I had a texture applied to my drywall with joint compound and I was wondering how long I should let it dry before painting. It is in a heated basement and there is no moisture. The drywall guys said prime in two days, but the paint shop told me to let the mud cure for 1 week. I was hoping to prime this weekend. How soon have you guys primed the joint compound. They finished Tuesday afternoon.
Thanks

I think it would depend on the type of texture you had applied. I did just an "orange peel" in the lobby. I let it dry about 24 hours and then primmed it. It was completely dry. Now in the theater we are going to do thicker rough trowel. That may take awhile longer, but I don't think much more then a day or two. I would think a week is way over kill, and I wouldn't want that painter working at my house. If you did it tuesday, I would say you are good to go. Prime away :)
My 2 cents ;)

Are you using a water-based primer? If so, you can do it soon after the texture has set up. If you use a oil-based primer, you'd be trapping moisture under the film and would be doing a no-no! Just don't drag the roller around excessively and ruin your texture!
I've textured many times using medium knockdown and primered just as soon as the textured dried out white (sometimes before) and never had any issues.

Thanks guys! Now I definitely have a project for this weekend. 1800 sq. feet of primer and paint. I can hardly wait.
Thanks again

Get alot of primer if you coated the whole walls with compound. It sucks it up like a sponge :D
