Technically, yes. Sony and Philips worked on it together. It was never really accepted into the consumer market, so I may just have to add it to my list.

Nobody sane is arguing that. There are no Sony, Disney, Lionsgate, Fox, or MGM titles for HD-DVD. Likewise, there are no Universal or Weinstein titles for Blu-ray.

Picked thisup @ Frys yesterday for 17.99- watched last night-

Overall a very nice transfer- perhaps top 15 to me, and the bigger surprise, it was also a decent film. I completely missed this one when it was in theater but I recommend this film- nice job Weinstein....

So what are the specs on this disk? Does it have TrueHD or anything good like that? Of course I am almost positive it does not have TrueHD since it's the Weinstein Co but then again they did put it on Clerks 2.

My second favorite site left me hanging on this one....

I watched it this week and agree that the pic is quite good. I thought the story was clever but didn't really like how the story was pieced together. I'm gonna watch it again in about a month and see if I like it better. Maybe I will? All the flashbacks got hard to process on the first go.

Well I picked up Pulse and Slevin up today at BB. Guess What?

Slevin won't play. I get the error code. I've tried everything I can think of. I've unplugged, played other HD and SD movies and nothing will get it to play. Sometimes I can get it to at least show "001 001 00:00:00" but it never seems to move off that.

I had some issues with Pulse as well. But seems like when I put a SD movie in first and then put in Pulse, it seems to work fine.

This is pretty pathetic from Weinstein. Guess I'll be driving back to BB and see about getting another copy. I'll probably ask them to try it on their A2 display model to see if it works. I'm pretty pissed off. Weinstein seems to be the only one having this much of a problem.

I just picked this up at Fry's for 17.99. Was looking to pick up Troy for 17.99 too, but they ran out.

Quick question. On the back of the box, it says presented in 16x9, yet it does not fill my whole screen on my TV (1366 x 768) and has black bars on top and bottom that are pretty big, same as those in King Kong, which is 2.40:1. Does that mean even 16x9 movies won't fit the screen? Sorry for my ignorance on the topic. I read on another thread that 16x9 movies should fit a standard LCD HDTV screen. So do any movies fit the whole screen? Great movie by the way.

It is in 2:35 or 2:40 aspect ration which still is 16x9. So unless the movie is in 1:78 aspect ratio, you will always have bars. However I believe Slevin allows for "pan and scan" if I'm not mistaken. When flipping through the menu, I thought I saw that option. However I like the original widescreen better.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the mini-FAQ there. I just wanted to see which movies would fit the whole screen. I know that is looked down upon in this forum, but I want to use all the real estate on my screen if possible. I only have a 32" LCD, so it's not as grand as the 60" TV that will still look good with the black bars. I know this is what the director intends for us to see which is great. The Pan/Scan feature makes the PQ horrible though, so I stayed away from that.

I just ordered World Trade Center from Amazon. that is suppose to be close to 1.85:1, so maybe that will fit more screen. We shall see. Thanks again. Just finished Slevin, awesome movie!

I liked this movie so I picked it up as well. The only problem I had was that I had to crank the volume on my receiver. The soundtrack seemed too quiet. Was fine when I turned it up - didn't have to worry about turning it up and down or anything during the movie at least. (I watched it on my A1)

I watched "Slevin" over the weekend and fully enjoyed it. Excellent picture quality. Morgan Freeman is one of my favorite actors. It was nice to see him in the 'badass' role for a change. This is an excellent addition to my HD DVD library.

This quote was edited for clarificaton....
I have the movie on hd and it won't play.
The player thinks it's a cd.
I bought the HD DVD from best buy. It was shrinked wraped.
I got past the credit one time but now I've tryed 6 times then the player freezes.

I have patients but this is getting crazy. The player freezes frequently when playing cds and won't eject. Now HD movies won't play. Regular movies play fine, no problem.

I had this same problem with casino on hd. It would play the credits and then freeze up. I walked away for 10 mins and came back and still got no response.
Is this normal for the RCA HD DVD player?

I updated the firmware when I purchased it in November of 2006.
In January I bought "Casino" and it played fine. The player indicated I have the updated firmware.

I'm not buying any more movies on hd till i can find out more about this issue with the rca player.

If someone can help me on this let me know

Joe;

The Toshiba HD-A1 player will freeze up on a CD if you hit the eject button while the CD is playing.

You must hit the stop button two times to fully stop a CD in this player. If you hit the stop button only once and then press the eject button, it will freeze up.

You should not need to unplug the unit in order to shut it down. Simply hold down the power button for about ten seconds and it will turn off.

If you update the firmware on line make sure there is no disc in the player. Leaving a disc in the player while updating the firmware via the Internet is bad!
This usually renders the unit unable to recognize HD DVD discs.

I'm pretty interested in buying (been in buying sabbatical after going nuts with my initial player/display purchase - I'm very happy btw) but I have tax in Washington - I know Amazon has the best service and I often buy for them despite the sales tax but is there another close second for price/service where I wouldn't have tax? Then I could just go there without always having to check prices for ages to save $2. Thanks guys :)

Oh! Newegg has it for under $21 free shipping, that'll work for me :)

Good movie, the set up took a little long to develop but not too bad.
Great PQ and AQ, I was able to run at reference level with no problem.

Boondock Saints
Suicide Kings
The Way of the Gun (maybe?)

I liked Running Scared as well. It was an import from Germany though...

Hope you don't mind that many people are skipping past your posts. If you can't be bothered to type something that's readable, then many of us can't be bothered to try to interpret it.

Did they forget to teach you sentence structure and punctuation in grade school?

Bought Slevin, decent movie, a little slow and odd at first, thought this might be something of a turd in a punchbowl, but it does pick up, and though some of it is predictable, it pulls it off well enough to make the experience overall a pretty good one. Wife enjoyed it, she was about to bail on it but she stuck it out, enjoyed it overall...

Looks and sounds nice as well...

The PQ was nice but at the end of the movie, I had no desire to see it again. Very nasty.

I liked this movie so I picked it up as well. The only problem I had was that I had to crank the volume on my receiver. The soundtrack seemed too quiet. Was fine when I turned it up - didn't have to worry about turning it up and down or anything during the movie at least. (I watched it on my A1)

I had the same findings as well. Almost felt like one of the early 3 WB titles.

As far as value and overall quality, I'd say Slevin is among the top 5 HD DVD's ever.

To go into detail would require massive spoilers.

Excellent film, and the quality was pretty good as well. I normally dont like Lucy Liu, but she was pretty good in this one.

It is in 2:35 or 2:40 aspect ration which still is 16x9.
I hate to correct a post from two months ago, but my OCD refuses to let this go. Of course 2.35:1 is not 16x9, it's 2.35:1! 16x9 is 1.77:1. How is that anywhere NEAR 2.35:1??? If an HD-DVD says enhanced for 16x9, it means that it doesn't have the EXTRA black bars that would fill out a 4:3 television. This term is an archaic carry-over from SD-DVDs and doesn't really apply anymore (unless I'm mistaken and there are 4:3 HD-DVDs.)
Some people would be better of using sign language than trying to write.
The irony in this post was delicious.

Lucky # Slevin was my wifes second favorite HD DVD- next only to Seabiscuit. I thought the plot was awesome as well.

I actually liked Running Scared even better. But Slevin was one of my top movies as well. I love movies like Slevin and Running Scared :)

Oh yeah, and I really enjoyed the movie, despite the fact that I had guessed the "twist" almost right away. Despite knowing something the movie was obviously trying to hide, I still very much enjoyed watched it all unfold, kind of like the Prestige.

Well I traded my 1st copy of Slevin, and unfortunately, the 2nd copy also freezes my HD-DVD addon while trying to watch the deleted scenes.

Anyone else have this problem??

I’m having a problem similar to this. The movie plays fine, but after any deleted scene plays the screen goes black. My 360 add-on does not totally lock up because I can still hear the audio from the DVD Menu as well as the sound effects when I try to arrow around on the menus. I’ll probably write MS or Weinstein or both about this.

This was a blind buy, as I'm a big Bruce Willis fan, but I enjoyed this immensely. Wholeheartedly recommended. Definitely has a Pulp Fiction/Jackie Brown kinda vibe to it, but also has a lot in common with The Usual Suspects (one of my alltime faves).

I just watched Slevin last night, and I give it a thumbs up.

Very nasty to me is just that there is 2 sex scenes in the movie, where a guy is screwing a girl both times, but don't worry, it's pretty fast and not necessary to make the film still good in my opinion.

WOW! I finally got around to watching this movie today, and was totally blown away. I had heard good things about it, but was thoroughly impressed. Outstanding PQ too. Just a all around great movie and great disk. It made The Departed look like warmed over left overs (literally! Infernal Affairs anyone?).

The PQ was certainly immensely better than The Departed.

I think I bought this movie in release week, through Amazon or some online retailer. I haven't watched yet, but it's my to-do list.

Watched it this week.

Really great movie, amazing PQ, and it was shot in my hometown (Montreal) :D

I only saw one person mention it in this thread, but I found the English 5.1 DD+ track to be extremely low, especially comparing to the French and the commentary soundtracks.

Any reason to this?

Otherwise, an awesome HD DVD showcase.

Nope the audio was perfect for me. A very good track, if somewhat out shined by the great PQ.

I neglected to mention one of my favorite features in this HD DVD; the colors and textures. The blue seats at the station in the opening sequence really pop and the wallpaper seems to have real depth to it. Those were the first two differences I noted between this version and the SD version.

I love this film and watch it about once a month. Every performer seemed perfect for their role. Bruce the soft-spoken killer, Josh the smart ass and Lucy the high-strung. Ben was great and Morgan slipped easily into the “I’m the wisest dude in the room” role that he has performed so well in the past. I might view this movie as simply a hybrid of Pulp Fiction and The Usual Suspects except for the way each role seems perfectly tailored for the actor that fills it.

This film should be viewed by anyone that doesn’t have issues with violence or brief sexual content. It’s a top 5 HD DVD for me.
