that article says that the update is for japan only, no word for american release.

QJ.net suggests more PS2/PS1 backwards compatibility is included.

Couple of other rumours floating around:
a new audio option will enable the volume of user interface sounds to be changed
you'll be able to use your own photo as your system user icon

ummmm.......uhhhhh....1080i looks better on my 768p Sony GW3 RPLCD, so screw 720p.
