I'm finishing up my home theater and need a good paint color for the wall behind the plasma and the theater seats. I have dark cherry wood floors. Any tips would be great.

I'd say mallard green, but since you have red seating, dark dark dark red!

Jimmy ! Jimmy ! Call in someone who KNOWS colors. If you are gonna go with red seating, you want colrs to go with that. Find an interior decorator. I suggest dark gray w/ that red. Don't go with red walls unless you want it to look like a strip bar or something.

Yeah, I was a painting contractor in CA for 10 years. I have no clue

What's wrong with a strip bar? :p

I just painted my home theater room. Walls are Sangria (2006-20 Benjamin Moore) and Ceiling is "Dragons Breath" (1547 - Benjamin Moore). I couldn't be happier with the colors. BTW - I have a front projector and the dark colors make a HUGE difference in image contrast and black levels (my walls were previously cream; ceiling white). On a subjective level, the room just feels a lot more like a theater.

I attached a photo of the room with a red leather diner chair...the flash from the camera makes the Sangria appear a bit brighter and more red....but you get the idea.

The Sangria is a burgundy, but not too red - its more muted. The Dragon's breath is a nice dark gray without any color tint. The two go great together and my wife (who was VERY skeptical - especially with a paint color named "dragon's breath") really liked the finished product.

Good luck!

w/ cherry floors, and depending on how dark of a red the chairs are, I'd go w/ a gold....at least thats what I just went with for my theater..good luck

Well... so now I know what you really thought of my theater when you came to visit...

Steve - your just missing a pole on that stage :-D Give me a shout if you start hosting some gentlemens nights :-)

Seriously, I think adding Reds, Blacks and Golds looks great - but I would say that :D

Knowing HOW to paint does not make you an interior designer.

Feeble minds think alike!

Looking really good Mark. Your bar in the other thread is looking great as well.

We had ~45 people in the house for the superbowl and it was a blast... everybody loved the color scheme.

(oh, and the pole goes in the dance studio... ;) )

Hahaha ok. You mean if I had a piece of paper from some community college you'd trust that over my experience and color-consultant abilities?

Hahahahahah OK. Remember, I'm the one who said to go with red.

Oh and at what point did I disagree with Red as the color.

James,

I also have red leather cinema seating and am probably going to go with a dark gray for the walls and black for the projector screen wall. Got another question for you though. How did you construct the media cabinet/shelves??

Cheers,
Tony

I might as well continue this thread....

I'm in the final (hopefully) stages of planning a dedicated HT in an existing basement room. The 12'x14' room already exists, and my goal is to convert it to a HT. The below-grade room is totally light controlled. I do not plan to make framing modifications to the room. I plan a 120" diagonal 16:9 AT screen with LCR speaker behind it on one of the 12' walls. I plan to have ONE row of seating at about a 10-'11' viewing distance. Anyway, this isn't why I'm in this thread....

One of my first effort is painting... currently the room is white walls/ceiling and a light brown carpeting. Perhaps my biggest challenge is convincing my my wife that darker paint is REQUIRED!! I'd prefer a black screenwall, and fairly dark ceiling and side walls..... My wife asks if we can leave it white....

Does anyone have GOOD, OBJECTIVE evidence supporting darker walls/ceiling?

My wife thinks that darker walls/ceiling would only help if the room had windows....

I'd like to get started with equipment procurement and installation, but if I need to leave the walls white, then I'm not sure it's worth the effort and dollars to use quality equipment.

fwiw, my current design employs a Mits HC6000 projector, an AT screen (SMX or other), OnkyoPro PR-SC885P pre/pro, Emotive AMPs, and (most likely) Polk LC265i L/R, LCi-C center, and FXi-A6 surrounds and rear-surrounds.

Any suggestions? Any good links for me to send to my wife? She's worried that the darks walls/ceiling will be impossible to change later and that it would hurt the resale value.... I don't think she believes me when I say "it needs to be dark"....

Thanks.
