You guys know about rackmounts? Do you know of any racks I could get? I need a rack that is in the 30" deep range as the 42" deep rackmounts are too deep for my needs. IIRC rackmounts are standard equipment and work with audio/video component switches, 1U computer enclosures, network switches, toaster ovens (j/k), etc... right? Any particular ones I could get? I don't want to spend very much money on this but it does need to look nice.

Do they have ones that are like charcoal silver coated, something that doesn't look beige?

My Middle Atlantic rack was just delivered yesterday. 19" standard rack 71" tall, 26" deep and 22" wide. I'll be framing a place for it this weekend. There are a TON of 19" accessories including media shelves and equipment shelves available for it.

Model: MRK-3726

Was just looking at this website today. They look very cool, I think I may have to pick one of these up for myself

How are the prices? Do they do business in the lower 48?

Check out RSEM (http://www.rsem.com) for rack stuff. Also the great big auction site has plenty of stuff too. Cheapest shelves I could find were there.

How necessary is it to have a 42" deep rackmount? How deep are blade servers typically? Are there any 1U unit devices that are actually 40" deep?

Personally, I think 42 inches is way overkill. I can't think of anything that even goes to 30. I had a 1U computer a ways back and it was 25" or 26" deep. I think most AV gear doesn't go much past 18" deep. Heck, I've got a Sony BetaSP deck at work and it's only 18" deep. :D

you might also want to look at Raxxess (http://www.raxxess.com) . I got their 35U KAR audio rack with the front doors. The build quality is excellent and its quite a bit cheaper than MA.

I'm not aware of any devices that run that deep. That's 3.5 feet. Even blade servers aren't running that deep.

Just to be clear a blade server and a typical 1U server are two different things. A blade server is a small server that plugs into a larger chassis. This larger chassis provides power and other connections for the individual blade server. And example would be IBM's BladeCenter (http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/bladecenter/chassis/index.html). It is 7U tall and less than 30" deep. It can hold 14 blade servers.

That being said, a typical 1U server is also less than 30" deep. A good source for 1U server chassis is YMIUSA (http://www.rackmountpro.com/index.php), if you're interested.

So the reason for having a deep enclosure is for cooling purposes? What specifically would require 10-15 or even 20 inches deep of cooling? How does that work? Anywhere where I can get more information on this?

I have a 42" rackmount by APC from the mid 90s and the problem with it are its feet, they stick out far too much and I don't know if this is a typical thing or not. So I was curious as to whether or not it would be standard practice to replace the feet with something that doesn't stick out like these do.

http://www.pcguide.com/ref/power/ext/ups/z_apc_smtrmfam.jpg is an example of what I'm talking about, except on my rack they stick out much further and are much more annoying.

I have a 25" deep unit and the only thing that is deeper is the keyboard and LCD drawer, which looks like it was made for a 30" unit. anyone have an idea if you can retrofit?

Also consider buying a used server rack out of the paper or craigslist. There are several between 2-250 in my area (Atlanta), which includes shelving and fans (not sure how loud the fans are). You can get relay racks even cheaper.
