Don't care if it's a sub-par flic the review sounds great and worthy of a place in the library. And great to have another TrueHD soundtrack.

I was hoping for an explanation on why the extended cut wasn't included. I thought it was announced that way.
This went from a buy to a rent faster than you can say "98 minute cut".

I'll rent it and then maybe if they release the extended edition I'll pick it up. The movie is pretty unspectacular though I wouldn't say it's worth a double dip.

Hmmm.... nice review on the PQ and AQ side of things. I might pick this up if I can find it cheap enough at some point. Would have preferred an extended cut however. In any case, talking about Wolfgang Petersen, Das Boot is an absolute classic. I wonder if that'll be making it's way to HD-DVD? Anyone know who holds the distribution rights?

This was sitting in my gold box on amazon yesterday so I decided to pick it up. Judging from the review of the picture I'm glad I did. Can't wait to see it :)

The movie is fun, with a great picture and awesome sound. the story is significanlty different from the other two poseidon movies that I wasn't sure who was going to die. Who is going to die, when and how, is basically the movie.

Columbia (AKA Sony) owns the rights. So look for a Blue Ray not HD-DVD of Das Boot.

Nice price at Amazon. I'd certainly grab this movie at the current $20 pricing. It wasn't a great movie but it wasn't that bad either. I've seen a lot of people buying Ultra Violet and that was an asstastic movie in almost all respects (my opinion of course)

It seems to have a flawless TrueHD track. But remember, it's probably not as good as PCM. ;)

It would be good to once again see people compare the two types of audio encoding using two different movies. :D

(Note: I was being sarcastic, but it's reflective of the nonsense you see on this forum)

I personally found the extra about rogue waves from the history channel to be fascinating. I fast forwarded through much of the movie just watching parts that looked interesting, but from what I saw it looked great. The rogue wave documentary was SD, but I enjoyed it more than I think I would have enjoyed the movie if I had watched all of that at normal speed.

It's funny how the review mentioned the two specific flaws being softness and noise which is exactly what I said yesterday only I found it to be much more problematic. In fact, some of the darker scenes were so noisy I felt like I was watching dish tv on a stormy night. And I also found the documentary very fascinating.

Well you and Darin just sold this title for me. I LOVE extras that actually inform me. I don't like to see extras in which Actor A lavished Director B with gobs of praise. Blech.

I look forward to watching this piece on Rogue waves.

Read more carefully he said that it was only an issue in a very few scenes. Second the guy gave this a 4.5 and has only given like two other movies a 5. I really don't see where you are coming from.

What do you mean read more carefully?! Did he not say the two problems were softness and noise? Did I also not say that I found it to be much more problematic than the reviewer did? And what do you mean you don't see where I'm coming from?? I just said I found the same flaws only I was more bothered by them. What part of that didn't you understand? Honestly, I really don't see where you're coming from.

Peter Bracke:
'Poseidon' does suffer from a bit of noisiness on very dark shots, and every now and again there is still a bit softness that flattens out depth.

Poseidon
Review: Did Stax flip for this remake?
by Stax
May 11, 2006 - Warner Bros.' high seas disaster pic Poseidon, one of the biggest releases this summer, washes up in theaters this weekend where it will take on the equally mammoth Mission: Impossible III for first place at the box office. This Wolfgang Petersen-directed epic, his third film about tragedy on the ocean after Das Boot and The Perfect Storm, has enough adrenaline, emotion and spectacle to give it a fighting chance at toppling reigning champ M:i:III.

Poseidon, a loose retelling of the 1972 classic The Poseidon Adventure and the Paul Gallico novel of the same name, is a full-throttle survival tale that is far shorter (mercifully) than many other entries in this genre. At roughly 100 minutes, Petersen and company get almost immediately down to business. Although some critics have griped that the film doesn't spend enough time developing characters and exploring relationships before disaster strikes, I was glad that the filmmakers just got on with it.

Every other disaster movie makes you sit through an hour of tedious, hackneyed "doomed love" subplots or other machinations before diving into the real reason why people go to see movies like this: to watch (often rich) people die horrific deaths in the most glamorous settings possible. Cynical but true, I suspect.

We learn just enough about each character, a thumbnail sketch, before their lives are literally turned upside down. Enigmatic loner Dylan (Josh Lucas) is a cardshark who bilks rich drunks at the poker table. Robert Ramsey (Kurt Russell) is a former firefighter and ex-mayor of New York City who is overprotective of his daughter Jennifer (Emmy Rossum). She is hiding a secret from her dad, one which involves her beau Christian (Mike Vogel). Richard Nelson (Richard Dreyfuss) is a gay man contemplating suicide after his partner left him. Maggie James (Jacinda Barrett), single mom of young Conor (Jimmy Bennett), encounters Dylan and is instantly smitten with him. Elena Gonzalez (Mia Maestro) is a stowaway trying to get to New York to see her brother. All of these diverse people are passengers onboard the colossal luxury cruise ship Poseidon (captained by Andre Braugher).

The passengers and crew have just celebrated the start of a New Year when a 100-foot tall "rogue wave" strikes and capsizes the Poseidon. The survivors inside the gala ballroom (where the New Year's party was being held) are advised by the captain to remain calm and to stay in the ballroom, which will be sealed, until help can arrive. Dylan, who knows every inch of the ship in case he ever had to make a getaway after taking some gambler, decides to go it alone. But fate has other plans in store for him.

Dylan finds himself leading a small party of survivors, initially including Ramsey, Nelson, Maggie and Conor, to the bottom of the ship (now the top) where they hope to escape through the propeller duct. The Poseidon is slowly sinking and this band isn't sure that help will arrive in time. Ramsey wants to find his daughter, who was partying in the ship's disco with Christian when the wave struck. (This "find my child" subplot is right out of The Day After Tomorrow, also co-starring Emmy Rossum.)

WB

Click the pic for more images from Poseidon.

What follows is a series of grueling, tense sequences of the characters trying to traverse different parts of the ship, encountering fire, water (obviously) and excruciatingly claustrophobic settings along the way. Characters are injured, some die, but all must face their fears and accept the grim possibility that their quest may be in vain.

That Poseidon is as effective as it is despite its formulaic elements and standard issue disaster movie narrative is thanks in large part to the filmmakers' decision to use more practical special effects than CGI. It helps not only the actors, who must make such life or death plights seem real, but also for the audience's suspension of disbelief. If the sets had been entirely digitally created or if the water work was CGI, we would have been less moved. It makes a difference, no matter how small, that you know the actor (and thus their character) really is struggling to hold their breath underwater or that there really is fire and waves engulfing them.

Although Russell and Dreyfuss may be the biggest names in this cast, Poseidon is Lucas' movie. Dylan is the main character who drives the narrative forward; it really is the story of how this loner finds himself responsible for lives other than his own. Lucas may have finally found his big-budget breakthrough movie after The Hulk and Stealth failed to do that for him. I hope he remains able to balance studio fare with the kinds of indie films he made a name for himself in.

While Poseidon certainly doesn't have the most original or fleshed out set of characters, the actors imbue their roles with enough genuine emotion to make you care whether or not they get off the damn boat. Thanks to its ensemble cast, several carefully crafted suspense scenes and some impressive practical effects, this Poseidon doesn't sink.

That's a bummer then. Not planning to look at purchasing Blu-ray, at least for the forseeable future. Thanks for the reply.

TrueHD + IME + excellent PQ = purchase for me. Plus I enjoy Emmy Rossum, and it's a blind buy, but it's fine, I know that I own worst movies then I expect this to be, by a fairly large margin.

I gotta say with all the horrible reviews I was expecting this movie to suck big time. What a surprise to find a really fun popcorn movie that's TOTALLY mean in the way it dispatches certain characters. I really had a good time with this one. Had it on pre-order with Amazon and cancelled it when it got delayed so I rented in on netflix... Well I placed my order for it again. This one's a keeper. Loads of mindless fun and beautiful PQ. The TrueHD track is awesome too. Finally someone made a huge disaster/action flick without padding the crap out of it just to justify it's budget. Just because a movie's 3 hours long doesn't make it great... Do you hear me King King?

How would people compare this with the original as a movie overall. I have the original on DVD, and though its ok, its not good enough for me to want to see a remake of it, unless the remake is better.

'Poseidon' was much better than I thought it was going to be, especially that Kurt Russell scene (where he gulps the water) felt so realistic! I must have held my breath thoughout the whole film. Great PQ and Sound, well done! :)

Btw, did anyone notice Jacinda Barrett from MTV's Real World London?

Tried searching the forums, but couldn't find this adressed directly.

With the TrueHD track on my XBox360, I heard a rather bad popping/static noise during loud scenes (that some other reports too). When the wave hits, it was very pronounced. Made the wife angry, since she generally likes low sound, and an assault of unpleasant digital popping noises did nothing to further my case.

Others report excellent AQ from Poseidon, so perhaps this is an issue with the XBox 360 only - that the coming patch might fix?
