no response.

You can try this if you have no sound on bluray, go to setup/display/16:9/with the remote type these numbes 1,3,9,7,1,3,9,enter. You shoud see the system information screen, push the pause button to reset the unit, then reinstall the latest firmware.
theedge33 12-21-08, 03:17 PM I just purchased the new x files movie and I cannot get it to play. I have updated my firmware the most recent on lg's site. The only thing that happens is a little dotted wheel shows up at the bottom of the screen and spins around. was wondering if anyone else had the same issue?
GizmoDVD 12-21-08, 03:56 PM A friend of mine watched both X-Files films on his LG 200 and had no issues (that I know of). Did you try hitting MENU or the SKIP CHAPTER buttons a few times?

This is the LG100 thread.
Jackieboy84 12-21-08, 05:36 PM I got the dark knight but needed to update the bh100 to play it. I downloaded the update and it installed it and turned off the power after ejecting the disc. I took the disc out and turned it on and it stayed on the lg logo while the display window scrolled please wait. I called support but since it is over a year old and since I bought it used they wouldn't be able to repair it. I'm thinking I should be able to reset it but don't know how. I never get to the main menu so the 1,3,9,7 trick won't work. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

When a unit gets stuck on please wait generally the mainboard is toast.
ctreesh 12-21-08, 06:49 PM I just got the Dark Knight but it wont play on my BH100.
Can someone tell me what file I need to download where to get it? I can't seem to find anything on LG's website since Aug 2007 in terms of firmware for the BH100.
Jackieboy84 12-21-08, 07:00 PM So if the mainboard is toast there's no way I can fix it?
shawnmos 12-21-08, 07:01 PM That is the most recent update unfortunately. However, the dark knight works with that firmware.
theedge33 12-21-08, 08:17 PM there is a new update that i downloaded today. I had no problem with the dark knight, worked great. the only one i have had issues with is this x files movie, currently i have a black screen, nothing happening.

I just checked. There is no new firmware update. The latest one is still the one from last June.

Is there anything I can do to try and reset it? I've got it taken apart but haven't had any luck. Any way to force a hard reset?

you could always try to pick up a broken bh100 with a bad drive on ebay and swap out the mainboard.

Whenever the unit is stuck on please wait after a firmware update, usually the flash became corrupted during the process, not much you can do other than have the board repaired.

Actually I had that happen to my LG BH100 also, the please wait... screen scrolled for hours without logging in...sent it in for repair and was told it would cost $900 to replace the power supply? ~ I was actually sent a BH200 for $200 to replace the unrepairable BH100. I've still got the BH100 and plan on replacing the power supply board with another in hopes it fixes the problem, so I can sell it. The boards seem very simple to replace after opening mine up.

Most likely it is not the power supply, you can replace it if you want but this is a mainboard issue.
shawnmos 12-22-08, 03:47 PM I really doubt it's the power supply.
theedge33 12-22-08, 06:48 PM where do you find the date these firmware upgrades were released on lg's website?
It's in the number. For example:
disc_update_080624a_kernel_0203a.zip
The '080624', translate to June 24, 2008.
The first 2 numbers are the year. The next 2 are the month. And the last 2 are the day.
oscar_in_fw 12-23-08, 12:05 AM Just another couple of data points:
"For Your Eyes Only" won't ever get to the main menu with the LG (I forget which firmware but I haven't updated this since this past Summer). I borrowed one of the new Sony SDP-550s to try out and we were able to play the movie; so it looks like my LG could use a new firmware update.
Also, with the Sony, I was able to play uncompressed PCM and DTS HD Master audio tracks at more "boisterous" levels than when playing the same tracks with the LG using the player's 5.1 analog audio outputs. This suggests to me the amp reset issues I have been having may have had more to do with the LG decoding/DACs than the amp/speaker combo . At least I'll have a little more confidence the next Blu-ray player (Pioneer Elite/Denon/marantz??) I buy will not display the same audio issues I've had with the LG.
bigdog5142 12-23-08, 10:17 PM I got the Band of Brothers Blu-Ray set and discs 2-5 tell me that the disc won't play because the region code of the player is not compatible. Discs 1 & 6 play fine, but 2-5 do not. It also looks like the X-Files movie won't play, either. This is turning out to be a real piece of crap machine.
bigdog5142 12-24-08, 11:17 AM I went to Best Buy and found a Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-Ray player for $140. I'm getting rid of the BH100 and I'll either sell by HD-DVD's and replace them with Blu-Ray's or spend $50 on a HD-DVD player. It's ridiculous that there hasn't been a new firmware in months and when you call LG, they treat you like you're an idiot!
cinema mad 12-25-08, 12:03 AM Unfortunatly this is the biggest issue (achilles heel) with Blu-Ray, It pays to go with A Blu-Ray player manufacturer that releases constant firmware updates like Panasonic And Sony's PS3 and unlike Samsung who are slow to release firmware updates..
It is to do with the 128 bit incription on the Blu-Ray disk, Blu-Ray's incription key can change (Movie to Movie) unlike HD-DVD's 128 bit fixed incription key...
Movie Company's like Disney and Warner Bros are the two main offenders constantly changing the 128 bit incription Key on there NEW Release BlockBuster thus if the Blu-Ray Players firmware is not constantly revised to match the incription on the Disney Blu-Ray movie it will not play/work....
Hope this Helps Cheers....

Actually HD DVDs encryption keys changed too. The issues we are having now have to do with BD+ which is different.
I have now changed my machine for a Sony BDP 550 player, so my Multi-region LG BH100 is currently available for sale in the Southampton Branch of CEX for £345.00 if anyone is looking to buy one.

theedge33 12-27-08, 09:59 AM I am running into the same issue with band of brothers, does anyone have a possible solution? Disc1 plays fine but then the others say my dvd player is not setup to play these region discs...ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I don't really understand the cash/exchange part of your ad. But to me, £345.00 sounds a bit high for a used BH100 that everyone knows won't play many of the newer BDs.

CEX is a UK chain store & on-line site for people who want to buy / sell used hardware & software.
I wanted to sell my BH100 without the hassle of putting it on ebay, so the store offered me £250.00 of store credit for the unit (instead of £172 cash).
They now own it, and have put it up for sale at £345.00, which may be a little steep, but it is still a great player, and I'm sure a firmware update will be released eventually.
I simply posted the link, for anyone wanting to get there hands on a good multi-region BD & HD-DVD machine, for information only, as I no longer have any connection with it.

Really? When? It's been 6 months since the last update, and at this moment, there is no indication from LG that there will another one.
theedge33 01-06-09, 03:57 PM I just spoke to LG, they say there is a new update that is not on their website, you must call them to get it. They say that it resolves the issues with the new movies. Good idea nashou66. I went ahead and did the same. Only, I asked for the BH100 firmware update.
I asked the guy why the update wasn't posted. He said that too many customers have had problems d/l and getting it to work that way. Reading between the lines, I'm guessing too many people were mucking up their players doing it wrong, and then having to send the units back to LG.

I knew that would happen eventually, I don't understand why these large companies would not make the process of updating firmware non volatile,
so it can not ruin the player. you'd think they have much less liability that way.
Athanasios
vinnie97 01-07-09, 11:14 AM I can't think of any firmware-upgradeable electronic product that provides a nonvolatile means of updating the firmware. :)

Actually Gigabyte makes computer motherboards that have a secondary (backup) bios chip. Unlike most motherboards, if you flash the bios and something goes wrong you can press something when booting up the computer which allows you to boot off the secondary bios. Then you can reapply the update to the primary bios. Any other motherboard would be bricked.
I don't know why more CE manufacturers don't do something like this. It would increase costs but I doubt it would be by much. They should at least offer it on the higher end blu-ray players.
vinnie97 01-07-09, 12:14 PM That's an excellent feature and hopefully one that catches on across the rest of the CEMs and products.

so has anyone installed this firmware update?
i called and asked for it, and the csr asked me what movie i was having trouble playing. i said i wasn't having an issue, i just wanted to keep my player up to date with firmware. she said she could only send out the updates with a problem movie title attached to the request. it made it sound like there are different firmware updates depending on the movie. ????
vinnie97 01-09-09, 06:29 AM It sounds more to me like an effort to limit damage control (and/or expense on their part to send out discs) for those who might accidentally brick their players during the upgrade. They're limiting it to those only having problems. Lame but thems the breaks. It will surely be upgraded to the LG site in due time, though.

Huh... the guy I talked to didn't ask me anything about particular movies. He just took my information and said they would get it sent out.
FYI: the current discs I have that won't play are - Firefly: Disc 3, and Band of Brothers: All discs except Disc 1.

Sorry, I thought I was on the BH200 thread, the BH200 software is posted on the LG site, the BH100 update is not ready yet.
Okay. Add the BD of 'Serenity' to the list of discs that won't play.
sl@cker 01-11-09, 05:41 PM I just called LG customer service and asked about the new firmware. They said they do have it, and he asked me which movies hadn't been working. Alien vs Predator: Requiem and Death Race are two blu-ray movies I've seen where the audio is poppy, then the movie freezes up. So he got that info, and my phone# and address and the firmware is being sent out to me.
oscar_in_fw 01-12-09, 11:11 AM Just got the Roy Orbison Blu-ray and the soundtrack keeps getting "crackly" at times when using the analog outputs (DTS HD or 2-channel PCM); I haven't tried using the optical output yet. It's looking more and more like a new player is needed.
OTOH, Wouldn't every other player on the market have the same firmware update issues because of Fox's $%#&#*^@ lame attempts at "updating" their "digital management" BD+ crap ?!
Oscar, I'm still waiting for the latest disc from LG. I will post here when I get it, and if it is indeed newer than the current update from last June on LG's web site.

http://www.blu-ray.com/firmware/firmware.php?id=17
Someone tried the BH200 firmware on his BH100 and it appeared to work and sort out the new discs. I guess for those brave enough to try might not be bad idea.
He says it even brought the Ethernet to life ! If indeed this firmware does work on the BH100 then it breathes new life into the machine no ?
The old RMTM discs for the BH200 for example seem to work on the BH100 so there is some plausibility to this.
shawnmos 01-17-09, 06:24 PM I don't buy it. They don't even have the same chipset.
ekko star 01-17-09, 06:28 PM I guess the BH100 will simply just spit out the disc if it didn't like it then. Might be worth a try....for the brave.
ekko star 01-17-09, 07:35 PM The other thing is the firmware that modifies the BH200 into SD multi-region works on the BH100 as well.
nashou66 01-18-09, 12:56 AM it might work, i dont think the HDCP stuff is on the broadcom or Marvel chip set's. i think all of programing stuff is on some FPGA that works in conjuction with the main Video processing chips. It is a gutsy move to try it, and it might work. The LGBh100 has a secong Chip not in use, may said this chip might be for the hD interactive stuff and was disabled by LG when thye did not get the license for HD DVD, so it is possible that
the extra chip also controls the LAN and other aspects of the Player. I might be adventurous and try it. Hmmm Maybe Samsung master would no more, and it could be manufacture date sensitive.
Athansios
shawnmos 01-18-09, 01:00 AM Well if someone wants to try it, let us know what happens. It would be nice to have HDi working.
shawnmos 01-18-09, 01:13 AM Does anyone have any internal pics of the BH200? Does it use the same drive? Cause the BH100 uses a real SATA drive. I'm guessing the biggest difference between the two is the drive.
I have a bunch of pics here: http://www.flickr.com/search/show/?q=bh100&w=27928453%40N08&ss=2&ct=6
robert007 01-18-09, 10:08 AM I just tried to run the DVD with the BH200 updated. Mine unit said "disc error" and spat it out. so no HDi, no DTS HD, no BluRay multiregion along with the DVDs. Other then that works just fine. regs
nashou66 01-18-09, 01:41 PM Hmmm, if Handawg on the Blu Ray forum is not a hoax then there must be something he did, maybe not knowing, to have it work.
I remember there was a short discussion here about that second chip being activated for at least HDi and samsung master "hinted" that it could be done if some one "knew where to look" So maybe there is a sequence that has to be done, Handog said he tried the three BH100 discs that LG sent them and they did not work, maybe he was wrong and one did work or did something to free up the firmware update mode to allow the BH200 disc to work when he tried that later?
I joined that forum and posted for more details and also sent him an E-mail from that forum. I wonder if the handawg is real or just an enigma.
I may try the update too and just get another cheap BH100 from eBay and keep it for a second mother board and parts.

nashou66 01-18-09, 01:58 PM I wish there were Schematics for these machines available. Id like to see the programable chips used, if they are the same between both machines I be tit be easy to get an Eprom reader writer and copy the chip from the bh200 and put it on new chip then put that chip into the Bh100. I bet thats all it is and once the BH100 Eprom gets zaped with the info for the BH200 it basically will become that machine. But since the BH200 has not Analog audio outs i wonder if the BH100 will then looser the analog out capabilities. This is definitely something i wish the more tech and programing guys here would try. I always wanted to get one of those Eprom reader writers for some other things i read about.

robert007 01-19-09, 05:07 PM Well, I might be doing somethnig wrong. My BH100 is running on the latest firmware (SW Ver: BH01080624A/PKG114), so I've just downloaded the BH200 software packs (both the US and intenational versions) and according to the LG manual created data DVD (for the 100 update it must have been ISO image - I think it is a different type of disc). And mine bh100 spat it out :(. But I like it anyway... regs

Yes, it looks like it's changed. But I can no longer make heads or tales of the updates. It looks like they changed the numbers. So if they're new, I don't know which one to D/L and use.
nashou66 01-19-09, 05:48 PM I downloaded the first one on the list and its the old 08' update :(
Nothing New but they did change the look so maybe something new is upcoming?

PS: I also found the Schematics for 10 bucks, its a djvu file. I will upload it to my hosting site for down load.
It has a nice block diagram for trouble shooting and also has the waveforms to look for with a scope and the points to probe.
Also it does look like there is a separate FGPA that gets programed, looks like ti does have to go through the Broadcom chip(s), Then it goes tot he RJ45 jack. So that Handawg might have got it to work some how. They also talk about the Eprom menu but do not give what letters or numbers to use or what setting they are for. I need to look though it better.
nashou66 01-19-09, 06:10 PM here is the link to the LG BH100 Service manual, if some one can use this to firgure out how to flash the Eprom to use the BH200 Frimwear or enable the second Broadcom chip it be great!!!

nashou66 01-20-09, 12:13 AM Ok here is my theory on the post above about the guy who got the BH200 Firmware to work on his BH100 and why Robert007, BH200 Disc did not work.
Some BH100's have the two Broadcom chips and some have one. it depends on when it was made. You also may find out by the RJ45 jack on the back some say service others say ethernet. I think that Handawg has an early unit with the two chips and Robert007 may have the single chip unit, and thats why his did not work.
here is a conversation bradavon had with an LG employee:
I've been chatting with an LG employee over PM and here is what they've said. It mixes between the BH100 and BH200:
LG Employee: Some people may be able to unlock a lot more since the BH100's made dec06~april06 contain to broadcom IC's. I think it was May07 they took the extra one off the board. Anyway the BH100's that have 2, one of them is disabled. And the one that is disabled what does it do? Maybe a little something to do with HD.
Bradavon: are you abbreviating HD-DVD to HD and mean HDi was included but disabled?
Any idea why kit sold in The Americas has PAL disabled by default? Sure I know nothing in The America is in PAL but it still seems odd when it's so easy to enable/disable it. Why not just leave it enabled?
Lastly, is there any way to do any long term damage by altering any of the values in the EEPROM menu? Presumably you can always put it back to defaults? I just don't want to go bricking a BH200 by tinkering too much.
LG Employee: PAL is just disabled since it is sold in North America. It is easier to just disable it via the menu, remember these are made on an assembly line so when they are making them for a certain region they just change the options in the menu for that run of units.
No long term damage, this is how it is done in the factory.
I guess I should put a word of caution about changing the menu numbers. There is a chance of bricking a unit. I do not have a list of numbers that will do this so just a word of caution for everyone. For people who have the ability to return the unit to a store for exchange, no fears change the menu to whatever you like and see what happens.
For legal reasons the extra IC was disabled. This was the only way the BH100 could be sold. You may thank the battle between bluray and HD for that one. Neither one of them wanted a player that could do both. Of course differences were worked out so to speak and the BH200 was able to do HDi.
The "service port" on the back of the BH100 is not for service. It was just called a service port again for legal reasons. In reality it is an ethernet port. You normally do not see service ports with link lights. A few Dec07 units do say ethernet instead of service, if anyone has one of these, a collectors item
Bradavon: Any idea what Julio Cohen has done here to achieve SD DVD MR? - http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1010650
It's been confirmed this hack doesn't alter the values in the EEPROM menu.
LG Employee: Now what Julio did looks like a region code hack program. You can download these just do a google search. I am not sure if he modified an existing hack program so it would work with the BH200 or if he just took an existing program and just used it and it worked. Either way like I was saying before I am quite surprised nobody has done this sooner.
Man if we could find the original programing to enable the second broadcom chip........... I alway wanted to hook up the ethernet port to my router and see if it was visible. But with out the software enabled in the unit it wont help much, maybe we can send emails asking LG to now enable the second chip and the ethernet port for those who have these units. I knbow they most likly wont but its worth a shot.

So Robert007 can you check your manufacture date? and the RJ45 jack.
Athanasios
My build date is Feb 2007. And the port says Service. So mine is past the target date.
Jahlman 01-20-09, 11:20 AM I swapped out the RGB from the bluray to the switch. I rebooted the switch per Key Digital. I rebooted the tv per Sharp. I also swapped dvd and sat going into the switch. The customer then called and said he was having the same issue (sound, no pic) from satellite and no longer dvd. We then swapped out the switch for a new one, rebooted it, put the inputs back to the original configuration, and he just called to say that dvds are cutting out again. It seems to happen more frequently and last for a shorter time however, Any thoughts? I can't think it could be anything else. I may have to try a Gefen switcher instead.

nashou66 01-20-09, 01:46 PM Ok I just did the latest up date on my BH200, worked. then i tried it on my BH100 as Handawg did who said it worked, nope , disc just opened the drawer.
So I think its a hoax. But i still think if soemone who is a programer may find a way to activate the secong chip, i bet that has the ethernet availability in it.

i was able some months ago to enable the ethernet port of my bh100.
internally its a full working ethernet port, not only for service. LG just
don't assign a IP address to the interface during the boot process, so
its not visible in the network. after setting this address its possible to log into the box.

Who knows. It's been two weeks since I was supposed to be sent a disc with the latest firmware. Haven't seen it yet. I don't really have any faith in it though, even if it does arrive, since someone else said the disc they got contained the previous update from June.
travt-down 01-25-09, 04:41 AM Just received and watched The Third Man from Netflix on blu ray. It is the first br release from Criterion and am glad to say it works. It is slow as all get out on my BH100, but with the latest firmware, all is good. Let's just hope that any future more modern Criterion blu rays with more advaced audio will work. The menus of the Third Man are pretty complicated and I am glad that I was able to access all the features (even if it was slow).

Yes, there's a couple of movies with "odd" behavior (e.g. buzzing/squeels) with DTS HD MA tracks, the latest being the Roy Orbison blu-ray. It's a good reason why I'm itching to ditch the BH-100 in favor of a Blu-ray player which can properly decode DTS HD MA.

travt-down 01-31-09, 05:00 AM If anyone is serious about buying a (or a few) BH-100's for cheap look on ebay. A very established seller has had tons (but no remote). Just go to eBay and type 'lg bh100' in the search box and look for the 2ndturn auctions. Play the eBAy game right and you might score one for a bit over $100. Not bad if you ask me.
And no, I have no connection with the store; it's merely where I scored mine.
oscar_in_fw 01-31-09, 12:17 PM "Ditch" as in relegate to HD DVD only playback only or move to the (Currently non-existent) Bedroom system. It's still a useful player; I'm looking to replace it with a $2k player with solid 6/8 channel analog outputs but I'm taking my time.

"This is a new firmware that was release at the end of December, beginning of January, and it is not available in the website yet."
So it is a new one :)

I'm on a waiting list I guess, to get sent the new firmware. Here is info they gave me in an email about it:
"
The firmware has been requested since January 11th, 2009 but we have a waiting list and we are processing the requests in the order we are receiving them. I dont think a firmware upgrade will fix that prob. Were you trying to eject whist a movie was playing? It does take a bit if you are playing a BR disc especially.

LG are being utter dicks about taking away previously working features on their first and second gen BD players...they probably consider that a "fix" due to not securing the licensing. I would steer VERY clear from them here on out.
nashou66 02-10-09, 06:57 AM The thing that keeps me with the BH200 is the Qdeo Chip, this chip is a real winner, the high end Pioneer also has this. I think that is more than enough for me. I had the samsung and it was not as nice a picture on my marquee 8500, on a 12 foot screen....with a really big picture is where you can really see the differences. On a smaller LCD or Plasma its hard to compare the two.

I wonder if that "glitchy/cracky" effect isn't an artifact of a defective DTS decoder chip which has been suggested as a source of problems with other players ?
I almost always used the BH100s 5.1 analog outputs in my system and I've always had the occasional problem with "glitchy/crackly" audio DTS audio soundtracks. I don't recall any issues on the few times I used the optical output to let a pre/pro do the decoding. So far, I haven't had any "glitchy/crackly" issues with the Sony BDP-S550 I acquired to do the DTS HD MA decoding.
I also had the occasional issues with DTS and uncompressed PCM soundtracks triggering the amps' protection circuits shutting me down. It might have been (400 W) amps not being able to "deliver" on transient peaks into speaker loads but it was happening at "relatively low" sound levels and hasn't happened (yet) with the new player.

Not that much of a big deal. I am a huge X-Files fan and am just fine with my much cheaper SD version. Good seeing Mulder and Scully together, but the film was mediocre at best.
But anyways. It seems Fox releases have a bad track record on blu-ray. I am sitting with fingers crossed that the Fox Searchlight film Slumdog Millionaire works when it releases March 31st. My favorite movie of the past few years.
Also. Can anyone clarify if 28 Days Later or No Country For Old Men work? The 'Will not play' thread has gotten a bit messy.
greycellgreen 02-27-09, 06:00 AM I've had No Country for Old Men work perfectly.
I just got Oliver Stone's "W" in BR. The playback is glitchy. It took several attempts to get it to boot up properly and then about 1/3 through it just started freezing and skipping. Finally it stopped.
Not sure if it's a bad disc or if there is a problem with the playback on the LG. Anyone else having this problem?
BTW I installed the recent FW update.
thanks.

One word, HDMI !!!! it sucks!!! I wish they kept it on a DVI cable but those damn Installers got aggravated trying to run them through walls and Schit so they bugged and bugged till they got the smaller HDMI cable. Also manufactures can make the cases smaller utilizing them. One reason they stink is you can really get a good connection, tis always loose and never fits tight. i was getting glitchy video and I knew it wasn't the Bh100 so I opened up the case and desoldered the HDMI connection and added a better type that has a tighter Squeeze on the pins of the cable. This is not an easy task so i do not recommend people to try it unless they know what they are doing. A company has just come out with a locking system and I hope all the new products and cable makers adopt this as the standard. It is more like the old DVI where it gets locked in. I was going to put a DVI connector tot he BH100 since i use the analog outs but i found that connector was good enough for now.
But you can try to look into the back of the HDMI connector and there are some small tabs that you can bed out into the cavity a little to help it sqeeze the HDMI male connector better . Aslo get some DeOxit cleaner form Radio shack and clean the contacts on both ends of the cable and the source component and the AV reciever. it might help.
Some times its not the Machines problem at all but the cable connection or just a crapy cable. they can pick up noise from near by components or power cables and mess up the digital signals on the way to the receiver too. that is why I hate HDMI, there are too many variables that can cause issues.

I've always wondered why fiber optics wasn't considered as a HT video/audio transmission medium. Certainly it has the bandwidth. Or was this the outcome of a copper cable manufacturer conspiracy ?

I dont use HDMI for my audio. I am using an optical audio cable.
oscar_in_fw 03-03-09, 11:00 AM I dont use HDMI for my audio. I am using an optical audio cable.
You are missing out on the lossless/uncompressed audio in that case. But that's only because your optical link probably conforms to the "TOSLINK" standard. I don't know of any technical reason why they couldn't have come up with a high bandwidth fiber optic HT cable connection/protocol which would work in lieu of copper-based HDMI for both high def (maybe even uncompressed?) video and uncompressed multichannel audio. Or can someone straighten me out ?
DVI provides a far superior physical video connection if we have to use copper.
sl@cker 03-03-09, 08:30 PM I've also had another more general issue with my BH100 since I got it. On blu-ray movies, if I leave it paused for a while, then hit play, the audio gets screwed up. To where the dialogue is off with the actual audio. i have to rewind or cycle through the audio options back to the selected audio to fix this. anyone else have this?
Does setting the speaker size to small or large affect anything? I havent noticed a difference between the two.

It happens on mine but its easy to fix so I dont worry about it. Just rewind it a second or two then play, or even...wait for it...pause it again. Happens on my DishDVR also.
I did come across a prob with the Ed Norton Incredible Hulk. I paused it for a bit then when I went to restart the player wouldnt play. All I could do was full stop then restart and skip to the chapter I was on. Only disc I came across this on and it happened twice during the same viewing.
knightl 03-04-09, 06:19 AM i've experienced this issue quite regularly. last week i installed the latest firmware and last weekend, while watching pride and glory, i had to pause the movie for 10 min.
when i came back the audio was fine. it's only one movie with the new firmware, but i happened all the time prior to the upgrade.
have others seen the out of sync audio with the 090121 firmware?

Hi, my unit bought in Poland (guess the same EEPROM and firmware as in the UK) with the newest firmware doesn't play AVCHD. so it's official - no support for avchd :(
as1serge 03-22-09, 05:20 AM 1. Hi
One question for the forum, which firmware supported bd-r and bd-re playback on the Bh100.
I'm also quite interested in the matter, please can somebody confirm (or vice versa) that they have ANY positive experience on ANY firmware with playing video material from BD-R/BD-RE on BH100 (last firmware of 2009 doesn't have this feature)

they really would rather have you call support, it get documented better. I just gave her my e-mail so she could respond to me that way instead of calling( I told her i screen all calls and dont have an answering machine). i then resopnded and she replied, i gave the e-mail to another member but they got no response. so Its best to call. it is what Samsungmaster wants us to do also. the more calls the faster they work i assume.

robert007 03-24-09, 06:41 AM Hallo guys. I just read the comparison of two of the new LG blu rays - BD300 and 370 (on the german web page). And I see the support for AVCHD on DVD+R... well - I usually use -Rs, so I didn't check to burn AVCHD on the +R, if it plays with the newest firmware. Can anyone confirm before I run and buy the +Rs myself?

robert007 03-28-09, 10:05 AM Well nash - it looks as you're right. Included some pics of the rj45 and my setup :). As you can see on the back - region B. And on the screen region A (EEPROM modification).
Hallo everybody. I just bought "sleeping beauty" region B/C for my princes (3,5 years) and - after I did some EEPROM modyfication - it doesn't play ("this disc will not play due to regional settings" message). so I had to change back to my original settings (44 45 00 82 00 05 00 40) for the disc to work. mine is not multi. :(

Maybe you should try to upgrade firmware - at first my device refused to play B region coded Xman-The Last Stand. After last update of 2009 it works fine.

Another Movie with glitchy/poppy dts-ma audio: Bolt.
Yep! After a few minutes, I swapped over to the Panny BD35, and it played flawlessly, with no pops or ticks.
My BH100 is getting closer and closer to be being retired.
JulieWhite 04-04-09, 04:14 PM I recently bought several new titles that will not play in my BH100 after 3 calls to LG I finally received the latest firmware update 2 weeks ago. French Connection 2 still does not work...I just called LG AGAIN and they advised me there is a new firmware update for the BH100 dated Feb 9th 2009 and that I should receive this in 10 days.
I can't dowload the firmware updates from the LG site because they are PC only. (although I have had friends download them and they have never worked) is it too much to ask that LG should just automatically mail us or notify us directly of the new firmware updates???
We've all known that frustration of sitting down to watch a new movie on a friday or saturday night and getting the Homer Simpson 'Doh!!' when the movie won't play.
travt-down 04-05-09, 02:06 AM Would someone post a link to the new firmware? I cant find it since the site change. Thx
as1serge 04-05-09, 08:11 AM Well I've searched LG service site for February's update alas in vain - the latest is disc_update_090121a_kernel_0203a.zip still.
Dear JulieWhite could you please upload the February update you are to receive from LG on some fileshare site like rapidshare.com and post here a link to it?
Thank you very much in advance.
The U.S. site isn't working right now. Don't know why. Maybe it's Conficker!

samihanna 04-19-09, 06:41 PM Hi
I just wonder if anyone has had any success downloading and burning the iso file to update the firmware on the BH100.
I have finally managed to download it after several attempts.
However the iso file will just not burn. I have tried on a mac using the disk utility to burn the iso image to a dvd+r disc but it says the iso is corrupt.I have also tried on windows xp using a free dvd burning software (Free Burner). But that just tells me it is an invalid file.
I have downloaded the file from gb.lgservice.com so its the official site.
For some reason it wouldn't download on several computers i have access to but then i managed to get it to download on a mac and a single xp computer.
Really strange.
Does anyone know were else i can the iso file?
thanks

Does the disc default the player to a multiple of 50hz for the european disc's?
it might be outputting that refresh rate due to the disc. I checked a Euro disc I have but ti doesnt say. Aslo i have only used it on my CRT Front PJ which can scan to any refresh rate .

robert007 04-27-09, 04:35 PM Hey Mel. I have one surprise :(. The EEPROM numbers you gave I've checked on my european model and it work as follows: changed it to multi-region DVD player (checked on many DVDs) and it seemed to be multi-region Bluray player aswell (plays many discs region A coded, many region ABC coded, AND it PLAYED ONE region B coded [into the blue - at least that's what it says on the box]). Today I've received from amazon.uk "jumper blu ray" (FOX, coded B) and it doesn't play. So walking your path I ultimately checked A0, C0, D0, E0 with no success... Below all the settings I checked. And - after all this - just changing the eeprom to 90 didn't help for the player to be multi-region DVD, I had to re-apply Julios-hack... Well - that's life. But I'm still hoping, that one day a nice LG engineer will tell us the code. Or maybe you or some other inventive guy will find out some other way. regards

All the times I've changed the EEPROM I checked the summary table (TVAspect16/9, 1,3,9,7,1,3,9,Enter), it was always saying region A bluray, the only thing changing was DVD region coding (from 0 to 2). Now I'm at 99, I've region A bluray and region 0 DVD on the summary table, it plays both PAL and NTSC DVDs and region A and ABC coded Blurays, still doesn't play Jumper-RegionB, only the CheckSum is changed (from 0x097C at 90 to 0x0985 now). There is about 196 possibilities to set this 4th byte (14x14). Especially I'm not sure at all, it would work, I ain't gonna do it by myself. I give up :(

robert007 04-30-09, 04:23 AM Hey Guys. I just changed the 4th byte to it's origin 82 and the following happened: BD region changed to B, the DVD region is still 0. It plays DVDs region 1 and 2 and BD region B. After I enjoyed the jumper, I changed the eeprom to ... 92. Now The DVD region is still 0 (and plays in fact region 1 and 2 DVDs), and the BD region changed back to A, plays region A BDs and doesn't play the jumper BD. Well - I looked for any multiregion BD players - and - there are some, but you have to change regions manually via remote. This is not that big difference to what we have, and the player is coming in years anyway (doesn't play HDaudio), so I think I'm gonna be happy with that for now, a new player is coming anyway.... :) cheers

Hey Mel, you made it possible, this 90 flick caused the player to play BD region A, ABC and multiregion DVDs. Before that my player was playing only region A BD and region 1 DVD. Now I can use it as DVD player (majority of mine DVDs are region 2 - I live in Poland) and still use it as HD player, since I only have this one real B BD (I checked over the net: into the blue is not region B, although the box says this). So now by changing just one number (from 82 to 92 and back) I have multiregion player, almost as yours. And I'm happy with it. cheers :)
annaepi 05-01-09, 10:15 AM But the problems with reading a few titles in the fox, are attributable to a problem of firmware?
