i have pioneer elite 74txvi av receiver. what is the difference between av receiver and processor. want to buy a used krell processor. is it better than receiver. thanks

the bitterness of poor quality lingers long after a cheap price is forgotten.

processors dont have any onboard amplification. you will need stand-alone power amps with your processor.

Don't some preamps also lack a tuner, or are those called controllers?

With a preamp, the power supply is not sharing with the amp (and tuner) stage. Probably less heat. Simpler wiring architecture maybe? Less EMI? Just guessing here.

I've never seen a receiver with XLR outputs, so if your amplifier takes balanced inputs as well as unbalanced (RCA), and if you prefer that, then you would need the preamp.

I always assume that the preamp stage is inferior in a receiver because they are so mass market, where you can't even get a preamp in the box mover stores. But that may only be my perception about the quality.

That is not correct many avrs surpass the sound quality of many pre/pros , and that's why many members here use their avrs as processors since they have more features than preamps and many times they even have better sound than the preamps costing 3 times as much.
