Using the Tivo Premiere. Anyone having problem with audio on CSN "Daily News Live". I have been experiencing scratchy audio. I'm using digital audio output. This is two days in a row.

I honestly cannot understand under what conditions Verizon chose to include them, other than to boost their "# of HD channels" count. They are a major waste of QAM bandwidth and cannot possibly be contributing any serious revenue.

Perhaps someone has pictures of someone doing something with sheep and blackmailed said someone into including them. That makes more sense than anything else I could dream up :)

I'd rather see the "Ball of String HD" or "Yule Log HD" channels.

Hey! I get it! Sheep! pets.tv!

Over the last couple days, I've been experiencing audio dropouts for all stations. They last for a minute or two, and then the sound comes back. Channeling up or down doesn't restore the audio. Anyone else come upon this problem? It occurred again this morning while watching MSNBC.

stevec325
04-23-10, 01:05 PM
The only audio dropouts that I get (all new since latest IMG) are when there is an HDMI handshake burp, which seems to happen, on average, once every night. It's about 50-50 when this happens that I will completely lose all audio. Changing the channel always restores it. And, as you say - the problem happens across all channels.

Jim Hef
04-23-10, 01:32 PM
Same thing this morning, but they reported back that the problem was in the remote feed from Washington, and not the broadcast. Didn't see anything show up last night, but I watch being aware that a problem may exist, and that's taking away some enjoyment!

I usually forget about it... then something important gets said and... of course... that's when I get the frigging dropuout :(

I'm sure this is a fairly biased thread to post in :) but do you recommend FiOS in the Philly suburb area? We just bought a house in Huntingdon Valley (19006), and need something. Honestly, internet is most important, but having good HD channels will be nice. We'll probably add a home phone since the package deals always include it. Thanks!

Jim Hef

Just on MSNBC?
Unfortunately, no. It was the usual scrolling through channels via the up button, and all channels were without sound. It seems to come and go over the last week or so, and I'm trying to figure out if it's my service line, or system wide.

Jim Hef

...We just bought a house in Huntingdon Valley (19006), and need something....
You'd be very happy with the internet speed and the high def channels. Yes, biased, but in the best way...beats the hell out of any other choice you may have. Know ahead of time that the quoted pricing is without any set top boxes, and they are rented individually, paying for every set that you have connected. There's no free lunch since every set needs at least a $4 box. Make sure they let you know the full pricing you will have so that you can make the decision. Not sure if the Comcast alternative needs a box now or if a SD TV can pick up the standard channels without, cabling straight from the wall.

What he said. I switched to FIOS from Comcast as soon as it was available in my neighborhood in Malvern and haven't regretted it once. Better picture quality, more HD channels, faster internet and much better customer service, IME.

saldog78
04-27-10, 12:57 PM
Thanks for the info and opinions. We almost bought a house in Yardley, but were worried about flooding issues...

GeekGirl
04-27-10, 06:16 PM
If you were looking at one of the properties down near the river, it was a good choice.

Former ComCast XSomething customer, haven't looked back since. BTW, you can have the ONT (the big white box) installed in your garage or basement. Just be sure there's an AC outlet nearby. All servicing is done remotely. No need for Verizon to show up unless it actually breaks.

stevec325
04-27-10, 09:30 PM
I'll jump on the bandwagon, too.

We dumped Comcrap as soon as FIOS became available in our neighborhood. FIOS' HD PQ is better, the channel lineup is more extensive and the internet is faster and more reliable. Overall, the primary reason I switched was for HD picture quality. There is a big difference, with FIOS being MUCH better.

FIOS is not without its quirks, however. The guide is quite poor, there have been some bugs with their software releases (IMG) and there is less VOD content.

I consider those downsides trivial, though.

If you have the opportunity to get FIOS - you really should subscribe.

saldog78
04-28-10, 08:59 AM
Good to know FiOS is a good option. My only option for internet the last place i lived was Comcast. That's nice they can put the ONT inside the house. Right next to the elec panel in the basement should be ideal.

Yeah, the house in Yardley was on Black Rock rd, right on the canal. I saw it sold recently... i hope the new owners get good flood insurance. Our new house doesn't even have a sump pump. Big difference!

Jim Hef
04-28-10, 09:37 AM
If you were between the river and the canal, then yes, that house may need a V8 powered sump pump! ;) Most of us in the Yardley area are quite safe from flooding. It's the folks near the river that have been devastated often within the last few years.

stevec325

Yea, Jim - if your house were to flood, we'd be under water here in Newtown :)

In a direct slap in the face of Philly fans...surprisingly, SportsNet NY was added today to our lineups on Channel 96. This will be SD only - and will follow the same rules as YES.

Meaning, any live games, replays, etc...will essentially be "blacked out". Apparently this was a contractual deal to show the channel nationally.

Also, 2 new international pay channels were added - SBS and TvBe. I believe one is Korean...not sure of the other.

jeepmatt
05-07-10, 08:41 AM
For all you Spanish speaking folks - or lovers of watching Spanish television, Univision HD is live on Channel 514.

I believe this takes care of all of the local "must-carry" HD requirements.

Jim Hef
05-07-10, 10:12 AM
And who says they aren't supplying new HD channels???

jeepmatt
05-08-10, 06:10 AM
Jim-
The last remaining QAMs that are left they are using for just this - must carry locals.

Game2 HD will be added on 5/24 - it's a 2nd HD channel for the Extra Innings package - but that is fit into the same QAM slot. No addt'l bandwidth is necessary.

Jim Hef
05-09-10, 02:00 PM
So, we are now maxed out of bandwidth, and shouldn't expect too many additional HD channels? How will this be rectified to provide the few that people are actually requesting?

stevec325
05-09-10, 08:37 PM
Perhaps, they can combine some of the crap-SD channels and free up QAMs.

Nah... that would make too much sense!

stevec325

You gotta use my philosophy on these things....

The MLB season is 162 games long.... it's really "who cares" until September.
The NHL season is 82 games long and every team except the few bottom dwellers makes the playoffs... it's really "who cares" until the semi-finals.

I also apply this to the NBA, except I take that even further. The game does not really begin until there are only 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

So, I watched my 2nd game of the Flyers season tonight :)

I will be taking my grandson to CBP when the Dodgers come to town (August). I really only enjoy non-playoff baseball in person. That may be the first game I watch this season.

Jim Hef
05-17-10, 09:37 AM
Well, with that philosophy, you'll be enjoying a few more Flyers' games this year! Last night was surprisingly good.

Yea <sigh>... we lived in LA for about 11 years and my girls have very fond memories of going to see them play. We were there when Kirk hit the "miracle" home run :)

But, I'm booing Manny every time he comes to the plate, just like any good Phillies fan would do :D

GeekGirl
05-17-10, 07:37 PM
OK, I'll cut you some slack on the Dodgers. Some, not much. :p You saw the Kirk home run? Wow. I watched it on TV live.

Unless the Sixers are in the NBA finals, I might turn on the last 2 minutes. Well, actually not.

Anyone notice a lot of data drops and macro blocking on CSN-SD (76)? It's been a very constant annoyance over the last few weeks. I use the composite output of my DCT-700 as a picture-in-picture on my PC monitor so I can surf while watching the Phils. With a small insert size on the display, it's not bad. Audio to my A/V stereo.

I was at the Flyers game 4 (vs. Bruins). Watched from one of the mezzanine suites, which have wall-mount LCDs. They always leave the remote. :) Channel 200 (Comcast HD) looks fine in 720p. I watched the Phillies during the period breaks.

Jim Hef
05-23-10, 10:35 AM
Since they own the arena, I would imagine that the Comcast feed is pretty good in the suites! Couldn't comment on the CSN SD...never venture there, but the game yesterday afternoon looked awfully good from many standpoints!

With Doug Collins coming back, I may actually watch a few games next year!

stevec325
05-23-10, 07:07 PM
I got a last minute invite to go see the BoSOX/Phils game last night.

Now, I'm a die-hard Phillies fan, but.... that said, I think I was the only one in the building rooting for Dice-K to get the no hitter :) I mean at some point, the game is lost and it would have been nice to see some history live. I left after the blooper that spoiled it :(

05-24-10, 08:44 AM
Steve, I can see your point but I'm glad he didn't get it against us. Could you gauge how the rest of the stadium felt?

The periodic audio and video drop-outs on VS.-SD are also annoying and have been going on for weeks. It's turned into a running joke at my house.

stevec325
05-24-10, 11:23 AM
VS has been pretty bad - to the point where I don't watch it much.

I'd say the vast majority of the folks at the game were happy when the base hit came. Interestingly enough though, there were a lot of people heading to the exits afterwards. My take on that is that they left, once the no-hitter was no longer possible.

It's a love/hate thing. No one wants to be on the wrong end of one of those. But, seeing one live would be cool. I think many fans had that same feeling.

ccotenj
05-24-10, 12:10 PM
^^^

i think it boils down to:

are they "phillies" fans, or are they "baseball" fans too...

if anyone is a "baseball" fan, i can't fathom rooting against someone throwing a no-hitter once it got that deep in the game, especially in a may regular season game... it's not like no-hitters happen every day... i could easily live with "my" team being on the losing end of a no-hitter if i was sitting in the stands watching it... :)

playoffs would be a different story... :p

disclaimer: born and bred bosox fan here... :D

stevec325
05-25-10, 01:00 PM
The only team I would root against getting a no-hitter would be the Yankees.

Q: Steve, who is your favorite team, in all of baseball?
A: Whoever is playing the Yankees that day.

Jim Hef
05-25-10, 01:07 PM
I think that sentiment is a nationwide thing! You love to hate the team that just wants to buy all the talent, and then smile a lot when they still aren't the best!

The Versus coverage last night for the Flyers' game looked very good, and the quality of that game was excellent also!

Game2 HD should appear on 1473 tomorrow in our VHO.

Need some help with unencrypted QAM available on FIOS in Bucks County just outside Philadelphia.

I am at my Mom's house and installing a Slingbox Pro HD on a little used set. I have the cable in working and it scans and finds the majority of unencrypted QAM channels I would expect: 3.1 is KYW, 10.1 is WCAU but not seeing 6.1 for ABC or 29.1 for FOX. The long channel list has a lot of channels with 4 digital sub-channels, but the majority are black, and I assume encrypted.

Can someone help me find Fox and ABC? I'm really only in need of the four major networks here.

UPDATE: This was apparently a guide data/channel list issue in the Slingbox setup process. I selected an alternate provider and setup completed accurately. Had to manually edit channels in the guide, but that was a decent work-around as I was getting pretty frustrated with this issue.

Anyone watching the movie tier late last night? On many of the channels from about 915 up, the picture was totally pixelated, and without audio for a long period of time, such that I couldn't continue the movie I was watching, Torn Curtain. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on switching from Comcast to Verizon for everything. The bill drops from $209 (After taxes with comcast) to $175 (before taxes). So, add taxes in and it's still probably a $20/mo savings for the tier 3 triple play, 1 HD box, 1 SD box, 4 digital adapters.

My biggest concern is that I was told by someone with verizion that the guide is absolutely horrible. He claims that it's incredibly laggy and sluggish. How bad is this really? Or is he overstating things?

Also, I have a Tivo HD in one of the rooms, what is the monthly fee on a CableCard?

Lastly, how long does it take to get an install date, and can you choose the install date? I'd ideally like to do it in the first week of August, just as the Comcast contract runs out.

Jim Hef
07-12-10, 10:31 AM
Picture quality greatly outweighs the lesser Guide and On Demand vs. what Comcast offers. The Guide continues to get better, and it certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker. At first you would find it lacking, but it's there, so get used to it. Yes, you could probably schedule a convenient installation, but until you call for your area, you won't know if they can comply with a two week warning. I believe the cable card is the same as a digital adapter fee.

Red Zone HD was "re-launched" today on 835.

IF you remember, it was taken down during the olympics and MSNBC-HD took it's QAM space.

It is included for all Ultimate HD customers, and ala carte for anyone else.

That should be it as far as new adds for quite a while, unfortunately. Maybe 1 more.

We have to turn our TV up to RIDICULOUS levels to get any sort of volume with FIOS.

I used to be able to go into the DYNAMIC RANGE section of setup and turn it off and then back on and that fixed it, but that no longer works. Been like this for months. And now other people at my work are having the same issue, so I was wondering if anyone else has it.

I have an answer to the audio delay with Verizon. However, you do need to have a DVR built into your settop box.
Set up your DVR to record the game. When the game starts, fast-forward until you are watching in real time. Then, "Pause/Play" quickly until the picture and the sound are aligned.

GeekGirl

Good idea, I forgot about it.

If the audio is behind the video, you can hit "Pause" in real-time. If it's the other way around, you only need to record enough to get the alignment right.

Yes Geek Girl, they really are that bright. Much brighter and even lighter in shade than the unis from the 70's.

How can someone complain to Comcast that this insanely stupid advertising on the glass behind the goalies is totally ruining my enjoyment of the game?

It was somewhat annoying when they dropped the background color on the McDonald's logos. Even less so when they made the Verizon logos nearly transparent (I would expect that, considering this is their arch nemesis).

But when they fired up that Comcast ad with the blue background it totally distracted my eyes from the game. It's even more apparent in SD.

I posted the following in the QP6412 master thread, but that thread doesn't seem to see much action, and since I'm in the philly area...
Recently, it seems my receiver (Denon AVR-3801) no longer goes into Dolby Digital with my Fios QP6416-2.

I think I have all the settings correct, and the receiver still goes into 5.1 with the other sources I have going into the receivers other digital audio inputs.

I think this has happened fairly recently, as it worked for the past few years.

Anyone else having an issue? Any thing I should try?

Yes, I did, was a setting on the receiver. I love the way it sounds, but user friendly it isn't. When you have small children and baby sitters, they seem to change settings I can't even find...

Now if I could only solve the HDMI hand shake issue between the verizon box and my Olevia 537B12, I'd be happy.

Take that as a hint- password protect your STB against unauthorized charges. Not for the baby sitter, but for the little kids who will order whatever the man on TV says to...

The sound was in DD surround on the NFL network. So either PHL-17 is taking the surround sound and retransmitting it in 2 channel (or oven mono?) or the NFL network is sending it to PHL-17 in that format (which I doubt).

The same thing happened for the Redskins-Eagles Monday night game - ESPN had surround sound but PHL-17 had something worse.

I think the lights on my Denon receiver were lit up as 5.1 incoming and 5.1 outgoing but I guess it wasn't. I'll have to check channel 17 another time to see if it always works that way or if it was just the game. At least it's good to know it probably wasn't my receiver.

I'm becoming increasingly aggravated that I can't block channels that I don't want or subscribe to from my guide. You used to be able to selectively hide channels, but no more; now VZ wants you to go through the process of setting up "favorites" which is a completely non-user friendly/non-intuitive mess.

Why can't I just turn off all the crap I have no interest in instead of being forced to scroll through all the foolishness?

jeepmatt

Use Favorites. No mater how painful the initial set up may be (and it really is NOT that difficult), once you do that you are good to go.

Ok I signed up for fios and having it installed in 10 day.

What should I expect?
I see mentions of "ONT" what is that?

Also I'm getting the whole house dvr, but I think I need a dvr in two rooms.
Should I bother with whole house or just get separate dvr's in 2 rooms?
Cost of dvr's after the free 3 months.
Does the whole house dvr have 2 tuners, I will need to record at least 2 shows at once
and probably 3 at times so that's why i'll need an extra dvr in the bedroom.

What channels does fios have that are not on comcast and what will
I miss from comcast?

What is the size of the hd on the dvr?
She told me that we would get a $200 visa card and that

There is a $100 visa card OR 3 months dvr for free

I also asked her of the size for the hdd in the dvr, she called her boss and he said it was the 5oogb drive.
NOPE, it will e the standard size probably 160gb, but after install I can call and order
the 500 for a one time fee of $40 to replace a current dvr.

If you want to compare further, Veizon's billing will make Comcast look like a J.D. Powers award winner.

It's a door-to-door rep? Sounds like a sales pitch. I'd dump that and call Verizon direct. Or, go online and see what you can price out yourself.

ONT = Optical Network Terminal. It converts the fiber to RF coax, ethernet, and phone. Fiber has tons of bandwidth, not like RF.

I came over to FiOS because the local ComCast overloaded the system and PQ was crap (pixelation). The deal maker was getting Comcast Sportsnet. I thought Comcast was more expensive than Verizon; my Verizon contract is up in May.

If the pixelation has been fixed, I may consider looking at Comcast. Maybe.

The PQ on the EPl games is great on FSC HD. The reason the games look so bad is that the SD channel is nothing more than a center cut of the HD feed. I don't believe that FSC offers a dedicated SD channel anymore and the provider, such as Fios, must do the center cut and SD conversion themselves. 631, HD Theater, has been terrible, but I've also experienced the problem with an On Demand movie that I purchased. The pixelation shows as a streaking line across the image that varies in height and in placement on the screen.

stevec325
04-19-11, 01:38 PM
Jim,

I have had the pixelation problem with 2 VOD movies that we rented. It's pretty terrible, at least the last one.

Matt says that when this happens to him, he stops the VOD, reboots the STB and restarts the movie. That fixes the problem.

I think that is an agreeable workaround, however, they really need to solve the underlying problem. It's totally not acceptable for this to happen - ever!

I'm very frustrated with the quality of my service lately and I just opened a ticket to request a tech to come out and fix the damn problem!!!!!!!!!!!

We'll see what happens.

Jim Hef
04-19-11, 02:55 PM
...We'll see what happens.
Keep us informed, because I'm also frustrated by this, but not to the extent that I no longer think that FiOS is the best of the cable providers. With you getting the same problem, it rules out the local distribution boxes for the various neighborhoods. The workaround that you mentioned seems to be a drastic disruption to the movie, but if it works, sure beats the constant interruptions to the audio and video.

stevec325
04-19-11, 06:53 PM
I'm less pissed off about the VOD (probably because I don't watch that much VOD) than I am about the annoying blips that seem to happen all evening long on the channels. Now, I find myself looking for them, which really distracts me from enjoying the content.

If it was happening since day-1, I'd be sensitized to it. But, I could probably count on one hand, the number of pixelations, drops, burps, etc. that happened over the last 2 years. Over the last few weeks, however, I'd need a calculator to add them all up.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that we should return to the days of an artifact free picture :)

Jim Hef
04-20-11, 09:50 AM
Mine are mainly audio dropouts on the majority of channels, with the HD Theater being the exception and very distracting. Agreed, if the service wasn't always so pristine over the last few years, we'd think this was just like Comcast!!!

stevec325
04-20-11, 09:57 AM
Jim - that's a problem here, too.

If you look really close, when you get an audio burp, you'll see that some pixelation is often times accompanying it. It ranges from very minor (small area) to major (entire image). Usually, it is very minor or less. But, it is almost always there.

See what I mean about not enjoying the content and looking for stuff? :)

Also check out the input indicators on your Denon. You'll see them blink, too.

HD Theater, 631, was unwatchable early in the afternoon, with loads of pixelation and audio noise. They must have been working on it, because late afternoon, all the problems were gone. Clear and crisp now.

I did get an email from them, acknowledging the escalation ticket and that they will be working to isolate the problem. The Direct Forum over at DSL Reports is a great thing. Kim responded right away and get me logged into the system.

[from my posting over at DSL Reports Forum]

The tech arrived at 12:30 and was not aware that I had had several discussions with both the Direct Forum folks and the phone support folks. He was given a ticket to look for a problem at my house. Obviously, there is no hand-off between any of the support groups. Lovely!

So, we checked every outlet, every box and the connection at/from the ONT. Surprise - everything is well within spec. He offered to replace the ONT, since I had an older flavor. I accepted and he did that and we rechecked everything again... still perfect!

I brought him up to speed about other people in my neighborhood and VHO reporting similar problems. I gave him the link to this thread and the name of the Direct Forum rep who was helping me there.

He said that he would go back and start checking things, from my house back to the VHO.

Nice guy. Very willing to help solve the problem. However, I am realistically expecting to see the problem again & again.

Jim Hef
04-25-11, 02:40 PM
So at this point the problem is non-existant, or just less often??? Over the weekend, I had some flashes of a black screen during the Flyers telecast, but I always assume those are transmission problems from the source rather than cable provider glitches.

stevec325
04-25-11, 03:54 PM
You tell me. I didn't watch any TV this weekend. I will tonight, though :) I hope that they are gone, but I got a bad feeling.

Those blackouts are transmission glitches at the source or upload/download to the satellite.

Jim Hef
05-05-11, 03:52 PM
Steve, what was the resolution of your problem? Did they get rid of the drop-outs and pixelation? I'm not getting any of these lately.

stevec325
05-05-11, 08:25 PM
Your guess is as good as mine, Jim :)

The tech came out, replaced the ONT (it was a down-rev unit, so he gave me the latest & greatest) and switched out a splitter. The new ONT appears physically identical to the old one and the old splitter was the correct rated & type. So... who knows?

I still saw some problems afterwards and for a couple days following that. Then, we were watching one evening and noticed that there were no problems... It has been virtually pristine, on all channels, since then - about 5 days in a row.

Fingers crossed that is that!

Jim Hef

Also, is there a way to have the video output stay at 1080i? It always goes back to 720p when I turn my tv on which is a 720p set.

Wow! -- I'm having the exact same problems! I've re-booted the unit but it continues...

My DVR continually defaults to 480P output - but I have it plugged into a Yamaha receiver via HDMI then to the TV. The receiver passes the HDMI signal thru when not on - but for some reason the DVR drops the resolution. I can reset it to 1080i manually, but that is getting old. I guarantee that Verizon's only recommendation will be to remove the receiver from the video chain

So I had to call Verizon tonight to reboot my DVR since is was frozen giving me audio but the video was stuck. Could not rewind, fast forward, change channel or anything. I reset the box and then it worked but I spoke to a technician after that to report it and they reset the box again because the rewind and skip forward and back wasn't working right. She reset it and it was ok after that. I told her that if it happens again I want a new DVR.

Where'd everyone go?

Last week I noticed my 500g dvr was unusually full even with only about 20 hrs of recorded programming, about 90%.
So I reset the dvr using the help menu restoring it back to normal.

Also what is the buzzer beater channel? There's never any programming.

I had a verizon issue for which I called tech support, back on July 17th. I got a guy on the phone from Buffalo who seemed real knowledgable.

Long story short, not sure if he was really in the know, but he said VHO 7 would get the update around July 23rd. I still don't have it, but I don't know what that means for the schedule.

When the installer came out to the house to fix my problem (cut fiber on the pole), he said you can get 1.9 right now, if you can get switched to Cisco boxes. The cisco boxes require a different router, and all but the little adapter boxes need to be changed to Cisco boxes as well. No mixing of cisco and Motorola in the same house.

I didn't want to switch as I have a lot of stored stuff on my Motorola boxes. He seemed to think the Cisco was the way to go, and they are all already 1.9.

FYI - I've been running on a generator since 3 AM Sunday morning. No problem with FiOS whatsoever. I've got my STB hooked up to a 22" LCD monitor via component cables (why not?).

The generator's RPM changes with the appliance loading. That's way too little regulation for my 63" Sammy plasma, which seems to reset itself before the UPS can catch it. We're expecting power back by 6 PM tonight.

The generator RPM fluctuations (with load) are too much for me to feel comfortable connecting my 63" Sammy plasma. It reboots from power line glitches before the UPS can catch it.

I'm expecting power to be restored today, based on PECO estimate and that I saw the work crew show up.

The new channel guide is awful on my DVR. Especially the info that pops up when I change channels or I press play after fast forwarding on the DVR. It takes up an obnoxious amount of real estate on the screen and stays up for way too long. It's also in 4:3 ratio instead of full widescreen. That's the TV I usually use so I didn't even realize there was a difference between the way it looks on my other TV. The old version had a setting that let me specify how long it should be displayed - this one doesn't. (I really have not forgotten which show I was watching while I skipped through commercials) Here are a couple of shots of my 2 TV's with the annoying program info...

What STB DVR do you have? I've been informed that the 64XX series won't give the full screen guide, and that you need to request a 72XX series DVR to see the changes. jeepmatt

BCarlsen-
Jim Hef is correct. If you only have a 6xxx series DVR, it will seem laggy and the guide will not be full screen. You need either a 7216 (silver), 7232 (black) DVR, or the new Cisco boxes (which only go to new customers) to enjoy the full compliments of 1.9

This is all part of VZ's plan to phase out the 6xxx series boxes, as they also are not capable of decrypting channels sent in MPEG-4.

I got my new 7216 and everything's much better. Widescreen guide and much more responsive. The tech support agent was very nice but he didn't seem to think there was any difference between the 6xxx DVRs and the 7216. He offerred to upgrade me to some other DVR that had a 320 GB harddrive and would allow me to add an eSATA drive on my own. That DVR requires a one time $40 fee. He didn't push it and I didn't really want to pay anything extra, so he sent out the 7216 thinking there was something wrong with my box. Now that I have the 7216 it looks like you can add an eSATA drive to it as well.

jeepmatt

Yep - either the 7216 or the 7232 will allow eSata drives. Glad you are enjoying the "full" guide! Actually - that "other" DVR, the 7232, has a 500GB drive, not 320. So looks like 2 strikes on the agent ! LOL.

Schlitzie-
Yes - the Cisco boxes are being deployed in VHO8. I'm not aware of anything "amazing" above what the Moto boxes can do - other than VZ got a better deal on them.

I just upgraded my old HD boxes to the 7100 series and I was surprised that there was no front display. The agent mentioned there was no clock, but I thought the channel display would remain. Oddly, the DVR box has both time and channel displays. A little excess cost-cutting, I think.

You can put a splitter in. It will reduce to signal level to attached devices. If the signal is strong enough the reduced level will still be adequate. Do a quick test before going through the trouble of a line installation.

I live in an apartment building in Center City that currently has FiOS internet available but not TV. I got a letter in the mail about a month ago saying it was "coming soon" and to call to get on the priority installation list. When I call they say they don't know when the TV will be available so they can't schedule me.

I'd really love to switch over to FiOS, but it doesn't make sense financially until I can move everything over and get a bundle package. Is there a way to find out when TV will become available? Does Verizon need to do additional work in the building before they can offer TV?

The city already has a franchise agreement with Verizon...they've been deploying TV to certain neighborhoods for a while. There are several apartment buildings in center city that have FiOS internet but not TV. I'm guessing they need to install more equipment. I just got excited when I got the letter, but it's been over a month and they still have no idea when they'll be able to actually set an install date.

I've finally decided that my procrastination is costing me too much money. I'm going to jump to FiOS. The latest triple-play offer seems too good to pass up.

Prime HD/25Mbps/Phone for $85 plus free Multi-DVR for life. After going through the website, it looks like I'll be paying $100 plus tax for 2 years. This includes one digital adapter and one HD STB in addition to the Multi-DVR. I've also included the $3.50 option for an unlisted phone.

OK, so here are the questions that I have.

How would I set up my home network? I currently have Comcast and I run coax to the modem. The modem connects to my Airport Extreme router and all of my computers and internet devices connect are connected to it.

I understand that with FiOS, they give you a wireless router that is connected to the ONT (???). I don't want to use their wireless router for the home network. Can I use their router like a cable modem? If so, does that prevent the cable boxes from getting certain features?

Second question - With the Multi-room DVR, I'd like to have as much HDD space as possible. Do the Cisco boxes have more HDD space than the Moto ones? Also, would a Moto STB work with a Cisco DVR? I ask because the Moto boxes aren't as deep as the Cisco ones and for the STB, that could be an issue due to where my TV is. Will they accept a request for certain boxes when I order?

Thanks.

Frank

How would I set up my home network?

Do the Cisco boxes have more HDD space than the Moto ones?

Our Comcast cable entered in the basement, connected to a cable modem and then to a router that fed the house. The FiOS that replaced it has fiber into the same place in the basement to their "box." The box feeds analog telephone to the telephone switch and coax to the FiOS router. I turned WiFi off on the FiOS router and just connected it's Ethernet cable to the home system, same from the as the Comcast cable modem. In effect the FiOS modem replaced the Comcast modem but there is another, bigger box on the wall that converts from fiber to coax and phone twisted pairs.

I got the larger Moto DVR and added 1T of storage over eSATA. Just bought the eSATA box (one that Verizon said on their website would work) and plugged it in once I got the current DVR firmware (a couple of months ago). I cannot answer your other questions.

Frank -

Moto vs. Cisco - the newest Moto (7232 - black) and Cisco's are both 500GB. Now that we have IMG 1.9 - you can tack on up to a 2TB Esata drive. The DVR records to the External drive first - then to the actual DVR once that gets filled up.

Moto's will not co-exist with Ciscos. You either have 1 or the other in your home.

At the time of your install, i'd ask your tech if he has any Cisco boxes. I know they are using them for new installs only at this point.

When I signed up for FiOS in 2008 I had a much better deal than Comcast was offering. Especially with the free DVR for 6 months. 3 years later and it seems like Verizon is no longer interested in competing with Comcast on price. Verizon has removed channels from my package while keeping the price the same, apparently in an attempt to lure me to a different plan. I like my basic channels (locals + Comcast SportsNet, ESPN, CNN, Discovery, etc) and I want them in HD. I called Verizon to see if I could downgrade from the Extreme HD package I was on and they told me that the current programming packages are all more expensive than I was already paying.

My FiOS plan was 20/5 internet, Extreme HD programming, 1 HD DVR, 1 HD STB, 3 digital adapters and I was paying $121/month.

So I checked Comcast's web site and it looked like I could downgrade a couple of features and save about $20/month. Before signing up I was in a Best Buy and a guy with an Xfinity shirt was at a desk near the TVs and wanted me to switch. I listened to his pitch and it turns out I'm going to be paying almost half of what Verizon was charging.

My new Comcast package is 12 Mbps internet, Digital Starter programming package, 1 Free HD DVR, 1 HD STB, 2 digital adapters for $65/month. And that price is guaranteed for a year with no contract.

I have been very happy with the Verizon FiOS product - great picture quality, never had any internet outages. Maybe I should thank them for making Comcast realize they needed to compete on price. But it's not $50/month better than Comcast.

Since the PQ is no longer as good as it was when I switched from Comcrap, I am wondering if I should now dump Fios... if I could get $50+/month back in my pocket, I think I would do it.

Maybe, it's time.

I had been having problems with my DVR for a long time and finally called Verizon. In the past I've called and they reset it and it seemed to help for a while. Now I called again and no reset would help. When I tried to watch a recorded show the DVR wouldn't respond to the remote but the buttons on the front worked fine. I tried 3 diff remotes and all the same result. Tried diff things over the phone with a tech that didn't work so they sent a new DVR. I got the new DVR and I'm having the same issue, works ok for everything except when I stop watching a recorded program the DVR won't respond to the remote when the menu comes up. I hooked the old DVR up to another tv out of curiosity and now it works fine.

I originally had a dvd recorder in the mix and a splitter but I eliminated them, going directly into the box, and I'm still having the same problem. Anybody had a similar issue. I really don't want to have to stay home from work for a tech to come out but it looks like that may be my only option.

Disney Jr SD was added on Channel 260 and Smithsonian SD on 134 today in VHO8 and VHO7. Smithsonian HD also moved from 625 to 634.

Also, as some other areas also noticed, the MLB Extra Innings / NHL Center Ice HD channels have moved to 1470/1471.

This is to make room for the launch of 3 additional HD channels (Channels 3-5) on 1472, 1473, and 1474.

I am calling this out as these will be the first pure MPEG-4 HD channels on FIOS. Only Motorola 7xxx STB's and Cisco's will be able to view these channels.

This is only the beginning. Some additional channels have already been identified that will convert also to MPEG-4 in order to create more capacity.

not likely unless indemand provides a feed that is bad as these channels are sent out Native MPEG4 HD off of the satellite. Any cable provider is having to convert the MPEG4 feed to MPEG2 or only allow MPEG4 devices to receive GAME1 HD and GAME2 HD and TEAM1 HD. Any thing other than those GAME3-9 HD and TEAM2-9 HD are as far as I know are being sent out by providers in an MPEG4 only format format I know Time Warner Cable and Bright House are doing this with the channels being MPEG4 SDV.

Verizon should be passing on the 8Mbits per second MPEG4 feed directly or recoding it to be 12Mbits per second per channel since they will be on a single QAM with 3 channels. 8Mbits MPEG4 is roughly equivalent to 16Mbits MPEG2.

Will the new channels be lesser quality than conventional HD channels?

No. Feedback so far is that quality is better.

Will CableCARD tuners work with the MPEG-4 channels?

Yes. But the device you use to watch the channels may not be compatible. Check the stats for your device to see if it is MPEG4 capable, and even that is not a guarantee. I *think* Tivo Series 4 devices work, but I'm not sure.

Those three MLB channels don't work on mine. I guess I have an older 500g device.
