View Full Version : Yes - Fragile DVD-A OR Dire Straits - BIA SACD?? Xenos 01-23-07, 06:48 AM Last disc I can fit in this order... what should it be?!!! :D privit1 01-23-07, 07:06 AM BIA Dual disc ? the best sounding BIA disc by far. MickB 01-23-07, 08:32 AM BIA is fantastic. PaulT_BC 01-23-07, 08:34 AM Screw Dual Discs - you can get the SACD in Canada - BIA hands down! Get the Stereo release of Fragile Ultradisc Gold CD by Mobile Fidelity (just out). Not surround but supposedly very very good mix. http://www.audaud.com/article.php?ArticleID=2096 I have the DVDA - OK surround mix but very harsh high end. Probably OOP soon so if you want the surround version, pick it up anyways. Like Paperboy2003 below, I have both and would get BIA. Paperboy2003 01-23-07, 10:10 AM I have both...go with BIA oztech 01-23-07, 12:03 PM bia is my best sounding sacd so far. David Scott 01-23-07, 01:11 PM I have both and both sound good. BIA just sounds better, much better. William 01-23-07, 01:42 PM It is hard to believe that BIA's is an early 48/16 original master recording. PaulT_BC 01-23-07, 02:05 PM I believe it was originally recorded in 1985 as 44.1/16 PCM. http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/hirez/messages/205802.html There has been arguments up and down on all the boards since pre-release whether or not an SACD version from original 44.1/16 could improve it. Regardless of whether it is officially hi-res or not, the surround mix is fantastic and IMHO one of the best ones out there. http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=51310 http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/1/138565.html Xenos 01-24-07, 01:41 AM Screw Dual Discs - you can get the SACD in Canada - BIA hands down! I just got an e-mail saying they no longer have it. :( So... now the choice changes :) Porcupine Tree - Deadwing DVD-A or Dire Straits - BIA SACD Or maybe Foreigner - 4? PaulT_BC 01-24-07, 05:21 AM So... now the choice changes :) Porcupine Tree - Deadwing DVD-A or Dire Straits - BIA SACD Or maybe Foreigner - 4? Still BIA :) Deadwing is very good (personally I like In Absentia better). Don't have 4 but was never a really big Foreigner fan. You will find that more and more DVDA are going OOP so if you 'think' you might like one you see and it is available - buy it. PaulT_BC 01-24-07, 06:42 PM To be honest I almost never listen to the stereo tracks on MC discs, so cannot comment on the stereo section. Have to assume the same EQ though. I'm away from home right now or I'd pop it in the player. I'll probably pick up the MoFi Gold CD reissue for the stereo version. Flexx 03-07-07, 08:38 AM Heads up...Fragile is back in stock at CDUniverse (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=5077425&style=music&cart=321618643&BAB=E&frm=lk_allspin). Spencer1812 03-07-07, 11:04 AM Thanks Flexx, I just ordered it. They accepted the order, I have been looking for this for 4 months. stormchaser 03-07-07, 01:05 PM Where the hell did CD Universe find those? Fragile is really, really, hard to find. As to the OP, pick up the Foreigner as it is really rare now. the BIA will be around for awhile. filper 03-07-07, 02:40 PM I found a copy of BIA SACD at my local Best Buy last Saturday... it was never there before. $22. Excellent surround mix. Spencer1813 03-07-07, 09:04 PM Check it out stormchaser, Flexx was right. I just got home. and I got order confirmation, and my order shipped today. Could it be that WEA is re-pressing? stormchaser 03-07-07, 10:10 PM Check it out stormchaser, Flexx was right. I just got home. and I got order confirmation, and my order shipped today. Could it be that WEA is re-pressing? That'll be the day. I'd love to be wrong though.... The Rang 03-07-07, 11:17 PM Where the hell did CD Universe find those? O course, Warners DVD-A's are expensive up here in Canada. Fragile is actually one of the cheaper ones at $25.99. Same store has The Nightfly and both Foreigners. Maybe I should just hold my breath and pay.... privit1 03-08-07, 07:06 AM Where the hell did CD Universe find those? Fragile is really, really, hard to find. I like what i have heard so far. keeping on thread just i would reccommend the Dual Disc version of BIA over the SACD. deeppurpleman 03-08-07, 09:28 AM Get the MFSL CD of Fragile. Better than either of the above choices. Flexx 03-08-07, 09:53 AM If anyone still wants the BIA SACD (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6875057&style=music&cart=321618643&BAB=M&frm=lk_allspin)... Milt99 03-08-07, 07:52 PM Get the MFSL CD of FragileAh but it's not multi-channel. CD Universe says backordered but available in 3-10 days or something similiar. I ended up ordering it from Germany via Amazonuk. tom_c 03-08-07, 10:48 PM I haven't heard BIA on SACD, it'll be my next purchase. Yes Fragile however, blows me away when my system is working perfectly. It's usually my reference disk when I'm trying something new in my system. I'm waiting for Cowboy Junkies Whites Off Earth Now, to come out on SACD, that's my reference CD for 2 channel mode. Are you refering to the DVD-A or Gold disc Fragile? Gov 03-09-07, 03:50 PM A HUGE thumbs up for BIA!!!!! This SACD is incredible!! Just got it today and I had it so loud, my ears are ringing like I just saw them in concert. This is a seriously good sounding SACD!! The Rang 03-09-07, 09:42 PM A HUGE thumbs up for BIA!!!!! This SACD is incredible!! Just got it today and I had it so loud, my ears are ringing like I just saw them in concert. This is a seriously good sounding SACD!! OK....time to add this one to the list. This is getting expensive. Most of the titles on my "want" list are OOP so I have to buy 'em when I see 'em. You never know if it's your last chance. tom_c 03-10-07, 09:40 AM Are you refering to the DVD-A or Gold disc Fragile? DVD-A, where do I get the gold disk? Is it better? Thanks, Tom Sam S 03-10-07, 11:37 PM I feel really bad for those here that feel that BIA is their best sounding SACD. This is truely the most compressed, maximized hi-rez disc I have ever purchased. Loud, hard, and terribly fatiguing at anything about the absolute lowest volume, this is a mastering disaster. If you have any other version of this recording, do this simple test. Put on track #3 "Walk Of Life". Listen for about 1:00 minute, until the drums and vocals start really coming in. Now, crank up your volume as loud as comfortable. Leave volume there, take out CD and put in SACD. Play the same track and wait unit you get to that same point. LOUD! This means that during the mastering stage, the dynamics were compressed, clipped and distorted. In effect, the music has been permanently altered, and ruined. Is the DVD-A any better? Sam S 03-11-07, 12:25 AM Is the DVD-A any better? I heard the dualdisc/DVD-A version at a friend's house, and it sounded the same to me. I would not expect any mastering differences between the two formats. The mix on this release is nice and enjoyable. It's just too bad it's ruined with one of the worst, most compressed mastering jobs on a rock reissue title. |
