I got two 16 gauge wires that seperately aren't long enough for my right rear speakers but combind they would be. Can I twist the ends together to make 1 long one or is that a bad idea?

You should be ok but do something other than just twisting them together. You can solder the joints together and then put heat shrink over the joints.

if you don't have an iron, crimp butt splice connectors or wire nut style connectors will work. Make sure that the copper ends are bright before crimping or twisting.

Put some chewing gum.j/k

or even electrical tape will be fine.

used some electrical tape after twisting them. Will prob. order some new speaker wire soon, but I didn't want to have 1 rear speaker using 1 type of wire and the 4 others using a different.
